Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

The jet of an industrial washing machine jet assembly comprises a passage through a ball which is clamped to one end of a feeder pipe by a nut. The other end of the feeder pipe is clamped releasably to a header pipe by a stirrup clamp. Once the jet assembly has been located initially relative to the header pipe and clamped to the header pipe by the stirrup clamp, the plate of the stirrup clamp, the plate of the stirrup clamp is welded to the header pipe so that the jet assembly can be demounted for cleaning and remounted in the same location. Once the jet assembly is mounted on the header pipe, the jet is orientated by swivelling the ball whilst the nut is slackened off. The nut is tightened up to clamp the ball in the selected orientation.

Description

This invention relates to jet assemblies for mounting and locating at a washing station of an industrial washing machine so that, when in use they direct a pressure jet of washing fluid a~ a corresponding specific part of a component which is supported and located at that station.

Jets are provided at each of -the pre-wash and washing stations of the washing section of such industrial washing machines. The orientation of each jet is such that it is aligned with a corresponding blind hole, bore, cavity or other surface part of an engine block which is supported and located at the respective washing station so that washing fluid fed to and through each jet nozzle under pressure is directed at that aligned part of that engine block as a jet.
The machine has a sump into which washing fluid that drains from each engine block that is passed through the wash-ing section to the drying section is directed. A first pump is operable to draw washing fluid from the sump through prim-ary filtering means which preferably comprise a horizontal drum ; filter which operates to separate particles of solid matter from the washing fluid, and to ~eed the filtered washing fluid to a stora~e tank. A second pump is operable to draw washing fluid from the storage tank and to feed it under pressure -to the jets at each of the pre-wash and washing stations of the washing section ~ia header pipes.
~0 The present invention is concerned with the construc-tion of a washin~ fluid jet assembly and an arrangement for clamping such an assembly releasably to a washing fluid header pipe of the industrial washing machine, and will be described moxe ~ully with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 ls a part~ly sectioned view of one form of washing fluid jet assembly in which this invention is embodied and a releasable clamp arrangement by which that jet assembly is clamped to a washing fluid header pipe which is shown in section;
Figure 2 is an eleyation of the releasable clam~
arrangement shown in Fi~ure 1 as seen along arrow A in Figure 1;

~9~

Figure 3 is a section on the line III-III in Figure l;
Figure 4 is a sectioned fragmentary view similar to part o~ Figure 1 but showing details of another form of jet nozzle.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, a jet assembly 10 is clamped to a washing fluia header pipe 11 by a two part stirrup clamp arrangement 120 The first part of the stirrup clamp arrangement 12 is a casting. The casting has an arcuate portion 13, which has a hole 19 formed through it at its centre, and a tubular cuff 21 which projects from the convex surface of the arcuate portion 13 coaxially with the hole 19. The arcuate portion 13 carries a screw threaded stud 15 at either end. Th~ bore of the cuff is tapped.
The arcuate portion 13 of the first clamp part re-ceives the header pipe 11 within the bight formed by its concave sur~ace~ A gasket 20, which is formed from a suitable elasto-mer1c sheet material, such as neoprene rubber, and which has a hole in it of substantially the sDe diameter as the hole 19, is located between the header pipe 11 and the concave surface of the arcuate portion 13 with its hole aligned with the hole ~: 19.
The second part of the stirrup clamp arrangement 12 is a clamp plate 14 which is tangential to the outer surface of the header pipe 11 to which it is welded at its centre.
Each stud 15 projects through a respective one of a pair o~
holes 16 which are formed in the clamp plate 1~. Figure 2 shows that the holes 16 and the studs 15 are staggered. Each of a pair of nuts 17 is screwed onto a respective one of .

