Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A window guard device includes a pair of telescopically inter-connected frame members for defining a fence across a window opening.
Each frame member is defined by a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars, which are interconnected at their ends by end plates; the end plates at one end of each frame including holes for slid-ably receiving the bars of the other frame, so that the length of the guard device can be adapted to the side of the window opening. The outer end of each frame is connected to the side of the window frame.
A window guard device includes a pair of telescopically inter-connected frame members for defining a fence across a window opening.
Each frame member is defined by a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars, which are interconnected at their ends by end plates; the end plates at one end of each frame including holes for slid-ably receiving the bars of the other frame, so that the length of the guard device can be adapted to the side of the window opening. The outer end of each frame is connected to the side of the window frame.
Description
This invention relates to a window guard device, and in par-ticular to a device for preventing unauthorized access to a window.
Te'lescopic window guard devices are not new. Examples o-f such devices are found in Canadian Patent Nos. 287,463, issued to Q. M.
Rexinger on February 26, 1929; 471,2~8, issued to F. L. Hawkins et al on February 6, 1951, and 575,959, issued to J. A. Quinn on May 19, 1959; and U.S. Patent No. 3,738,062, issued to H. S. Ughi on June 12, 1973. Fach of the devices disclosed by these patents inc'ludes some form of telescopic bars or frames, so that the device can be adjusted to fit a variety of window sizes. The patent of most interest to the present inventor is the F. L. Hawkins et al, Canadian Patent No. 471,248, because this patent dis-closes a device bearing the greatest similarity to the device of the present invention. However, there are distinct disadvantages to the Hawkins et al invention. For example, the Hawkins et a'l bar assembly is secured in position by set screws between the ends of the assembly. By using a suitable tool, it would be a simple matter to loosen the set screws so that the assembly could be removed from a window opening. In other words, the Hawkins et al burglar bar assembly is not particularly burglar-proof. Moreover, the Hawkins et al assembly is unnecessari'ly bulky, op-posing bars of the assembly being disposed in separate, parallel planes.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the above mentioned disadvantages, while providing a relatively simple, easily man-ufactured window guard.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a window guard device comprising a pair of frame members, each said frame member including a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars for defining a fence; a first end plate on one end of the bars of each said frame member permanently interconnecting said one end of the bars for mounting the device on a window frame; a second end plate on the other end S of the bars permanently interconnecting the other ends of said bars of each frame member and slidably receiving the bars of the other frame member, whereby the frame members can be telescopically moved together and apart for changing the length of the device, the bars of both frame members being in a single plane.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate preferred embodi-ments of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from one end and above of a window guard device in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view from one end and above of a second embodiment of the window guard of the present invention.
With reference to Figure 1 of the drawings, the window guard device of the present invention includes a pair of telescopically engaged frame members generally indicated at 1 and 2. The frame members 1 and 2 include a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars 3 and 4, respectively. The bars 3 and 4 are permanently interconnected at their outer ends by an end plate 5, which has a L-shaped cross-sectional configuration. The end plate 5 is provided with holes 6 and 7 in the arms thereof for securing the end plate in a window opening. The holes 6 are used when the guard device is completely within the opening, screws (not shown) being inserted in the holes 6 in axial alignment with the bars 3 and 4. The holes 7 are used when the device overlaps a window frame (not shown), the screws (not shown) inserted in the holes 7 being perpendicular to the bars 3 and 4. The other ends of ihe bars 3 and 4 are intercon-nected by end plates 8 and 9. One plate 8 is connected to the inner ends of the bars 3 and 4, and the other plate 9 is spaced slightly therefrom.
~ach of the plates 8 and 9 is provided with holes 10 for slidably receiving the bars 3 or 4. The frames 1 and 2 are in the same plane and thus are staggered slightly with respect to each other. The additional end plate 9 prevents binding of the two frame members 1 and 2, when they are slid rel-ative to each other.
In use, the device is placed in a window opening, and the frames 1 and 2 are moved apart to define a fence across such opening. The end plates 5 are secured to the sides of the opening by screws (not shown) or the like.
As mentioned previously, Figure 2 of the drawings illustrates a second embodiment of the invention. Wherever possible, the reference numerals of Figure 1 have been used in Figure 2 to indicate the same or similar elements.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 2 is designed to be pivotally connected to a window frame. Accordingly, a piano-type hinge 11 is provided on one outer end plate 5 of the device with holes 12 in the free arm thereof for connecting the hinge to a window frame or the like. In order to lock the guard device in the closed position, locking means in the form of a plate 13 is provided on the other ~44Z~3 end plate 5 of the device. A similar plate 14 is permanently mounted on the side of the window frame opposite the hinge 11 by means of a pin 15.
