<EMI ID=1.1>

Referring to the drawings and first of all to Figures 1 to 7 thereof, there is shown the tip of a welding tool according to the invention, indicated generally by the reference notation 1, to be used with a gas powered soldering iron. Soldering iron is not shown, this iron is well known to specialists. It may be, for example, a portable soldering iron in which a fuel gas tank would be provided in the handle of the tool or, alternatively, it may be a welding tool which would be supplied by gas supplied from a remote mounted cylinder or from any other suitable source.
The tip 1 comprises a body 2 of nickel-plated brass, which comprises a portion of welding tip 3, massive, for melting and working the weld, and a cylindrical body 4 extending from the massive tip 3. The hollow body 4 forms a chamber 6 for housing a heating element 5, also according to the invention. In this case, the heating element comprises a support for the catalytic combustion of gas, 7, mounted on a support member 8 of nickel-plated brass. The support 7 of the catalytic combustion consists of a permeable material, in this case quartz wool plated with platinum.
The support member 8 comprises a base 9 of circular section, with a pair of elongate support elements 10, spaced from one another, which extend from the base 9. The elements 10 end in a unique item
11 which engages in a bore 12 made in the solid tip part 3 under heat conduction conditions, to conduct the heat of the support member 8, and in particular of the spaced elements 10, in the solid tip 3 The catalytic combustion support 7 is wound around the elements 10 separated from one another and
the elements 10 separated from one another define between them a gas outlet orifice 13 which supplies gas to the catalytic combustion support 7. A bore 14 in the base 9 forms a gas inlet orifice which discharges gas between the separated elements 10. A flange 15 extends around the base 9 and comes into contact with the hollow body 4 to close the chamber 6. The support member 8 is formed from a solid bar of circular section . The hole 14 is made in the base up to the end of the separated elements, at 20. The various diameters of the support are then formed by turning. Part of the base material is then removed on each side of the element to reveal the hole 14 and to form the two elements 10 spaced from each other.
Several slots 17 form exhaust orifices for the burnt gases which escape through the hollow body 4. A retaining means, provided in the present case by a cylindrical element 18 made of metallic fabric, is provided around the support 7 of the catalytic combustion, in the chamber 6, to hold in place around the support member, the support 7 of the catalytic combustion of the gas.
An annular recess 19 is provided around the base 9 to receive a part set with a tubular element
(not shown) which can be connected to the base 9 to supply gas to the support member 8. In general, the tubular element (not shown) would extend from a handle (not shown) of the iron solder. During use, the gas is supplied through the bore 14 of the base 9 and then between the spaced apart elements 10, in the support 7 for the catalytic combustion of the gas. At the start, the gas passes through the support 7 of the catalytic combustion and passes through the exhaust orifices 17. The gas is ignited by a flame, by a spark or by any other suitable means and, while the flame burns in the slot, the catalytic combustion support is brought to the ignition temperature.
When it reaches the ignition temperature, the support 7 of the catalytic combustion turns red and
the flame goes out. The heat from support 7 of
the catalytic combustion is conducted, through the support member 8, at the point to be welded 3 and some heat is also conducted at the point 3 by the hollow part 4. However, it is believed that most of the heat is driven by the support member 8.
It has been found that this welding tool tip has many advantages over the tips known so far. A particular advantage is that the tip yield has been found to increase considerably with use. It is believed that this is achieved by the construction of the support member. Due to the fact that the two elements separated from one another form a gas outlet orifice which supplies gas to the support of the catalytic combustion and, furthermore, due to the arrangement of the elements separated one from the other, a large area of the catalytic combustion support is exposed directly to the gas and a more even distribution of the gas can be obtained
through the support of catalytic combustion. This is believed to lead to improved combustion efficiency and thus the use of less gas for a given heat rate. In addition, due to the fact that the support member engages in the massive tip under conditions of heat combustion, heat transfer to the tip, considerably improved, is obtained.
This is because the support member is heated by the support for the catalytic combustion of the gas and the heat is thus transferred directly to the tip. In addition, because the support member is not exposed directly to ambient air, there is no heat loss in the support member due to convection.
It has also been found that the wastage rate of unburnt gas has been reduced considerably by the present invention. It is again believed that this is a consequence of the fact that a greater extent of the support of the catalytic combustion is exposed to the gas and thus a greater combustion efficiency is obtained. As seen in Figure 3, when the support of the catalytic combustion is wrapped around the elements spaced from each other, the support of the catalytic combustion only touches the two outer edges of these elements and, consequently , the remaining part of the organ is exposed to gas.
This is so because the combustion support, when rolled up, has a substantially circular cross-section and the gas leaving the gap between the two elements separated from each other, fills the defined volume. by the support of the combustion and by the two elements on each side, thus exposing to the gas a much greater extent of the support of the catalytic combustion than in the devices known up to now. Another advantage of the invention is that it has been found that a considerable reduction in the back pressure in the gas has been obtained. Specialists will understand, it goes without saying, that a considerable advantage over the supports known up to now lies in the relative simplicity and in the ease of manufacture of the device.
Yet another advantage of the invention is that
has found that an improvement in the gas / air ratio can be obtained and that, in addition, a considerable improvement in ignition efficiency has been obtained. It has been found that when a support member according to the invention is used,
ignition can be achieved with a much lower gas setting. It goes without saying that this reduces the gas consumption of the device.