the screw threaded studs 15 to fasten the first clamp part re-leasably to the clamp plate 14 and to clamp the gasket 20 be-tween the arcuate portion 13 and the header pipe 11.
An outlet port 18 is formed in the wall of the header pipe 11 opposite the welded joint between the header pipe 11 and the clamp plate 14. The diameter of the outlet port 18 is substantially the same as that of the hole 19 and the hole in the gasket 20 with which it is aligned.
The jet assembly 10 comprises a washing fluid feeder pipe 22 which is a length of straight pipe of substantially uni-form diameter and which has screw threads formed on its outer surface at either end. One end of the pipe 22 is screwed into the cuff 21. A spherical body 23 is seated in the aperture 24 that i5 formed by the end of the bore of the feeder pipe 22 re-; mote from the cuff 21. A diametral passage through the spheri-cal body 23 forms a spreader jet no~zzle. The end portion 25 of the diametral passage that forms the end of the diametral pas-sage within the bore of the ~eeder pipe 22 is funnel shaped, tapering towards the centre of the spherical body 23~ The central portion 26 o~ the diametral passage has a substantially uni~orm cross-section and extends axially for a distance greater than the radius o~ the spherical body 23. A transverse notch 27 is formed in the outer surface of the spherical body 23 at the outer end of the diametral passage. The notch 27 was formed with a V-shaped tool so that it has side walls which converge towards the centre of the body 23. The diametral passage has another tapered portion by which the notch 27 and the central portion 26 are interconnected. That other tapered portion tap-ers towards the notch 27 so that a throat of restricted dimen-sions i5 formed at its junction with the notch 27 at the base of the notch 27. A nut 28 is screwed onto the end of the feeder tube 22 that is remote from the tubular cuff 21. An annular ridge 29 is formed in the radially inner surface of the nut 28 and engages the outer surface of the spherical body 23. The equater of the spherical body 23 extends between the periphery of the aperture 24 and the annular ridge 29 so that the spheri-cal body 23 is trapped between the nut 28 and the feeder tube 22 and can be clamped therebetween against movement relative to the nut 28 and the feeder tube 22.
During initial assembl~ of the industrial washing machine, the first clamp part of the stirrup clamp arrangement 12, the jet assembly 10 to which the first clamp part is bonded coaxially and the gasket 20 are presented to the header pipe 11 so that the bore of the feeder tube 22, the hole 19 through the arcuate portion 13 of the first clamp part and the hole in the gasket 20 are aligned with the outlet port 18 that is formed in the header pipe 11. The clamp plate 14 is then fitted over the screw threaded studs 15 on the opposite side of the header pipe 11 and the nuts 17 are tightened up to fasten the clamp plate 14 to the arcuate clamp part 13 and clamp the header pipe 11 between the two parts of the stirrup clamp arrangement 12 with the gasket 20 clamped between the header pipe 11 and the arcuate portion 13. Whilst held in that position by the clamping action of the buts 17 engaged on the screw threaded studs 15, the clamp plate 14 is welded to the adjacent part of the header pipe 11 which it contacts.
In order to align the axis o~ the jet nozzle with the : bore or other corresponding part of the component towards which it is intended to direct a jet of pressure fluid when the industrial washing machine is in operation, the nut 28 ~ 9~

is slackened of~ from the feeder pipe 22 to allow angular move-ment of the spherical body 23 relative to the feeder pipe 22 and the nut 28. A bar is inserted through the throat and into the uniform diameter portion 26 of the diametral passa~e in the spherical body 23 and employed as an aid to align that passage with the bore or corresponding part of the component towards which the pressure jet of washing fluid is to be directed.
Once the jet nozzle formed by the diametral passage through the spherical body 23 has been satisfactorily aligned by this pro-cedure, the nut 28 is tightened up to fix the spherical body 23 in that position.
It will be appreciated that the jet assembly 10 can be released from the header pipe 11 readily by release of the nuts 17 and separation of the first clamp part from the clamp plate 14 that is welded to the header pipe 11, so that the bore of the feeder pipe 22 and the diametral passage through the spheri-cal body 23 can be cleared of any swarf or other foreign matter that may have blocked it. The jet assembly 10 is readily re-located in substantially the same location relative to the header pipe 11 by reassembling the two part stirrup clamp arrange-ment 12 and fastening the nuts 17 upon the respect~ve screw threaded ends I5.
The notch 27 of the jet nozzle results in the pressure - jet of washing ~luid that is directed by the jet assembly 10 towards the corresponding part of a component that is supported and located at the washing station bein~ a divergent jet of washing ~luid so that the jet nozzle is known as a spreader jet nozzle. Another form o~ pressure jet nozzle which has been pro-posed comprises the formation in a similar spherical body 23 of a transverse parallel sided slot instead of the notch 27 and the other tapered passage portion that co-operates with that ~g~ 9 notch to form the throat. The width of the parallel sided slot is less than the diameter of the passage portion 26 that it intersects and its longitudinal axis intersects the axis of the diametral through passage.
Figure 4 shows another form of spherical body 23A
which differs from the spherical body 23 by omission of the notch 27 and the other tapered portion of the diametral passage, the substantially uniform cross-section portion 26A of the di-ametral passage extending to the outer end of that diametral passage remote from the funnel shaped portion 2~A so that the pressure jet emitted by the jet nozzle of the spherical body 23B will be a plain jet.
The spherical body 23 or 23A may be formed from a plastics material.
Various other modifications of the embodiment of the invention that has been described above with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying clrawings may be made if de-sired.
~ For example the arcuate part of the stirrup clamp arrangement and the tubular cuf may be separate pieces welded together~ A top hat section seal may be used instead of the gasket 20, the tubular part being inserted into the hole 19 to locate the seal, and the brim being shaped to fit the ar-cuate space between the arcuate clamp portion and the header pipe 11 within which it is clamped~
