Crystalline calcium carbonate can be calcite which has been specially modified for a rhombohedral crystal structure with indices {1,1, -1,1}. The crystalline calcium carbide of the present invention is extremely inexpensive because it can be easily supplied from inexpensive naturally occurring calcite, and it performs well even when used on large medium particle sizes.
