Description
7 ~ ~
The present invention relates to cigarette packaging machines for forming stiff packets of cigarettes oE the so-called "hinged-lid" type. In particular, tha present invention relates to an apparatus for preparing the so-called "inner elements or collars" which are essential components of such type of packet.
The present invention will be illustrated by way of -~
the accompanying drawings in which~
Figure l is a perspective view of an apparatus according ; ~`~
to one embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the apparatus of Fig. l; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a length of card-board ~ ;
tape which was subjected to the action of the apparatus for pre- -paring inner elements in accordance with the present invention. --Referring to Figure 3 one inner element comprises, as -is known, a central panel or zone 2 and two equal lateral wings or flaps 3. Between each flap 3 and the central panel there are a series of indentations 4 which define a weakening line to enable folding, and a cut 5. The inner elements l are formed in the cigarette packaging machine itself for forming stiff packets of cigarettes, such packets being obtained from a continuous thin card-board type N.
According to applicants Canadian Patent Application No.
211,638 the card-board tape is fed to a cutting means which is arranged to cut it into single inner elements 1 by moving it for-ward along a horizontal feeding track along which means for form- - -iny the indentations 4 and the cuts 5 as well as driving means are located. Both these means comprise cutting rollers rotating in opposite directions, act on two distinct areas along said feeding track and are driven by the same intermittent motion source through a gear train. According to the aforesaid copending Patent Applic-ation, in order to obtain good results, i.e. inner elements of , ~;
,, ,.. . .
, ' ' . ~ :
` ~387~ ~
accurate longitudinal dimensions formed with cuts 5 rightly located along the folding line, it is necessary to eliminate with great care any cause of con-tact loss or sliding between the driving rollers and the card-board tape and to avoid even minimum play between the numerous gears in the gear train.
Accordingly, the apparatus disclosed in the aforesaid copending Patent Application comprises means for manually adjusting the pressure of the driving rollers on the tape and devices are arranged to ensure constant meshing between teeth of the gears in the gear train.
Although such remedies are quite effective, they have, however, a number of drawbacks because of lack of practicality ;~
- and accuracy when'manual adjustments are made, which results in a highIy expensive apparatus owing to the large number of gears to be'used.
The present invention thus provides an apparatus of ; the above-mentioned type in which the pressure of the drivingrollers on the card-board tape is automatically adjustable and substantially uniform and in which the drawbacks faced when using a large number of driving gears are drastically reduced. `
- The present invention also provides an apparatus of the above-mentioned type which is more compact, simplier and much more economical in structure than the conventional apparatus referred to above.
According to the present invention there is provided j an apparatus for forming the so-called i'inner elements or collars" ' ~' in cigarette packaging machines for packaging cigarettes intosingle packets of hinged-lid type, said apparatus comprising a feeding track for feeding a tape of material to be subdivided into ' 30 single inner elements, roller means in combination with back roller means for driving and intermittently feeding said tape along said track, indentation and cutting means arranged to form indentations . , :
~3~7 and cuts between the indentations in combination with back roller means, and a device for transversely cutting the tape to obtain equal inner elements from the tape, said roller means and said respective back roller rneans for driving and feeding the tape being respectively co-axial with said indentation and cutting means and said respective back roller means, at least one of -;
two series which includes said roller means and said correspond~
ing back roller means, respectively, for driving and feeding the tape comprising a sleeve body of resiliently yielding material located between the corresponding central core or hub and the respective outer peripheral band of rigid e.g. metallic material.
In one embodiment of the apparatus of the present invention the roller means and said corresponding back roller means for driving and feeding the tape are arranged to form a plurality of outer annular driving bands. Desirably said plurality of outer annular driving bands are connected to a single central hub by means of the sleeve body of resiliently yielding material.
2Q In another embodiment of the apparatus of the present ~-invention the roller means and said corresponding back roller ~ means for driving and feeding the tape are located between the ~-- pair of said indentation and cutting roller means and the ! respective pair of said corresponding back roller means.
; Referring once more to the drawings and particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 6 the apparatus comprises a casing 6 fixed by means (not shown) to the base oE a cigarette packaging machine for forming stiff cigarette packets of the "hinged-lid" type.
A horizontal shaft 8 carried in the side walls of the casing 6 via eccentric bushings 7 is intermittently rotated in counter-clockwise direction by means (not shown).
, .
Two similar gears 9 and 9 arranged side-by-side , . . . .
"'' ' ' ' ' ; ' ~3~
outside the casing 6, are keyed at the left hand end of the shaft 8, and rotate gear 1~ which in turn drives a shaft 11 parallel to and vertically aligned with the shaft ~. A pair of discs 12 and 13 are mounted on the shaft 11 inside the casing 6, each disc being located adjacent to one of two inner opposite side walls of the casing 6. A pair of rollers 1~ and 15 are mounted between discs 12 and 13 and are fixedly connected with one another. A pair of back rollers 16 and 17 are mounted on ~ ~-the shaft 8 and are tangential with the discs 12 and 13, resp- -ectively. Shaft 8 also carries a pair of back rollers 18 and 19 which are fixedly connected to one another and are tangential to the rollers 14 and 15, respectively. The pair of rollers 18 and 19 c`omprise an inner ring 20 of a resilient material such as rubbex and an outer ring 21 of a rigid material such as a metal.
The uninterrupted card-board tape N i5 unwound from a coil (not shown) and is pulled in a horizontal plane by the two pairs of rollers 14, 18 and 15, 19 which act on the central area thereof. The discs 12 and 13 which have cutting sections around their periphery cut out two successions of parallel and longitud-inal indentations 4 in co-operation with respective rollers 16 and 17, the indentations 4 in each succession including cuts 5 formed at regular intervals. Tape N is then passed to cutting means such as of the type described in the aforesaid copending Application (not shown) to be cut into single inner elements.
In order to obtain perfectly cut inner elements 1 it is suf~icienk to bring the back rollers 16 and 17 into close contact with the peripheral cutting edge of the respective discs 12 and 13.
This operation is very simply carried out upon setting the apparatus by rotating khe eccentric bushing 7 and by causing it to enter respective seats. Slotted plates or handles 22 fixedly connected to bushings 7 are provided for that purpose. The ,...... . .
3~17~a7 ; ~ -handles 22 are formed with through slots by means of which they can be attached to khe side walls of the casing 6.
; The inner rinys 20 of resilient material as a part o~ -rollers 18 and 19 ensures uniform contact throughout the operation of the apparatus between the driving means and the card-board tape N at such a pressure that any significant sliding movement .
; is prevented.
The gears 9 and 9' have through slots to allow small relative rotations to be made in order to eliminate possible play between the gears 9 and 9' and gear 10. :~
