Abstract
The present invention relates to a bristle configuration that provides optimal cleaning of the teeth. The bristle pattern includes large tufts that have a larger cross-sectional area than standard toothbrush bristle tufts. The large tufts are contoured so that the top ends of the bristles comprising the large tufts are not all of the same height. More than one elevated section is provided, the elevated sections are spatially isolated from each other to function independently of each other. Preferably, at least one of the raised sections has a brushing surface area with bristles that extend at a sufficient height above the surrounding bristles so that the raised section can penetrate and clean the interdental surfaces, preferably while the remaining bristles in the large tuft they clean other dental surfaces. Another aspect of the invention relates to a zigzag or sawtooth bristle profile in which each tuft that makes up the profile has its own unique substantially conical or frusto-conical profile. In one embodiment, the height of the conical or frusto-conical tufts increases from the sides of the head towards the midline of the head.

CAMPO DA INVENÇÃOFIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to toothbrush bristle profiles. More particularly, the present invention relates to unique bristle tuft profiles.
ANTECEDENTES DA INVENÇÃOBACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Toothbrushes generally have a plurality of bristle tufts, each tuft having a plurality of bristles for removing plaque and debris from tooth surfaces. Typically, the tufts of bristles are configured to brush the outer surfaces of the teeth, ie the buccal (cheek-facing), Iingual (tongue-facing), and occlusal (chewing) surfaces of the teeth. Flossing is effective in removing plaque and debris from interdental or interproximal surfaces. However, not all individuals floss regularly, and some individuals hardly floss. Accordingly, it is desirable that toothbrush bristle profiles (the contour of the free ends of the bristles facing the teeth fitting, cleaning and brushing, as seen from a side elevation view) are designed to remove plaque and debris not only from the bristles. external surfaces of teeth but also interdental surfaces of teeth. Massaging and stimulating the gums is also considered beneficial for good dental health. Consequently, it is also desirable for toothbrushes to have gingival and interdental stimulation as well as good interdental cleaning.
Commercially available toothbrushes with flat bristle profiles (ie all free ends of the bristles are at substantially the same level, in other words, are coplanar) clean the outer surfaces of the teeth properly but are not able to clean interdental surfaces. and provide interdental stimulation such as toothbrushes with contoured bristle profiles (which have free ends at different heights). Several bristle profiles, such as repeated V-shaped profiles (aka, sawtooth or zigzag), are known to increase the effectiveness of toothbrush cleaning and gum stimulation.
Commercial toothbrushes typically have a brushing surface area (the surface area occupied by bristle-free ends) of approximately 25.4 to 35.8 mm (1 to 1.25 inch) in length and 7.9 to 9.5 mm (5/16 to 3/8 inches) wide. The bristles are generally arranged in 4 to 6 longitudinally extending rows (i.e., from the distal to proximal end of the head, or in other words, from the tip of the head towards the handle) of 5 to 14 tufted bristles per row , and approximately 20 to 50 bristles per tuft. Typical tufts are approximately 1.6 mm (0.063 inch) in diameter, with a cross-sectional area of approximately 2 mm2 (0.079 inch). Commonly used bristle diameters are: 0.15 mm (0.006 inch) for soft bristles, 0.2 mm (0.008 inch) for medium bristles, and 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) for hard bristles. The diameter of the bristles used on a brush generally increases the hardness of the bristles or tufts, and generally extends the life of the brush. However, such increases generally negatively affect interdental brush cleaning as well as gum wear, because the bristles are not so readily movable or foldable to fit within the interdental spaces.
Consequently, there is a continuing desire to improve the interdental cleanliness of toothbrushes, specifically since many individuals do not floss. In addition, there is a desire to increase brush life.
SUMÁRIO DA INVENÇÃOSUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a toothbrush is formed with a bristle profile that provides superior interdental cleaning. According to one aspect of the present invention, at least one tuft of bristles is provided with a larger number of bristles than in typical bristle tufts and with a larger brushing surface area than typical bristle tufts, such a large tuft of bristles. contoured bristles to provide superior interdental cleaning. In particular, the large bristle tuft has at least two raised sections of bristles separated from each other by shorter bristles. The large bristle tuft has a sufficient number of bristles to impart the increased hardness, stiffness, and cleaning efficiency typical of larger area bristle tufts. However, because the raised sections are isolated from each other, such sections have the flexibility and interdental range of typical bristle tufts that have fewer bristles than the larger area bristle tuft. Raised sections of the large bristle tuft can brush around the teeth and reach interproximal areas, and the lower sections of the large bristle tuft can polish the outer surfaces of the teeth.
