Abstract

ABSTRACT

A stopping device, such as a cable and chain stopper on a vessel or the like, fitted with a fork-shaped stopping member having a lead portion, and which is connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above and lowering the same to below a specific level, in the present case a deck.
The fork-shaped member is provided with a movable slotted rotary disc adapted to be locked in a plurality of positions, and which is arranged in a cavity of the stopping member, downwardly of the lead portion.

Description

12~3~ 1~

This invention relates to a stopping device, such as a cable and chain stopper on a vessel or the like, fitted with a fork-shaped stoppiny member having a lead portion and which is connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above and lowering the same to below a specific level, in the present case a deck.
Such a stopping device is known from Dutch patent application 81,05697, laid open to public inspection, which is based on Norwegian priority application 80,3852 of December 18, 1980. Such stopping devices are mainly used on vessels, drilling ~; platforms, in ports and the like.
similar but not movable stopping device is disclosed in U.S. patent 3,507,243.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a stopping device for a cable or chain for use on a vessel or the like, comprising a fork-shaped stbpping membe~r having a lead portion, said stopping member being connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above and lowering the same to below a speclfic~ level, wherein the fork-shaped stopping member is fitted with a movable ~ slotted member.
; 25 According to another aspect of the invention, ::
~ there is provided a stopper for a cable or ~ n~

- 2 ~ 3~7 chain comprising a fork--shaped stopping mernber with a downwardly narrowing lead portion passing into a cable guide slot, said stopping member being connected to means for lifting the stopping member to above or lowering the same to below a specific level, there being provided a locking member extending, in its locking position, over the guide slot, and wherein below the lead portion the stopping member is provided with a rotary disc mounted transverse to the cable guide slot, said disc having slots of different widths, said disc extendir.g substantially within a cavity within the stopping member, said slots in the disc being able to be brought in a position overlapping with the cable guide slot for adjustment to different cable diameters or chain sizes. ~s a result, the use of loose inserts known in practice can be dispensed with.
The above slotted member may comprise a rotary disc adapted to be locked ina plurality of positions.
The disc can be arranged in a well of the stopping member, downwardly of the~lead portion.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, there may be provided means for locking the disc, consisting of wells made in the disc and corresponding with the diffe~rent locking positions, ~ the wells being engageable with a spring~actuated :'.

ball, catch or the like arranged at least partly in said well.
The stopping device according to the invention may be fitted with a movable plate-like catch disposed in the cavity, which extends normally in the attachment path of the cable or chain.
The catch plate may be designed in such a way ; that the portion forming the catch proper comprises an offset portion attached to the catch plate, said portion extending in the locking position over the leading disc slot.
The catch plate can be urged into the above normal position by means of a counterweight and/or a spring supported in the well.
One embodiment of the stopping device according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, - in which:
Fig. l is a dlagrammatic cross-section of a cable and chain stopper arranged on a vessel;
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged detail of the device shown in Fig. 1 and on~the line II-II of Fig. 4;
Fig~ 3 is a view on the line III-III of Fig.
2; and, Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2.

According to the drawings, a cable and chain stopper ;s fitted with an outer pipe 2 installed in the deck 1 of a ship, wherein an inner pipe 3 is adapted for up and down movement. The inner pipe 3 is fitted at its top with a head 4.
The inner pipe 3 accomodates a cross rod 5 engaged by a piston rod 6 of a piston-and-cylinder assembly 7, of which Fig. 1 only shows the lower part. The lower end of the piston-and-cylinder assembly operative by means, not shown, is connected through a fork construction to a bottom plate 9.
The latter in turn is fixedly connected to the lower end of a lower portion 10 of smaller wall thickness of the outer plpe 2. For the purpose of proper guidance, the inner pipe 3 is fitted with a pin 31 extending into a slot 32 provided in the outer pipe 2 and the lower portion 10 thereof.
As shown in Fig. 1, the portion of head 4 connected to the inner pipe 3 is fitted exteriorly with a seal 13 and a dirt scraper 12.
The head 4 is fi-tted with an upper lead portion 14 with a slot 28 linking up therewith, as well as a central well 15 accomodating side by side a disc 17 containing slots l6 and a catch plate 18.

The disc 17 comprises a square passage for receiving a pin 19 having a correspondlng square 19' and two cylindrical portions 19" and 19" linking up therewith. As shown in Fig. 4, the pin 19 is confined at the one end with a circlip 20, while the ot'ner end is fitted with a square 21 engageable with a wrench/ not shown.
The catch plate 18 is hook shaped, while the ; portion 22 forming the catch portion proper is offset and attached in such manner to the other portion of the catch plate tht this portion 22 extends, in operation, over the then leading slot 6 of the disc 17 by which the slot is substantially shut off.
As shown in Fig. 2, the catch plate 18 is hook-shaped and rotably mounted by means of a non-continuous shaft 23. Against the bottom of the catch plate there lles a leaf spring, not shown, supported in the central well or cavity 15, said spring ensuring a repeated return of t~e catch plate in the locking position.
- The locking of the slotted disc 17 takes place by means of a ball 24, which is maintained through a spring 25 in abutment with one of the wells 26, each corresponding with a slot 16. The spring 25 is adjustable by means of a set screw 27.

~:33 7~i 7 Naturally, all kinds of other means are also possible for retaining the slotted disc 17 and the catch plate 18 in the desired position.
For the sake of completion, it is mentioned S that the lead portion 14 adjacent the connection to the slot 28, is fitted with an offset portion 29 adapted to receive the socke-t of a cable, not shown.
The top end of the head 4 is furthermore provided with an opening 30 for receiving a locking pin, not shown.
It is finally observed that many modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.
