Abstract

Abstract The invention is a furnace door seal consisting of a Z-shaped angle-piece with two legs at right angles to the web, the upper leg and web of which bear against the upper edge of the door-frame. The advantage is that the seal is easily replaceable and is so designed that the brick work is protected against distortion of the door-frame.

Description

The invention relates to the door-frame of a furnace door, more particularly to the frame of a coke oven door, having an upper seal consist-ing of a steel ~ection.
Door-frames of this kind are fitted and secured to the front brick-work of the furnace to define the door opening. When the furnace is in operation, the brickwork in the vicinity of the top side of the frame is attacked by gases and flames, and there is therefore a danger that the brick-work at that location will be destroyed, and the gases and flames will escape from the furnace above the door-frame. This would not only endanger the operating personnel, but, under certain circumstances would lead to damage of buckstays, crosstie springs, and other furnace components.
In order to prevent this, it has long been known to fit an asbestos cord seal between the brickwork and the door-frame. This solution, however, has the disadvantage that after a short time, the asbestos cord becomes com-pressed, leading to leaks and the escape of gases and flames.
According to another known door-frame design, the frame is inserted into a base frame made of L-shaped steel sections, the door-frame and basic frame being firmly connected together. As a result of this arrangement, any thermal or mechanical deformation of the door-frame is transferred by the base frame to the brickwork, which is thus destroyed. It then becomes very difficult to permanently eleminate the resulting leaks.
Another furnace door frame is known in which the upper seal includ-es protective plates fitted to the furnace wall, the plates being extended around the door frame. In this design, renewing the seal involves replacing all of the protective plates.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a door-frame of the type mentioned at the beginning hhreof, in which the seal is easily replaced and, furthermore, is so designed that the brickwork is protected against distortion of the door-frame.
According to the invention, this purpose is achieved in that the .-: . - ~ -~08~ 3 top seal of the door-~a~e ls ih the form of a generall~ Z-shaped member, the web and 1egs of which are at right angles and the web and upper leg of which bear against the upper edge of the door-frame to whlch the seal is secured by means of bo~ts passing through the said upper leg.
It is desirable for the inwardly-directed lower leg of the seal to be in alignment with the top inner surface of the furnace chamber.
I~ is also desi~able that the seal be p~ovided with stiffening ribs.
~ he pa~ticular di~ensions of the Z-shaped mlmber should be adapted to tho æ of the bricks in the brickwork.
The invention is a door-frame for a furnace door for a coke oven, having an upper seal in the form of a cast iron sectiOn, characterized in that the seal consists of a gene a lly Z-shaped angle-piece with a web and an upper leg and an inwardly-directed lower leg, the legs being substantially at right angles to the web, the web and upper leg o which bear against the upper edge o a d -ra~me to which they æ e secured b~ ~eans of pins or bolts passing through the said upper leg.
~or th2 pu~pose o i~lustration, but not of limitation, an e~bcdimEnt o the invention will be he~einater discussed with reference to the drawings in which:
Figu~e 1 is a ront elevation of tbe upper p æ t of a door-rame aocording to the inventiDn; and Figu~e 2 is a section along the line II-II in Figure 1.
Figu~es 1 and 2 show the upper part o a doo~-rame 1 secured, in kncwn ashion to the b~ichwo~k o u~nace wall 2. For the puLpose of sealing the upper part o the rame in ~elation to tbe brickwc~k, a cast-iron angle piece 3 is itted to doo~-~ame 1, the said angle-piece having a generally Z-shaped proile with the legs keing at right angles to the web. Web 4 is twioe the length o legs 5 and 6. Angle-piece 3 is provided with stiening ribg 7, 8, 9 and is o a size such that the width the~eo is greaber than the width o the u~nace cpenLng, so that the two ends o the said angle-piece ;

108~3 lap longitudinal sides 10, 11 of the door-frame. Web 4 and upper leg 5 of angle-piece 3 bear against door-frame 1 to which the angle-piece is secured by means of threaded pins 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, with nuts 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d, screwed into the door-frame, with a sealing strip 14 made of asbestos, or some similar material, between the angle-piece 3 and the door-frame 1.
The angle-piece 3 is designed in a manner such that inwardly-directed lower leg 6 is in alignment with the top inner surface of furnace 15. The dimensions of the said angle-piece 3 are adapted to those of the bricks in the brickwork, so that the width of the leg corresponds approxi-mately to the length of a covering brick.
After angle-piece 3 has been secured to door-frame 1, the door-frame is inserted into the brickwork of furnace wall 2 in such a manner that the door-frame and angle-piece assume the position shown in Figure 2 in relation to the refractory portion of the chamber covering. Thereafter, cavities 16, 17 remaining between the brickwork and and angle-piece 3 and --door-frame 1 are filled with a suitable refractory mortar and are thus sealed If angle-piece 3 is damaged, while the furnace is in operation, as a result of thermal or mechanical action, and if leaks result, it is possible to replace the angle-piece without removing door-frame 1. To this end about two courses of bricks are removed from above the door-frame, nuts 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d are removed, and angle-piece 3 is taken out. After the new angle-piece has been fitted, the brickwork above door-frame 1 is restored and the cavities 16, 17 are again filled.
