O núcleo e a camada são formados integralmente, e a camada é coextensiva com uma superfície externa do núcleo. Em uma modalidade, o compósito inclui camadas em oposição às superfícies do núcleo que faceiam para fora. O núcleo inclui uma matriz fibrosa e material absorvente. A matriz fibrosa define vazios e passagens entre os vazios, que são distribuídas na totalidade do compósito. O material absorvente é localizado dentro de alguns dos vazios.
