Description
~ ~'7~ 3 The present invention relates to a waterproof watch case and more particularly to such a case including a sealing gasket mounted between the back cover and the casing of a watch of the extra-flat type, that is having a thickness not exceeding 4 mm.
More specifically, the invention as broadly claimed herein is an extra-thin waterproof watch case, comprising a casing having a thickness substantially equal to that of the case, a back cover, a casing ring disposed wi~hin the casing and above the back cover for supporting a watch movement, the casing having a lower shoulder within which said back cover is received, and an annular sealing gasket of T-shaped cross section having three wings, a first said wing being compressed between the back cover and the casing ring, a second said wing being compressed between the back cover and the casing, and a third said wing being compressed between the casing ring and the casing.
A description now follows of preferred embodiments of the invention having reference to the appended drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a partial radial cross-section through the axis of the winding stem, in a first embodiment of the invention, and Figure 2 is a radial partial cross-section similar to that of E'igure 1 but of a second embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1, the watch case has a back cover 1 mounted in a casing 2 which may be circular or otherwise shaped. The cover is mounted in a cover rabbet formed in the back face of the casing 2, more specifically resting in a shoulder 3 of the rabbet.
In use, this back cover is fixed by means of screws (not shown) threaded in suitable tappings provided in the . ~" ~ . ..
L ~ 7 3 casing 2 perpendicularly to the shoulder 3. The case 2 has a thickness which is essentially equal to the total thickness of the watch, that is less than 4 mm., and comprises an upper rabbet defining a shoulder 5 intended to receive a mirror 6.
The outer faces of the back cover 1 and the mirror 6 are essentially flush, as shown, with the adjacent faces of the casing 2.
Sealing between the mirror 6 and the casing 2 can be obtained in any known manner, paxticularly by gluing.
The casing 2 has an inner face defining a rabbet with a second shoulder 7, this inner rabbet is of smaller dimensions than the cover rabbet receiving the back cover 1.
A ring 8 is provided in the casing 2 for supporting the watch movement. This ring is housed as well as the dial 9, in a rabbet of the casing 2 having still a smaller dimension than the shoulder 7.
The casing ring 8 comprises a peripheral lower rabbet.
A T-shaped sealing gasket made of resilient material has an annular shape, circular or polygonal dep~nding on the watch shape. It comprises as shown in transverse cross-section, three wings 10, 11, 12. The first wing 10 is pressed between the back cover 1 and the support ring 8 which bears, through the intermediary of the dial 9 against a shoulder 13 of the casing 2, the back cover 1 being held in position by means of the said not illustrated screws.
The third wing 11 of the resilient gasket is pressed, in the peripheral rabbet, between the ring 8 and the casing Z whereas the second ring 12 of the gasket is pressed, in the inner rabbet, between the back cover 1 and the casing 2.
The main advantage of such a gasket is that it ensures a tight seal simultaneously between the back cover 1, the casing
- 2 -7~73 2 and the support ring B and above all, it is completely located in rabbets of the casing 2 and of the support ring 8 so that it does in no way increase the thickness of the case and is neither accessible nor visible from outside the case.
The dimensions of the gasket wings 10, 11, 12 are such that in use, as shown, it is compressed in its totality between the back cover 1 on the one hand and the ring 8 and the casing 2 on the other hand. Furthermore this gasket is also pressed along a direction extending radially with respect to the case, in its portion 11, located between the ring 8 and ~he casing 2.
One obtains thus a perfect sealing thightness up to several atmospheres, for example 3 to 4 atmospheres, with only one gasket the manufacture of which and the setting in place of which is very easy and above all causing no increase in the thickness of the extra flat case.
This construction is very easy to manufacture since the machining is simple and assembly straight forward so that the casing quality can b~ easily guaranteed.
In a second embodiment, shown in Figure 2, the gasket has only two wings 10, 11 and thus has, in cross-section, the general shape of an L.
Here the support ring 8 has, in transverse cross-section, the shape of a Z. The gasket wings 10, 11 are in usel axially pressed in their totality between the back cover 1 and the ring 8 and radially between the ring 8 and the casing 2.
Here again the same advantages are found as in the first embodiment above described.
It is evident that the described sealing system can be used indifferently with a circular case or with a differently shaped case and this is still a further advantage.
