Abstract

H. ?bel 19 CIRCUIT ARRANGEMENT FOR ADJUSTING THE AMPLI-FICATION OF THE SIGNALS OF A PLURALITY OF CHAN-NELS TO THE SAME VALUE

Abstract of the Disclosure To permit uniform, common gain control of a plurality of channels by means of unselected semiconductor devices having greatly varying characteristics, a circuit is proposed which turns these semiconductor devices either fully "on" or "off", and effects the control by varying the on-off ratio. To do this, a sawtooth signal is superimposed on the control signal, and the resulting signal is applied to the semicon-ductor devices through a threshold switch.

Description

CIRCUIT ARRANGE~NT FOR ADJUS~ING THE AMPLIFICATION
OF THE SIGNALS OF A PLURALITY OF CHANNELS
TO THE SAM~ VALUE

The present invention relates to a circuit arrangement ~or adjusting the amplification of the signals of a plurality of channels to the same value.
To an~lify signals, use is made o~ active components, such as trans-istors. However, the values of these components vary relatively widely; ~his tYill pre~ent difficulties if a plurality of channels are to be amplified to the s~le value separately from each other.
1~ The object of the invention is to achieve the same amplification in a plurality of channels by means of unselected components. The invention is cllaracterized in that a controlled switch and a band-pass filter are inser-ted in each channel, that, for the common control of the switches, a square-tYave generator is cormected to the switches via an integrator, the first input of an adding circuit, and a threshold circùit, and that a control vol-tage is applied to the second input of the adding circuit, with the range of the control voltage, the output amplitude o the integrator, and the value of the threshold voltage of the threshold circuit matched so that the switches can be operated with an arbitrary duty c~cle.
~O The invention will now be described with reference to the accompany-ing dratYings, in which:
Figure 1 sho~Ys the circuit arrangement according to the inven~ion, ancl Figure 2 shows voltage waveorms to explain the operation o~ the circuit arrangement of Figure 1.
Figure 1 sho~s the circuit arrangement according to the invention For adjusting the channels l...n, n switches Sl...Sn are provided which may .

``` .~g5~4~76 be implemented using semiconductors in the "off" or "on" state. The switch-es Sl...Sn are followed by band-pass filters BPl...~Pn which eliminate the un~anted frequencies caused by the s~itching operation.
The s~itches Sl...Sn are controlled by means of a threshold circuit SCH, an adding c.i~cuit ADD, a square-wave ge~erator OSZ, and an integrator IG.
The function of these devices is, in principle, to vary the duty cycles of the switches Sl...Sn as a function of a control voltage UR, and thus to con-trol the amplitude of the output signal having the frequency of the input sig-nal.
The operation of the arrangement ~ill no~ be explained with the aid of Figure 2.
Figure 2 shows the output-voltage waveforms of the devices of Figure 1. The waveforms represent (from top to bottom) the output voltage U~OSZ) of the square-wave generator OSZ;
the output voltage U~IG) of the integrator IG;
the control voltage UR;
the output voltage of ~he adding circui~ ADD=U~OSZ)~UR;
the output voltage U(SCEI) of the threshold circuit SCH;
a sinusoidal input voltage UE~n) of the channel n, a~d the output voltage UA(n) of the chc^~nel n, amplified in accordance with the invention.
In the exam~le, a linearly decreasing voltage has been chosen as the control voltage UR.
The threshold circuit SCH is set to a threshold value SW adapted to the possible control voltages UR.
The decreasing control voltage UR causes the superposed voltage U
(OSZ)~UR to exceed the threshold S~ for increasingly shorter periods of time, .
thus causing an output voltage U~SCH).
Let T be a cycle of the voltage U~IG), tl the period during which an output voltage U(SC~) is present, and t2=T-tl the period during which no output voltage U~SC}I) is present. It can be seen from Figure 2 that the ~ecreasing control voltage UR causes a decrease in the pulse duty factor tl/
t2 and, consequently, a reduction of the output signal having the frequency of the input voltage UE~n), because the switches Sl...S2 are opened and closed by the voltage U~SC~I). It is thus possible to control the amplitude of the output signal having the frequency of the input signal by varying the control voltage UR; the effective output voltage U~n) is U~n)=UE t2/T
Since the factor t2/T is the same for all channels, the same con-trol is obtained for all channels, which is only dependent on the ~common) cqntrol voltage UR.
One possibility of generating a suitable control voltage UR is to form the sum voltage of all channels behind the band-pass filters BPl...BPn, rectify it, and use it to drive the adding circuit.