Holes 16 (one shown) are provided in the plates 13 and 14. When the guard device is in the closed position, the holes 16 in the plates 13 and 14 are in alignment, and a lock can be placed on the device for retaining the device in the closed position.
Te'lescopic window guard devices are not new. Examples o-f such devices are found in Canadian Patent Nos. 287,463, issued to Q. M.

Accordingly, the present invention relates to a window guard device comprising a pair of frame members, each said frame member including a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars for defining a fence; a first end plate on one end of the bars of each said frame member permanently interconnecting said one end of the bars for mounting the device on a window frame; a second end plate on the other end S of the bars permanently interconnecting the other ends of said bars of each frame member and slidably receiving the bars of the other frame member, whereby the frame members can be telescopically moved together and apart for changing the length of the device, the bars of both frame members being in a single plane.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate preferred embodi-ments of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from one end and above of a window guard device in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a perspective view from one end and above of a second embodiment of the window guard of the present invention.
With reference to Figure 1 of the drawings, the window guard device of the present invention includes a pair of telescopically engaged frame members generally indicated at 1 and 2. The frame members 1 and 2 include a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars 3 and 4, respectively. The bars 3 and 4 are permanently interconnected at their outer ends by an end plate 5, which has a L-shaped cross-sectional configuration. The end plate 5 is provided with holes 6 and 7 in the arms thereof for securing the end plate in a window opening. The holes 6 are used when the guard device is completely within the opening, screws (not shown) being inserted in the holes 6 in axial alignment with the bars 3 and 4. The holes 7 are used when the device overlaps a window frame (not shown), the screws (not shown) inserted in the holes 7 being perpendicular to the bars 3 and 4. The other ends of ihe bars 3 and 4 are intercon-nected by end plates 8 and 9. One plate 8 is connected to the inner ends of the bars 3 and 4, and the other plate 9 is spaced slightly therefrom.
~ach of the plates 8 and 9 is provided with holes 10 for slidably receiving the bars 3 or 4. The frames 1 and 2 are in the same plane and thus are staggered slightly with respect to each other. The additional end plate 9 prevents binding of the two frame members 1 and 2, when they are slid rel-ative to each other.
In use, the device is placed in a window opening, and the frames 1 and 2 are moved apart to define a fence across such opening. The end plates 5 are secured to the sides of the opening by screws (not shown) or the like.
As mentioned previously, Figure 2 of the drawings illustrates a second embodiment of the invention. Wherever possible, the reference numerals of Figure 1 have been used in Figure 2 to indicate the same or similar elements.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 2 is designed to be pivotally connected to a window frame. Accordingly, a piano-type hinge 11 is provided on one outer end plate 5 of the device with holes 12 in the free arm thereof for connecting the hinge to a window frame or the like. In order to lock the guard device in the closed position, locking means in the form of a plate 13 is provided on the other ~44Z~3 end plate 5 of the device. A similar plate 14 is permanently mounted on the side of the window frame opposite the hinge 11 by means of a pin 15.
Holes 16 (one shown) are provided in the plates 13 and 14. When the guard device is in the closed position, the holes 16 in the plates 13 and 14 are in alignment, and a lock can be placed on the device for retaining the device in the closed position.
Claims (3)
PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS.
1. A window guard device comprising a pair of frame members, each said frame member including a plurality of longitudinally extending, parallel, spaced apart bars for defining a fence; a first end plate on one end of the bars of each said frame member permanently interconnecting said one end of the bars for mounting the device on a window frame; a second end plate on the other end of the bars permanently interconnecting the other ends of said bars of each frame member and slidably receiving the bars of the other frame member, whereby the frame members can be tele-scopically moved together and apart for changing the length of the device, the bars of both frame members being in a single plane.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein said second end plate includes a pair of plates secured on said other end of said bars of each frame member; and aligned holes in said pair of plates for slidably receiving the bars of said other frame member.
3. A device according to claim 1 including hinge means for con-necting to said first end plate of one said frame member for pivotally mounting said frame members on a window frame; and lock means on said first end plate of the other frame member for locking the device in the closed position.