According to another aspect of the present invention, a toothbrush may be formed with standard brushing surface area bristle tufts, each bristle tuft being contoured to have a substantially conical or frusto-conical profile. In addition, the highest or highest bristle heights in the conical bristle tufts vary across the toothbrush brushing surface area. Consequently, such bristle tufts are contoured for prompt interdental cleaning now being at different heights and spaced from each other for even better opportunities to reach the interdental surfaces of the user's teeth.

DESCRIÇÃO DETALHADA DA INVENÇÃODETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
An exemplary toothbrush 100 to which the principles of the present invention may be applied as illustrated in Fig. 1, with a head 110 shown in isolation in Figs. 2 and 3. The handle portion 102 and neck portion 104 of the exemplary toothbrush 100 are angled with respect to each other, but need not be for the purposes of the present invention. Toothbrush 100 has a proximal end 106 (on which a handle 102 is provided to be held by a user) and a distal end 108 (on which the head 110 is provided) along the longitudinal direction L. The longitudinal direction L is defined in the present invention as the direction generally extending along the length of the toothbrush 100 between the proximal end 106 and the distal end 108. The longitudinal direction L may extend along the handle portion 102 or neck portion 104 or along one direction therebetween. The transverse direction T is defined in the present invention with a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction L1 as extending across the width of the toothbrush head 110. For electric toothbrush applications, the handle portion 102 may have fastening means. suitable (not shown) located at the proximal end 106 for connecting toothbrush 100 to a power supply or drive means.
The toothbrush head 110 has a head surface 112 from which the bristles 114 extend. The bristles 114 may include a front tuft 116 at the most proximal end of the head surface 112 configured to reach the rear of the wearer's teeth. Typically, a front tuft is a larger bristle tuft which preferably has an angled contour, as illustrated in the exemplary embodiment of Figures 1 to 3. Gum massagers 118 may optionally be provided extending from the head surface 112, and configured to massage the user's gums and / or to indicate if the toothbrush is being used with too much pressure against the gums. Gum massagers 118 are preferably formed of a soft, resilient material such as an elastomer. The height of the gum massagers 118 may be selected to be less than the height of any of the cleaning bristles extending from the surface of the head 112.
The exemplary toothbrush illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 has an adult sized head. It will be appreciated that the principles of the present invention, to be detailed below, may be applied to other types of heads, such as compact heads, or smaller heads used in infant toothbrushes. For example, more compact head models can be obtained by not including a front tuft, eliminating multiple bristle tufts, and / or eliminating some all gum massagers.
Os tufos contornados da presente invenção têm uma área em seção transversal de preferência maior que pelo menos cerca de 4 mm2, com mais preferência maior que pelo menos cerca de 5 mm2, e com a máxima preferência maior que pelo menos cerca de 10 mm2.The bristle profile (i.e. the profile of the cleaning ends or free ends of the bristles as seen from a side elevation view) of a toothbrush formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is configured to provide interdental cleaning. higher. The individual bristles used to achieve the bristle tuft profile of the invention may generally be of circular cross section, with individual bristle diameters ranging from about 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) to about 0.4 mm (0.014 inch). ). However, other bristle cross-section shapes such as oval, square, rectangular, hexagonal, plus sign, star, etc. are also contemplated. Bristles are typically made of synthetic fibers such as nylon 6.12. The cleaning free ends of the bristles may be formed in any desired manner, such as straight, rounded, tapered, or contoured cut. It will be understood that the individual bristles need not be identical to each other. For example, bristles of different diameters or cross-sectional shapes may be provided on a toothbrush head 112 of a toothbrush 100 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. Typical standard or medium bristle tufts, composed of a plurality of bristles, are approximately 1.6 mm (0.063 inch) in diameter, with a cross-sectional area of approximately 2 mm2 (0.079 inch2). Larger tufts are commonly provided as front tufts at the distal end of a toothbrush head (or rear tufts at the proximal end of a toothbrush head, closer to the handle), and can be found elsewhere along of a toothbrush head to provide a more vigorous cleaning ability than standard bristles with fewer bristles. According to one aspect of the present invention, at least one of such a large tuft has a brushing surface area (surface area occupied by brushing or end of bristles) larger than a typical or standard toothbrush bristle tuft. it is contoured to form a large contoured tuft 120 having a raised section configured for the interdental surfaces of the teeth. A large contoured tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is larger in area than the average toothbrush tufts known in the art. Medium tufts have a cross-sectional area of about 2 mm2. The contoured tufts of the present invention have a cross-sectional area preferably greater than at least about 4 mm2, more preferably greater than at least about 5 mm2, and most preferably greater than at least about 10 mm2.
