Abstract
Abstract of the Disclosure A pneumatic tyre for heavy loads comprises an air-tight inner panel, a carcass, a belt, a tread, side walls and a tyre base. The carcass is arranged in the line of action of one of the forces present in the event of loading amounting to between 30 and 50% of the load rating. For a projecting length of between 5 and 20% of the tread width, the belt ends in a region of from 5 to 20% of the tread width that tapers on both sides of the tread width.
Description
~L8~
This invention relates to a pneumatic tyre for heavy loads consisting of an air-tight inner panel, a carcass, a belt, a tread, side walls and a tyre base.
It has been found that radial lorry tyres of S conventional construction are not suitable for heavy-duty operation under harsh conditions such as can occur for example in the event of excessive overloading (up to 200%) or inadequate air pressure. Ihis is because radial tyres of conventional construction are primarily designed for relatively high speeds and long motorway runs. Under harsh condit ons J tyres of this type fail after only a few thousand ~ilometres.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pneumatic tyre for heavy loads which, even in the event of adverse stressing by road surfaces, overloading ~nd poor maintenance (air pressure), still has an ade-quate service life.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the carcass is arranged in the line of action of one of the forces present in the event of loadinq amounting between 30 and 50~ of the load rating and in that, for a proj`ecting leng-th of 5 to 20% of the tread width, the belt ends in a region -tapering on both sides of the tread width - of from 5 to 20% of the tread width.
Through the deviation of the carcass line from the ideal line as encountered in unloaded pneumatic tyres, the stress maxim1lm is dissipated so that overloading no longer has such a damaging effect, resulting in a long service life. At the same time, the new tyre shape provides for favourable tapering at the transition from the tread to the side wall, thereby reducing the danger of heat build-up and improving the flow of forces.
In addition, the transfer OL forces Erom the belt is promoted by the lateral extension of the belt inserts on Le A 21 163 ~3~3~
both sides o~ the tread.
In one particular embodiment, the tapering region is defined by concave arcs having radii of from l0 to 25~ of the tread width.
This special arcuate rounding is easy to produce from the point of view of moulding and has proved to be favourable in the event of deformation.
One example of an embodiment of the invention is described in detail in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings~ wherein:
Figure l is a section thrQush a tyre.
Figure 2 shows layers of the carcass.
In Figure l, the tyre consists o a steel cord carcass l, a highly elastic rubber mixture 2, a side wall 3, a lower steel belt 4, an upper steel belt 5 and a tread 6 which at its edge gradually merges with the side wall 3 through two concave grooves 7 having the radius R~ To emphasize the trend of the carcass line, the drawing also shows the usual carcass line of unloaded tyres of equal height which, in this case, is offset by the distance = l0 to 25 mm in the vicinity of the grooving of the carcass.
Figure 2 shows in section the lines of action of the forces applied in the event of loading amounting to 25 0, 30, 40 and 50~ of the permitted load. The desired carcass line is required in particular to follow an action phase, but should at least lie in the shaded area.
