Abstract
Abstract of Disclosure A three-phase tap-changing switching device immersed in a body of oil separate from the body of oil in which the trans-former is immersed that is connected to, and cooperates with, the switching device. The tap-changing switching device in-cludes an oil-tight substantially cylindrical sub-housing effecting a separation of the oil space of the transformer from the oil space o f the switching device. Said sub-housing is arranged within ? housing proper having a flanged lateral opening that contains a lattice structure supporting the ends of the conductors conductively interconnecting said transformer and the terminal o f said tap-changing switching device.
Description
~ ?~
Back~round of the Invention This invention relates to three-phase tap-chang1ng switching devices. Such switching devices are generally oil imrnersed.
They are affixed by a flanged member to the oil tank of a trans-former which is provided with a similar flanged member. Both flanged members are adapted to cooperate and to provide passage-ways for conductively interconnecting the tap-changing swit~hing device with the transformer whose winding is, or whose windings are, tapped. In such a composite device including a tapped trans-former winding under oil, and a switching device which is oilimmersed, the body of oil of the transformer must be separate from the body of oil of the switching device since the latter is gradually co~taminated by products of arcing. The separation ~, o~ the oil space of the transformer from that of the switching device is generally effected by an insulating plate arranged between the oil tank of the transformer and the oil tank housing the switchiQg device- The insulating plate is affixed to the aforementioned flanged member of the oil tank of the switching device~ It forms part of a bushi~g structure for interconnecting the tra~sformer a~d the switching device. The insulating plate for separating the body of oil of a transformer ~rom the body of oil of a switching device must meet high standards. It must be mechanically strong, oil-tight, and have a high dielectric strength to avoid electrical breakdowns between adjacent con-ductors. To this end the insulating plates separating the oil ; spaces o~ the transformer and o~ the switching device may be provided with collars surrounding the terminal members thereo~O
The separation of the body of oil of the transformer and the body of oil of the tap-changing switching device is more fully 30 described in U.S.Patent 3,805,205 to Alexander Bleibtreu ~or MEANS FOR SEPARATING THE BODY OF OIL OF A TRANSFORMER AND THE

CONTACT STP~UCTU~E~ issued June 12,19730 The tap-changing switching device enclosed in sub-housing 3 Is attached to a switch head 4 which, in turn, is suspended in housing 1. Re-~erence numeral 5 has been applied to indicate a motor drive af~ixed by a flange to housing 1. The drive gear for operating the tap-changing switching device has not been shown in the drawing, except for a coupling 6 interposed between motor drive 5 and switch head 4, since such drive gears are well known in the artO
The opening 2 in the flanged portion of tank 1 and the ~; opening 7 in the flanged portion of the transformer tank are o~
equal size and register when housing 1 is aEfixed to the trans-former tank~ The opening 2 in housing 1 proper contains a lattice struc~ure including three horizontal cable supports 8.
The lattice structure supports the ends of conductors or cables conductively intercon~ecting the transformer and the tap-changi~g switching device inside of sub-housing 3. The lattice structure inside of opening 2 includes three horizontal cable - : supports, one for each o the three phases, Each cable support 8 is provided with a plurality of notches 10 for receiving cables conductively interconnecting the transformer and the stationary - terminals 9 of the switching device inside o~ sub-housing 30 . Cables 12 connected to terminals 9 are inserted lnto notches 10.
Reference numerals 11 have beeo applied to indicate the ends of cables 12 projecting beyond supports 80 These ends are in-sulated and provided with squashed sleeve members 13 receiving the ends of the corresponding cables coming from the transformerO
This makes it possible to conductively connect cables 12 with . corresponding cables c~ing from the transformer by simple squashing operations of sleeve members 13.
. The switching device inside of oil-tight sub-housing 3 may be suppor~ed, as mentioned above, by switch head 4, which is . ~_ .:
the conventional way of support.ing the switching device. As an alternative, the bottom 14 o~ houslng 1 may be provided with an opening 15 and support s.ub-housing 3. Opening 15 may be normally closed by a cover 16. This facilitates the maintenance of the tap-changing switch, which may be rendered accessible from the bottom as well as from the top of the switch structure~