Because the contoured large tuft 120 has a larger brushing surface area than that provided by standard or medium bristle tufts, the contoured large tuft 120 has more bristles than commonly supplied in a standard bristle tuft and therefore does not flex as much. readily or as much as a bristle tuft having a standard surface area formed of bristles of the same diameter as the contoured large tuft 120. Accordingly, the contoured large tuft bristles 120 have the hardness, stiffness, and cleaning efficiency of a bristle. larger tuft because of the lateral reinforcement provided by the bristles that make up the contoured large tuft 120, while allowing for a more targeted cleaning action than is currently allowed by larger tufts. Contoured large tuft 120 is contoured to have at least one raised section 122 of bristles having heights extending above the remaining bristle heights in the lower section 124 of contoured large tuft 120. A sufficient number of raised section bristles 122 have brushing ends that are not laterally supported by other shorter contoured large tuft bristles 120 and extend above the heights of the other bristles in the contoured large tuft 120 to reach interdental spaces and efficiently clean interdental surfaces of the tooth. Consequently, the high section bristles 122 have the flexibility and interdental reach of a tuft of smaller bristles. However, because the high section bristles 122 are laterally supported by other contoured large tufted bristles 120 at the level near the surface of the head 112 (i.e., in the region lower than or adjacent to the bristle bases), the lateral displacement is still lower. , on average, than what might occur if such a raised section were an independently formed interdental tuff.
As will be appreciated, a large contoured tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention can brush around the tooth to reach interproximal areas (by means of the raised section 122) while also simultaneously polishing the external surfaces of the tooth (by means of lower section 124). For purposes of the present invention, the raised section 122 of a contoured large tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is a section which has free cleaning ends extending above other bristles of that tuft. For all purposes of the present invention, a lower section 124 of the contoured large tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is a section which has clean free ends below the clean free ends of other bristles in that tuft. Because the contoured large tuft 120 may include bristles of varying heights (all bristles are not necessarily taller or shorter, but may have a height between that of the highest bristles and the lowest bristles), the lowest section may also be called the base section.
According to one aspect of the present invention, the cross-sectional cleaning area provided by the raised section 122 of the contoured large tuft 120 is sufficient to achieve the desired cleaning, particularly interdental cleaning. Preferably, a raised section 122 having a brushing surface area of at least about 0.25 mm 2 is believed to provide the desired interdental cleaning. Preferably, raised section 122 has a brushing surface area of less than about 4 mm 2. It has been shown that a raised section 122 with a brushing surface area of 1.5 mm2 provides the desired optimal cleaning efficiency.
According to another aspect of the present invention, which may or may not be combined with the above aspects, more than one raised section 122 is provided within the contoured large tuft 120. For raised sections 122 to have the desired interdental cleaning capability, the raised sections 122 are preferably spaced apart by bristles in the lower section 124. More particularly, the clean-free ends of the raised sections 122 are preferably spatially isolated from each other so that each section 122 can function. independently of the other raised sections 122. Preferably, a sufficient number of lower bristles is provided between the raised sections to allow the separate raised sections to act independently. Alternatively, or in addition, the spacing between the independent and separate raised sections 122 may be determined by the brushing surface area provided between the independent and separate raised sections 122. Optionally, the number or lower bristle surface area provided between the sections Independent and separate raised sections 122 is also selected to allow the lower bristles to effectively clean the outer surfaces of a tooth while the raised sections clean the interdental surfaces. Preferably, the raised sections are spaced from each other by at least 0.2 mm, and preferably at least 0.5 mm. It will be understood that the lower section 124 may have regions that are isolated from each other so that the lower section 124 may also be described as having one or more sections. However, for simplicity, reference is made only to a "lower section" with the understanding that such reference includes a single interconnected group of lower bristles as well as two or more isolated sections of lower bristles.
