Description

73~:3 The present invention relates to a wire tensioner.
A wire tensioner is known comprising a multi-sided bolt with a slot for receiving the wire and a slip-over metal safety mechanism to prevent recoil. Such wire tensioner is designed for tensioning single wires without interruption. This is an advan-taye which the wire tensioner dominating the market does not have.
In the case of the latter tensioner a wire end on an oval-shaped sheet iron casiny is pulled through a hole and looped with a special tool while a transversely supported axle having a hole receives the other wire end and winds only this end around the shaft. The counterpressure with respect to the loop requires the use of a plurality of tensioner sizes, depending on the wire thickness, and with the wire beiny guided through a hole in the sheet iron casing barbed wire will not pass through. However, the first mentioned tensioner cannot join wire and necessarily tips over sideways since it lacks any means for holding the multi-sided bolt, which acts as a wind-up shaft at right angles to the wire. Therefore, it is not possible to attach a locking member to prevent recoil. None of the conventional attachable tensioners can automatically hold back the wire beiny tensioned.
The present invention provides a wire tensioner wi~ll whic:l these disad~antayes are avoided and provides for the direct tensioning of barbed wire. The present invention also provides a wire tensioner of simple construction which is capable of tension-ing continuous loase wires at any point and also joining two wires and tensioning them.
2~

According to the present invention there is provided a wire tensioner adapted to tension a continuous wire or join and tension a pair of wires, said tensioner comprising a multi sided bolt, a plate integral with one end of said bolt, said plate having a slot extendin~ through the centre thereof and dividing the plate into two plate halves, said one end of said bolt having an axial opening extending thereacross in alignment with said slot for unimpededly receiving said continuous wire in said slot, said ~0 - la -%3 opening being closed by said wire on axial rotation of said bolt by an auxiliary tool, the wire, on rotation of said bolt windin~
therearound from two opposite sides with said bolt being main-tained at right angles to the wire by said plate, each of said plate halves having an opening, said openings lying on a diagonal of said plate and being adapted to receive the ends of a pair of wires to be joined, and a locking member having a hole therein to non-rotatably accommodate the multi-sided bolt and grooves therein for accommodating said wire which locking member on placing of the wire in one of said grooves rigidly connecting the wire and the bolt accommodated in said hole.
In accordance with the present invention a one piece tensioning member is provided preferably made of die cast light metal which is inexpensive and rustproof. For strong wires, such as wire ropes, noncutting drop forging is recommended as the method of production of the one piece member. The tensioning member comprises a multi-sided bolt, which is the wire-windup shaft and has one end in the shape of a round or square plate.
The diameter of the plate is at least twice as large as that of the multi-sided bolt. At each tensioning, the plate acts as a stabilizer maintaining the bolt of the tensioning member at right angles to the wire when tightening occurs. ~part from this func-tion, the plate has two openings one on each side of the multi-sided bolt so that a wire can be placed into each opening and two ; wires may thus be joined. At the free end of the multi-sided bolt an auxiliary tool is applied, for ~xample, a ratchet box spanner so that with counter-clockwise or clockwise rotation the wire can be wound, from two sides, uniformly intermeshing around the hole forming the wind-up shaft. The rapid tensioning of continuous wires is more important economically. The tensioner receives the continuous wire through a slot, which e~tends through the centre of the plate and divides it into two parts.

Since the wire must be below the plate, in the bolt forming the wind-up shaft, -the slot is deepened to extend into the multi-sided bolt. The width and depth of the slot depend on the maxi-mum wire thickness to be accommodated by the tensioner. Accord-ing to the invention the tensioner is distinguished particularly by the free access of the wire to the opening in the end of the bolt. However, this opening is closed as soon as tihe bolt rotates and the wire moves therearound. So tha-t thin wires can also be held and have no play in the opening in the end of the bolt the latter is provided with a radius at the point where it abuts against the plate opposite the opening in the end of the bolt.
This radius has a conical outer surface with respect to the opening in the end of the bolt and presses the wire against the bottom of the opening before it can rise on the plate and winds itself around the wind-up shaft. The radius also is a side reinforcement at the opening in the end of the bolt. In order to save material and to be able to use an auxiliary tool, which cooperates with an inner edge of the bolt, the multi-sided bolt may be partially or entirely hollow. A locking member is provided to prevent the wire from recoiling when it is subjected to stresses. Such a locking member can be a strip with an angular portion with a perforation at the centre or a washer having an angular portion.
The perforation corresponds in size to the size of the bolt. The locking member can be slipped over the bolt and cannot be rotated independently of its bolt. The short angular portion has circu-lar grooves into which the wire is put.
The present invention will be further illustrated by way of the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1, is a front view of a wire tensioner in accor-dance with one embodiment of the presen-t invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the wire tensioner of Figure 1, ~ 3 -Figure 3 is a front end of a lockiny member of the tensioner of Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a plan view of the locking member of Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 a circular plate 1 is integral with one end of a multi-sided bolt 2. The tensioning member is moulded under pressure from a light metal or is produced by stamping. A slot 3 divides the plate 1 into two parts and provides for free access of a continuous wire to an axial opening 4 in the end of the bolt 2. A radius 7 reinforces the multi-sided bolt opposite the opening 4 and forms a conical outer surface to more firmly hold the wire in the axial opening 4. This opening 4 is closed by the wire on rotation of the bolt 2. An auxiliary tool, for example, a ratchet box spanner is applied to the bolt 2 to wind the wire around said bolt in a counterclockwise or clockwise direction. The continuous wire which is tensioned in this manner is not shown in the drawing, but the joining and ten-ioning of two wires 8 and 9 is shown. Thus, the angular ends 13 of the wires 8 and 9 are put into the recesses ~, shown once in the disc land once in the slot 3. The two wires 8 and 9 are wound from two sides, uniforrnly intermeshing around the bolt 2 as soon as the rotation of the bolt 2 occurs. Figure 3 and 4 show an L-shaped locking member 10, which has a hole 11 on the leg por-tion thereof~ The hole 11 can be slipped over thP multi-sided bolt 2 ana i5 not rotatable with respect thereto. The foot por-tion has the lateral recesses 12 and a top recess 14, where the wire is held by tightening to a greater or smaller extent. The foot portion can have many recesses at the outer edge.
