The major cold shock protein of E. coli, which comprises a nucleotide sequence encoding cs7.4 with functional equivalents thereof, along with a nucleic acid molecule having a promoter sequence which is capable of demonstrating transcription of a gene at a temperature below normal growth temperature of E. coli.
