The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a single layered polyethylene film that shrinks to heat, with a thickness variation of less than 20%, preferably less than 18% and even more preferably less than 15%, the process of which comprises extrusion of the film resin through a flat matrix, rapid cooling of the molten extruded sheet, irradiation of the same, reheating to an appropriately selected orientation temperature and stretching of the irradiated sheet. Preferably, the polyethylene comprises a copolymer of ethylene- <244> -olefin. also claimed is the irradiated single layer polyethylene film which shrinks to heat, with a thickness variation of less than 20%, preferably less than 18% and even more preferably less than 15%.