Turning now to Figures 4 and 5, an exemplary contoured large tuft 220 of Figures 1 to 3 will be described in further detail to further illustrate various principles of the present invention. As can be seen from the side elevational schematic view of Figure 4, the bristles in the raised section 222 (shown schematically and not as an accurate representation) have wiping free ends 223 extending above the wiping free ends 225 of the bristles in lower section 224. More particularly, although not all the cleaning free ends 223 of raised section 222 are at the same height, all cleaning free ends 223 are nonetheless higher than the cleaning free ends 225 of lower section 224. It will be understood that although the cleaning free ends 223 of raised section 222 are not all at the same level or height, and taper inward and downward, it is within the scope of the present invention to have all cleaning free ends 223 at the same level. level or height. Similarly, it will be understood that although the cleaning free ends 225 of the lower section 224 are shown not to be at the same level or height (but are all lower than the lower cleaning free end 224 of the elevated section 222), thus forming a profile. substantially inward and downwardly tapering, it is within the scope of the present invention to have wiping free ends 225 of the lower section at the same levels or heights.
As can be seen from the schematic plan view of FIG. 5 (wherein the bristles are shown schematically rather than as an accurate representation), the exemplary contoured large tuft 220 has an occupied area (brushing surface area format as seen above). from a plan view) with an overall format of "X" or "+" (hereinafter "cross-shaped" for convenience, without limitation). As can be understood at least with reference to Figure 3, the free ends of the arms or legs or branches 230 need not be square, but instead may be rounded. The bristles that make up the branches 230 of the cross-shaped occupied area form the raised section 222 of contoured large tuft 220, while the bristles that make up the central region 232 from which the branches 230 extend forming the lower section 224 of the large contoured tuft 220. As can be understood, raised sections 222 are partially separated by gap regions 234 where no bristle is provided. As such, raised sections 222 are isolated from each other by gap regions 234 to allow each raised section 222 to function independently of the other raised sections 222 to achieve the desired interdental cleaning function. The presence of the lower section 224 adjacent to each of the raised sections 222 gives the desired support and / or stiffness for each of the raised sections 222 to improve the cleaning efficiency of each of the raised sections 222.
Naturally, instead of having gap regions 234 where no bristle is provided, shorter bristles may be provided in the areas indicated in Figure 5 of the gap regions, such as to form a substantially square footprint, as in the exemplary schematic embodiment of the invention. Figure 6. The corners of a square-shaped occupied area may be rounded, as would be formed from the exemplary embodiment of Figure 5, or more square, as shown in Figure 6. Like the contoured large tuft 220 of Figures 4 and 5, a contoured large tuft 320 with a square occupied area, as shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 6, has higher bristles (relative to the other bristles that make up the contoured large tuft 320) forming raised sections 322 preferably at least in the corner regions. , and lower bristles (relative to other bristles that make up the contoured large tuft 320) forming the lower section 324 between the sections 322 (and optionally also in a central region 334). In accordance with the principles of the present invention, raised sections 322 are preferably provided separate and independent from each other, to be substantially spatially isolated from each other and to function independently of one another. Raised sections 322 may form a tuft profile along line AA as the contoured large tuft profile 220 as shown in Figure 4, or any other desired profile, preferably achieving effective cleaning in accordance with the principles of the present invention. . The footprint of each of the raised sections 322 may be square or of any other desired shape within the substantially square footprint of the contoured large tuft 320. The bristles of one or more raised sections 322 may be of different heights ( forming a tapered profile) or they can all be the same height.
