Abstract

An electrical discharge lamp (1) contains a light rod (8) supported at its opposite ends by a terminal connection (9) and a retainer (35). The retainer (35) is a push fit inside a well (22) of triangular cross-section whose three corners respectively receive three springy members (37, 38, 39) provided on the retainer to fix its angular position and thus the angular position of a traverse wire (36) electrically connecting the end of the rod (8) remote from the connection (9) to the connection. The connection is provided with two concentrically arranged sleeves (14) 15) of which the outermost sleeve is externally screw threaded and can be stiffly rotated without axial movement with respect to the inner sleeve in order to allow the lamp envelope to be turned to a desired angular position without interrupting the electrical and mechanical connection between the lamp and a lamp socket into which the terminal connection is screwed.
