Abstract

The invention concerns a procedure for the bleaching of pulp using oxygen as an oxidating bleaching chemical. The essential features of the invention are that oxygen is used in the first oxidation stage of the bleaching process, that the pulp is subjected to enzyme treatment, and that after oxygen bleaching and enzyme treatment, the pulp is washed.
According to the invention, the subsequent oxidation stages can be implemented using bleaching chemicals containing chlorine, e.g. chlorine gas and/or chlorine dioxide. The use of enzymes allows partial burning of the washings and enables the amounts of toxic compounds in the bleaching effluent to be reduced, simultaneously lowering its chemical oxygen demand.

Claims (15)

1. A process for bleaching pulp, comprising using oxygen as the bleaching chemical in a first oxidation stage of the process, treating the pulp with an enzyme, and after the oxygen bleaching and enzyme treatment washing the pulp, wherein the content of organic compounds in the resultant bleaching effluent is reduced by more than 70%.
2. The process of claim 1, wherein the enzyme treatment is effected before the first oxidation stage.
3. The process of claim 1, wherein the enzyme treatment is effected after the first oxidation stage.
4. The process of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein subsequent oxidation stages of the process are effected using a bleaching chemical containing chlorine.
5. The process of claim 4, wherein the bleaching chemical is chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide or a mixture thereof.
6. The process of claim 4, wherein between each subsequent oxidation stage the pulp is treated with an alkali.
7. The process of claim 6, wherein the alkali is sodium hydroxide.
8. The process of claim 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 or 7, wherein the enzyme is selected from the group consisting of hemicellulase, cellulase, pectinase, esterase and a mixture thereof.
9. The process of claim 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 or 7, wherein the enzyme treatment is at a temperature of 10 to 90°C and a pH
of 3.0 to 10Ø
10. The process of claim 9, wherein the temperature is 40 to 80°C and the pH is 4.0 to 8Ø
11. The process of claim 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 or 10, applied to a softwood pulp.
12. Use of an enzyme in the bleaching of pulp, wherein oxygen is used as the bleaching chemical in a first oxidation stage, wherein the content of organic compounds in the resultant bleaching effluent is reduced by more than 70%.
13. The use of claim 12, wherein subsequent oxidation stages a bleaching agent containing chlorine is used.
14. The use of claim 13, wherein the chlorine containing chemical is chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide or a mixture thereof.
15. The use of claim 12, 13 or 14, wherein the enzyme is selected from the group consisting of hemicellulase, cellulase, pectinase, esterase and a mixture thereof.