It will be appreciated that a contoured large tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention may have other occupied area formats than the "X" or "+" format of the exemplary contoured large tuft 120 of Figures 3 and 5. For example, It may be said that the exemplary contoured large tuft 220 has four branches 230. In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a contoured large tuft may be formed with less than or more than four contoured large tuft branches 220. If formed with less than In two branches, the contoured large tuft 220 may be said to have an elongated occupied area, either in the form of a substantially straight line (to form a bar-like occupied area shape) or a curved line (such as an arcuate or sinusoidal line). curve). Two or more of the raised sections with any desired footprint may be provided along the length of such footprint, preferably separated from each other by at least one lower section.
A large contoured branch tuft may be formed with branch numbers other than those described above. In accordance with the principles of the present invention, exemplary large contoured tufts 420a, 420b, and 420c of Figures 7a 9, respectively, each have only three branches 430 (e.g., a "trilobal" footprint). Branches 430 of the embodiments schematically illustrated in Figures 7 to 9 are shown spaced equidistantly from each other and substantially the same length, it will be understood that variations in branch spacing and length 430 are within the scope of the present invention. the raised sections are formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention with any desired occupied area shape along at least a portion or all of one or more of the contoured large tuft branches 430 420a, 420b, 420c, and preferably, separated by lower sections 424. Variations in the locations and shapes of the elevated sections are illustrated. For example, an exemplary contoured large tuft 420a of FIG. 7 has circular raised sections 422a larger and closer to the center of the contoured large tuft 420a than the circular raised sections 422b in the exemplary contoured large tuft 420b. In contrast, the raised sections 422c in the contoured large tuft 420c of Figure 9 occupy the tip area of each of the branches 430 and therefore do not have a circular occupied area shape. Also, an elevated section may be provided in the central region (preferably spaced from other elevated sections 422b), such as the central elevated section 434b of the contoured large tuft 420b of Figure 8. Lower sections 424 preferably form the remaining region of the large contoured tufts 420a, 420b, 420c, preferably spacing the raised sections from each other.
In the exemplary embodiments shown schematically in Figures 10 to 12, the respective large contoured tufts exemplary 520a, 520b, 520c are formed with more than four branches 530, as to form a substantially asterisk (*) occupied area pattern. Although branches 530 of the embodiments of figures 10 to 12 are shown spaced equidistant from each other and of substantially equal lengths, it will be understood that variations in branch spacing and length 530 are within the scope of the present invention. Preferably, raised sections are formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention with any desired occupied area along at least a portion or all of one or more of the contoured large tuft branches 530 520a 520b, 520c, and are preferably , separated by lower sections 524. Variations in the locations and shapes of high section are illustrated in the exemplary embodiments of figures 10 to 12. For example, an exemplary contoured large tuft 520a of figures 10 and 11 has raised sections 522a and 522b, respectively, in tips of each branch 530, each raised section 522a, 522b having a substantially rectangular footprint format. In an exemplary contoured large tuft 520b of FIG. 11, an additional central raised section 534b is provided in the central contoured large tuft region 520b, preferably spaced relative to other raised sections 522b. In contrast, raised sections 522c of a contoured large tuft 520c of Figure 12 occupy substantially the entire occupied area of each of the branches 530, with the lower section 524 formed only in the contoured large tuft central region 534c. Lower sections 524 preferably form the remaining region of contoured large tufts 520a, 520b, 520c, preferably spacing the raised sections from each other.
Como previamente descrito para tufos grandes contornados exemplificadores, os tufos grandes contornados 620a e 620b de figuras 13 e 14 têm cerdas mais altas ou elevadas (em relação a outras cerdas que compõem o tufo grande contornado 620a, 620b) formando seções elevadas 622a e 622b, e cerdas mais curtas (em relação a outras cerdas que compõem o tufo grande contornado 620a, 620b) formando seções inferiores 624, como ilustrado nas figuras 12 e 13.Therefore, as will be understood, the occupied area shape of a contoured large tuft as well as the individual raised sections of such a contoured large tuft formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention may be of any desired shape (e.g. rectangular, oval , star shape, ring shape, etc.) which achieves the desired effective cleaning and preferably in particular simultaneous interdental cleaning as well as cleaning of the external surface of the tooth. For example, a large contoured tuft according to the principles of the present invention may have a substantially circular occupied area shape, such as exemplary contoured large tufts 620a, 620b shown schematically in Figures 13 and 14, respectively. As previously described for exemplary contoured large tufts, contoured large tufts 620a and 620b of figures 13 and 14 have higher or higher bristles (relative to other bristles that make up contoured large tuft 620a, 620b) forming raised sections 622a and 622b, and shorter bristles (relative to other bristles making up the contoured large tuft 620a, 620b) forming lower sections 624, as illustrated in figures 12 and 13.