Referring now to Figures 8 and 9, there is shown a heating device, also according to the invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 30, for heating any heating appliance. ge supplied with gas. For example, the heater 30 can be used to heat the base plate of a gas-fired iron, or it could be attached to the body of a glue gun to heat the body, or alternatively to any other device. The heating device comprises a body 32 of nickel-plated brass, comprising a solid part 33 and a hollow part 34. The solid part 33 has a flat face 35 with tapped holes 36 to receive screws (not shown) or members analogs for fixing the face 35 to
the part of the appliance to be heated, such as for example
the hot plate of an iron. The hollow part 34 defines a chamber 37 for receiving a heating element 38 supplied with gas, according to the invention, and which is substantially similar to the heating element 5, which has just been described, in the tip of the welding tool, referring to Figures 1 to 7. Similar reference notations are used to identify the heating element 38. The only difference between this heating element and that described for the tip of the welding tool is that the retaining means, instead of being a metallic canvas, is constituted in the present case by a spring 39 wound around the support 7 of the catalytic combustion of the gas. The flange 15 closes the chamber 37 in the same way as the chamber 6 of the tip of the welding tool was closed.
Gas exhaust slots 31 are provided in the hollow part 34. The operation of this device is similar to the operation of the tip 1 of the welding tool, which has just been described.
Referring now to Figures 10 and 11, we
there is shown a bonding gun, also according to the invention, generally designated by the notation of
<EMI ID = 1.1>
41 of aluminum alloy, with a bore 43 of circular cross section, to receive a stick of glue 44. A nozzle 45 with a bore 46 extends from the body
41 to dispense the heated and melted glue. A flexible closing member, with bellows, 47, constituted by an organ of the accordion type 48, is mounted at the end of the body 41 to adapt above the glue stick 44 to prevent melted glue from s 'escapes from the bore 43. The adhesive is dispensed through the nozzle 45 by pressing on the adhesive stick 44 and the bellows member 47 in the direction of the arrow X. An opening 51 is provided in the end of the bellows member 47 for receiving the glue stick 440
A part 52 of the body 41 extends to form a heating device for heating the bonding gun. The part 52 ends with a hollow part 53 which forms a chamber 54 to receive a heating element 55 supplied by the gas, similar to the heating element 5 shown and described with reference to the tip of the welding tool in the figures. 1 to 7, and similar elements are identified by the same reference notations. As this heating element 55 is similar to the heating element 5 of the tip of the welding tool, it will not be described further. Exhaust slots 56 are provided in
the hollow part 53. As can be seen, the single element 11 of the support member 8 penetrates into a bore 57 of the solid part 52 of the body 41, under conditions of thermal conductivity, to transfer heat to the body 41 to melt the glue. In this embodiment of the invention, a tube 58 supplies gas to the support member 8 and, as can be seen, the tube 58 is crimped around the annular recesses 19. A nut
59 on the tube 58 fixes the tube to a suitable means for supplying gas, for example to a handle or the like, comprising control means for controlling the pressure and the flow of gas, and which may also include a reservoir for the gas .
The advantages of a heating device as described with reference to FIGS. 8 and 9 and for the bonding gun of FIGS. 10 and 11 are numerous and substantially similar to the advantages obtained with the tip of the welding tool.
It will be understood that although the heating element and
the heating device according to the invention have been described for use with certain devices and in certain applications, they could be used for all other devices and devices, as required. Furthermore, it will be understood that while the tip of the welding tool has been described as having a particular shape and construction, many other shapes and constructions could be used without departing from the scope of the invention. In addition, it will be understood that although the support member has been described as comprising two elements spaced apart from one another, any number of elements spaced from each other could be provided, without going beyond the ambit of the invention.
It will also be understood that it is not necessary for the support member to extend from a base and that it is not necessary for the elements spaced from one another to end with an element unique; if desired, they could end individually in the massive part of the point. It goes without saying that, in any of the other embodiments of the invention, the support member could be produced using any number of elements spaced from one another and these could end individually in the massive body. Of course, in any case, we could dispense with the basics.
It will be understood that other shapes and constructions of the support member could be used without departing from the scope of the invention. Furthermore, in the case
of a gluing gun, it is envisaged in certain cases that the support member, instead of being constituted by a pair of elements spaced from one another, could be produced by an elongated tubular element which may have a or several gas outlet ports for supplying gas to the support for catalytic combustion.
It will also be understood, of course, that, although in all cases, the solid body has been described as extending above the support member and the support of the catalytic combustion to form a chamber for receiving the support member and support for catalytic combustion, this is not necessary. All that is required is for the support member to come into contact with the solid body under conditions allowing the transfer of heat.
In addition, although a particular type of support for catalytic combustion of gas has been described, which is permeable, any other support for catalytic combustion which is permeable could be used. It will also be understood, of course, that the support need not be
catalytic combustion is retained against the support member by any means. If desired, the restraint could be dispensed with entirely. In fact, when using a retaining means, any other suitable retaining means can be used instead of a spring or wire mesh.
It will also be understood, of course, that when several exhaust gas outlet ports are provided, only one is sufficient. In fact, in some cases, it is contemplated that the outlet may be provided
at either end of the chamber rather than in the side walls. For example, the outlet orifice could be provided in the flange extending between the support member and the hollow body. It goes without saying that the exhaust gas outlet orifices could be of any suitable shape or construction; for example, in some cases it is contemplated that a single outlet may be provided, which could be in the form of a helical slot extending over the surface of the hollow cylindrical portion.
It will also be understood, of course, that it is not necessary for the support of the catalytic combustion to extend entirely around the support member. It will also be understood that it is not necessary for the base to come into contact with the hollow part of the body.
It goes without saying that the support member and the body of the various devices, including the tip of the welding tool that has just been described, have been made of particular materials. They could be made of any other material suitable for driving
the heat. It will also be understood that the support member can be manufactured using other manufacturing techniques than turning or grinding. In fact, in some cases, it is contemplated that they can be molded.