Each raised section 622a, 622b may have any desired occupied area shape (the raised sections of a given contoured large tuft having the same occupied area shape or each having a different occupied area shape), the ovoid shape illustrated in figures 13 and 14 being merely exemplary and not mandatory. The raised sections 622a or 622b may be equidistant from each other, as in the exemplary embodiments of figures 13 and 14, or in any other desired spacing. However, as discussed above, it will be understood that raised sections 622a and 622b are preferably spaced apart at least by lower section 624 to be substantially spatially isolated from each other. Raised sections 622a and 622b are illustrated as being provided along the outer periphery of exemplary contoured large tufts 620a and 620b. However, raised sections may be provided inside the outer periphery additionally or alternatively. In the exemplary contoured large tuft 620b shown schematically in Figure 14, a central raised section 634b is provided in a central region of the contoured large tuft 620.
In accordance with the principles of the present invention, it is desirable that the raised sections 122, 222, 322, 422a, 422b, 422c, 522a, 522b, 522c, 622a, and 622b (for simplicity, will be made hereinafter in this document refers only to raised section 122 with the understanding that similar principles or descriptions may apply to other raised sections of other embodiments) are sufficiently raised above respective lower sections 124, 224, 324, 424, 424, 424, 524, 524, 524, 624, 624, 624 (hereinafter, reference will be made here only to lower section 124 with the understanding that similar principles or descriptions may apply to other lower sections of other embodiments) to differentiate these two sections functionally from each other giving these two functional capabilities. The portions of the raised section bristles 122 extending above the clean free ends of the lower section 124 are preferably long enough to adequately reach the interdental spaces between the teeth while (and preferably at the same time) the ends. Clean bristles of the lower section 124 reach the outer surfaces of the teeth. In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a sufficient brushing surface area is provided by a raised section 122 extending sufficiently above the surrounding bristles of the contoured large tuft 120 to reach within the interdental spaces and clean the interdental surfaces. The highest bristle in at least one of the raised sections 122 of a contoured large tuft 120 formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention is preferably at least about 0.5 mm higher and no more than about 4 mm. higher, and more preferably at least about 1 or 2 mm higher, and most preferably about 1.8 mm higher than the lowest group of bristles in the lower section 124 of that contoured large tuft 120.
As can be understood from the above descriptions of exemplary contoured large tufts formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention, the height of the bristles in the raised sections of the contoured large tuft is not necessarily the same height. Instead, one or more of the raised sections may have a tapered profile. Such a bottleneck may occur in any desired direction, such as to achieve a particular functional effect. The tuft profile of the contoured large tuft sections formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention can be selected to increase the number of bristles that come into contact with the user's teeth at the same time. For example, the tuft profile of at least the raised section may be curved such that when the bristles of an elevated section reach the teeth interdentally, the tapering of the elevated section allows the bristles to simultaneously contact the curved dental surface. . In other words, although the brush head 112 is generally not the same distance from one point on a dental surface to another point on a dental surface, the different lengths of bristles compensate for such variable distances between the brush head 112 and points at along the dental surfaces. More than one taper, in different directions, can be provided to increase the bristle-free cleaning tip contact with teeth during cleaning, regardless of brushing direction. For example, as can be seen from Figure 3, the contoured large tuft 120 has a tapered raised section 122 tapering from the outer periphery downward to the more central lower section 124. Tapering can also occur side by side (e.g. circumferential mode around the periphery of the outlined large tuft). Preferably, the taper angle of a given raised section 122 is at least about 20 degrees from the horizontal (as with respect to the head surface 112) and more preferably at least about 27 degrees. The taper angle of a given raised section 122 is preferably less than about 70 degrees, more preferably less than about 50 degrees, and most preferably less than about 45 degrees. If desired, the bristles in the lower section 124 need not all be the same height. Some tapering of the bristles in the lower section 124, such as a taper of approximately at least about 10 degrees and preferably no greater than about 40 degrees, and preferably about 20 degrees, is within the scope of the present invention. A substantially continuous contour or inward and downward tapering may be presented, long enough for the brushing surface area to extend high enough above other contoured large tuft bristles 120 to reach into the interdental spaces and clean the interdental surfaces of the tooth.
According to a separate and independent aspect of the present invention, a plurality of bristle tufts may be formed for each tuft to have a contoured profile, with the various contoured bristle tufts being at different heights from one another. Such tufts may be of standard cross-sectional area. Bristle tufts may be contoured in any desired manner to achieve a desired cleaning effect or effectiveness. For example, the bristles in a given tuft of bristles may be of different heights to form a substantially conical or frusto-conical profile, facilitating interdental cleaning. Bristles in other tufts of bristles may be of different heights to form a concave profile that can better adapt to the convex and lingual buccal dental surfaces. The difference in heights of the various contoured bristle tufts can be selected to achieve a desired cleaning effect or effectiveness. For example, longer or higher tufts are desirable for interdental cleaning, while shorter or shorter tufts are desirable for cleaning external dental surfaces, particularly buccal and lingual dental surfaces. The differences in heights between such contoured bristle tufts can be measured, for example, by comparing the highest bristles of the contoured bristle tufts. The height difference between the contoured bristle tufts of varying heights 140 may be at least about 1.5 mm and preferably about 1 mm. Contoured bristle tufts of varying heights 140 may be arranged within a central region of the brushing surface area or occupied area of the toothbrush head 110, as illustrated in the exemplary toothbrush heads of figures 3 and 8. Preferably , contoured bristle tufts of varying heights 140 are provided in an intermediate region positioned at the center 70% to 90% of the brush head 110, spaced from the distal end (where a raised section known as a front tuft may be provided) or proximal end (where a raised section known as the rear tuft may be provided). Such an arrangement allows contoured bristle tufts to clean the outer surfaces of the teeth during typical or normal use of toothbrush 100, in contrast to the more limited typical use of contoured bristles of different heights provided at the distal end of a head. Toothbrush (as in place of a front tuft) to clean the back of the teeth in the front area of the user's mouth.
The exemplary embodiment of Figures 3 and 15 illustrates an arrangement of variable height contoured bristle tufts 140 in which the height of the contoured bristle tufts grows toward the center or midline M of the toothbrush head 110 (which is substantially equidistant from the sides of the head), and the arrangement has a substantially side elevating sawtooth profile (as can be understood with reference to FIG. 2).
According to yet another aspect of the present invention, the variable height contoured bristle tufts 140 may be interspersed with different contoured bristles or have no contour (i.e. the clean-free ends being of substantially equal height). , and / or the bristle tufts with different brushing surface areas, such as a large tuft (such as a large contoured tuft 120). It will be appreciated that the bristle tuft arrangement of figures 2, 3, and 15 is exemplary and various other bristle tuft arrangements and bristle profiles may be formed in accordance with the principles of the present invention to achieve the improved effectiveness provided by the invention. application of the principles of the present invention.

ExemplosExamples
Three toothbrushes were built. A first toothbrush was constructed with three cross-shaped tufts as set forth in Figure 3, with all bristles at substantially the same height (9.2 mm). A second toothbrush was constructed with three cross-shaped tufts in the same configuration and bristle density as in the first brush, with raised bristle sections and lower bristle sections having a height difference of 1.2 mm (9, 2 mm, 8.0 mm). A third toothbrush was constructed with tufts as shown in figures 1 to 3, but without gum massagers. A front tuft and frusto-conical bristles and a cross tuft produced a general pattern, with inverted "V" repetition. A fourth toothbrush was constructed with frusto-conical tufts and a front tuft as shown in Figures 1 to 3 and 15, but without the gum massagers or the large cross-shaped tufts.
A tabela abaixo resume os resultados:A simulated plaque was applied to a human jaw model in the area between the teeth. Three hundred grams of force was applied to each head to push the bristles against the teeth, and the toothbrush was moved back and forth by a machine for eight seconds to simulate brushing. The amount of simulated plaque left behind was then evaluated and compared to a control to determine how much was removed based on the toothbrush design. The table below summarizes the results:
