<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
300 parties d'eau.

<EMI ID=12.1>

The present invention relates to pre-expanded particles of a low density, linear, particular polyethylene (which will be called hereinafter "LDPE-L") suitable for expansion in a mold capable of be closed but not capable of being sealed by heating under the effect of a heating agent, such as water vapor, as well as a process for manufacturing these particles.
As a method of manufacturing pre-expanded particles of a polyolefin, intended to undergo expansion in a mold, a method is generally implemented comprising a step of heating the polyolefin particles containing a volatile blowing agent with, for example, steam. of water. However, when the polyolefin particles are polyethylene particles, it is necessary to use a crosslinked polyethylene resin, because, if the polyethylene is not crosslinked, the melt viscosity of the polyethylene resin undergoes a considerable fall at a temperature close to the melting point of the resin and it is therefore extremely difficult to obtain pre-expanded particles which have
experienced a slight contraction or weak withdrawal, everything
by having a high pre-expansion ratio. For the manufacture of a crosslinked olyethylene resin, we do
a large call for a process operating at high pressure,
low density polyethylene as a starting material, because using the process operating under high pressure, the low density polyethylene can be perfectly and properly crosslinked. Pre-expanded particles obtained by carrying out the process operating under high pressure and with low density polyethylene, are superior by their suppleness or flexibility and their buffability or cushioning property. However, the pre-expanded particles are inferior in their resistance to
heat and leave something to be desired by their solidity. Therefore, only pre-expanded particles can be used which have a relatively low pre-expansion ratio.
As a result of the studies carried out by the present applicant, intended to develop pre-expanded polyethylene particles which have improved heat resistance, excellent mechanical properties
and excellent molding properties and which are capable of generating a molded article with a high expansion ratio without reducing the good softness or flexibility
and good padding or padding property
conventional pre-expanded particles, prepared using low density, crosslinked, treated polyethylene
under high pressure, it was possible to prepare pre-expanded particles using a particular polyethylene and using a particular pre-expansion process,
so that the present invention was born.
A more particular subject of the present invention is therefore pre-expanded particles of LDPE-L, obtained by vapor phase copolymerization of ethylene and butene1 and having a melt index (IF) of 0.3 to 3.0 g / 10 min , a specific weight of 0.915 to 0.935 g / cm <3>, a melting point (PF) of 110 to 130 [deg.] C, a weight average molecular weight (Mp) of 5 x 10 to 20 x 10 and a ratio of the weight average molecular weight / molecular weight medium in nom-

expanded according to a process which comprises a step of dispersing the particles of the particular LDPE-L having the above-mentioned physical properties and of a volatile pore-forming agent in water, in the presence of a dispersing agent, in an autoclave, a step of heating the dispersion thus obtained to a temperature varying from-
<EMI ID = 2.1>
the blowing agent, and a step of releasing the dispersion in an atmosphere of a pressure lower than that which prevails in the autoclave, while maintaining constant
the pressure and the temperature in the autoclave, by the application of a pressure not less than the tension or vapor pressure of the blowing agent.
The pre-expanded particles of the particular LDPE-L have excellent heat resistance, good mechanical properties and good molding properties, as well as perfect softness or flexibility and good dabbing or cushioning property, and can generate an expanded molded article. having a high expansion ratio.
In accordance with the present invention, particular LDPE-L is used as the fundamental resin of the pre-expanded particles. The particular LDPE-L is prepared by vapor phase copolymerization of ethylene and butene-1 and it has an IF of 0.3 to 3.0 g / 10 min, a specific weight of 0.915 to 0.935 g / cm <3>, a PF from 110 to 130 [deg.] C, a
Mp from 5 x 104 to 20 x 104 and an Mp / Mn from 3 to 7.
When the IF is less than 0.3 g / 10 min, it is difficult to prepare the pre-expanded particles because
that the fluidity or flowability of the polymer is not good during the preparation of the pre-expanded particles. On the other hand, when the IF is greater than 3.0 g / 10 min, the fluidity of the polymer is very high and the pre-expanded particles obtained have a low pre-expansion ratio and tend to contract.
When the specific weight is less than 0.915 g / cm <3>, the polymer resin is so soft that the pre-expanded particles obtained tend to contract or shrink. On the other hand, when the specific weight is greater than 0.935 g / cm <3>, the foaming or expansion process in a mold is difficult to carry out.
When the PF is lower than 110 [deg.] C, the pre-expanded particles have an insufficient heat resistance. On the other hand, when the PF is higher than 130 [deg.] C, the polymer behaves like a polyethylene with high density and the process of expansion or foaming in a mold becomes difficult.
<EMI ID = 3.1>
polymer has a very high fluidity and cannot generate pre-expanded particles with a high expansion ratio. On the other hand, when the Mp is greater than
20 x 104, the polymer resin only very difficult to foam because the fluidity of the resin during the molding process is poor.
When the Mp / Mn is less than 3, the workability
polymer resin is reduced for the preparation of resin particles, the preparation of pre-expanded particles and the carrying out of a molding process. On the other hand, when the Mp / Mn is greater than 7, the polymer resin must be prepared using a special catalyst or by carrying out a particular polymerization process, due to low stability.
polymerization and, therefore, obtaining a polymer resin of unstable quality also.
The PF is a peak or peak temperature of an endothermic curve, measured by raising the temperature of a sample at a speed of 20 [deg.] C / min to 200 [deg.] C, by cooling it to the speed of 20 [deg.] C / min up to room temperature in order to cause its crystallization and by heating the sample at the speed of
10 [deg.] C / min with a differential scanning calorimeter
(CED). The specific gravity is measured in accordance with the process defined in standards ASTM-D-1505 and the IF is measured by implementing the process defined in standards JIS-K-
6760. The Mp and the Mn are measured by gel passage chromatography (CPG).
The particular LDPE-L having the above-mentioned physical properties is prepared by the vapor phase copolymerization of ethylene and butene-1. The particular LDPE-L may have a cellular structure suitable for expansion molding. When the butene-1 content of LDPE-L varies from approximately 0.5 to approximately 5 mol% (corres-
<EMI ID = 4.1>
has a specific weight which varies within the above mentioned range.
LDPE-L used for the purposes of the present invention can advantageously generate excellent pre-expanded particles and give an expanded molded article, even if it is not crosslinked. However, LDPE-L crosslinked by an organic peroxide or by irradiation with an electron beam can also be used without any disadvantage.
Likewise, as the occasion might require, additives can also be added, such as stabilizers against ultraviolet light, antistatic agents, stabilizers against heat, flame retardants or anti - fire, coloring agents and inorganic powders, with LDPE-L.
The process for manufacturing the aforementioned pre-expanded particles will be explained later in this memo.
The public is aware of a pre-expansion process in accordance with which an aqueous dispersion of particles of a polyolefin resin, impregnated with a volatile pore-forming agent, are released from an atmosphere at high temperature and at high pressure, in an atmosphere at low pressure ( FRG patent application unexamined n [deg.]
2,107,683 and Japanese patent application examined (Tokkyo Kokai) no [deg.] 1344/1981). However, it is very difficult to apply the conventional process to a process for manufacturing pre-expanded polyethylene particles, because of the three problems set out below.
The first problem is that the pre-expanded particles stick to each other (blockage) when a mixture of the polyethylene particles and water is released into an atmosphere at lower pressure, even if the pre-expanded particles have a ratio of high expansion, can be obtained.
The second problem resides in the fact that the pre-expansion ratios of the pre-expanded particles are not uniform when the particles are obtained by releasing the aqueous dispersion of the polyethylene particles in an atmosphere at lower pressure. Therefore, an expanded molded article, prepared using such pre-expanded particles, has no uniform weight, uniform physical properties and has a poor appearance, which reduces its commercial value.
The third problem, which is the most important, resides in the fact that during the implementation of the expansion process according to which a mold is loaded with pre-expanded particles and then heated, the expansion process is of a difficult to use when using the polyethylene usually used, such as high density polyethylene or low density polyethylene
(under high pressure), because the heating range to be applied during expansion is extremely narrow.
The particles are in particular not mutually fused in the case where the heating temperature is low and
the particles are contracted in case the heating temperature is high.
These problems of the conventional pre-expansion process
polyethylene particles can receive a solution using the aforementioned particular LDPE-L and releasing the aqueous dispersion of LDPE-L particles through an orifice having a small diameter, while regulating the pressure and the temperature in an autoclave.
With regard to the third problem, when using the pre-expanded particles of the particular LDPE-L, even
in the case of the expansion process in a mold, the range of heating temperatures to be applied during the expansion remains wide and the expansion process is easy and easy to carry out. Although the reason
has not yet been confirmed so far, it is assumed
that this is due to the fact that the range of temperatures in which LDPE-L is crystallized is as wide as observed, for example by CED and that the range of temperatures in which the pre-expanded particles are expanded to a maximum magnitude in a mold, is close to
the range of temperatures in which LDPE-L is crystallized (that is to say that the pre-expanded particles are mutually fused) and, moreover, that the cellular structure of the pre-expanded particles is advantageous for the expansion or foaming in mold .
Regarding the first problem posed by
bonding of the pre-expanded particles to each other
(blocking), such a problem can be solved by releasing the mixture of LDPE-L particles and water in a lower pressure atmosphere, through at least one orifice having a diameter 1.2 to 3 times larger than a sphere diameter calculated from the volume of LDPE-L particles.
In accordance with the process according to the invention, all the pre-expanded particles obtained are separated piece by piece.
The expression "a sphere diameter calculated from the volume of LDPE-L particles", as used in the present specification, designates a sphere diameter having the same volume as the volume of LDPE particles- L and we will refer to it, in the remainder of this document, under the name "a sphere diameter".
When the hole diameter is too small,
particles cannot pass through the orifice. On the other hand, when the diameter of the orifice is too large, several particles are simultaneously released into the atmosphere at lower pressure and, consequently, the particles are caused to agglomerate and to stick to each other at the moment where they pass through the orifice or when they undergo a subsequent expansion, and a blockage occurs.
The shape of the orifice is generally that of a circle or an ellipse and, if the occasion requires, one can also use an orifice of polygonal shape. The size of the orifice is determined from the diameter of the LDPE-L particles used. In the general case, where particles having a sphere diameter of approximately 0.5 to approximately 6 mm are used for usual expansion in a mold, the orifice has a surface of about 0.3 to
<EMI ID = 5.1>
tion is adjusted or controlled by varying the number of orifices, because the size of the orifices is determined by the diameter of the particles. The orifices can be produced, for example, by inserting a pressure-resistant plate with orifices, having minus an orifice behind a release valve provided with a flange.
In view of the second problem, that is to say the defect according to which the pre-expansion ratios of the pre-expanded particles are not uniform, a solution can be found to this by maintaining the temperature and the pressure in the autoclave, preferably a partial pressure of the blowing agent of the gas phase in the autoclave constant, when the aqueous dispersion of the LDPE-L particles is released into an atmosphere
at lower pressure.
The temperature preferably varies in the range of 5 ° C. during the release of the dispersion, because the pre-expansion ratio varies largely as a function of the change in temperature. The temperature can be easily adjusted, for example, using a shirt autoclave usually used.
The pressure in the autoclave decreases as the mixture of particles and water is released, because the upper space of the autoclave increases, so as to decrease the pre-expansion ratio of the particles released. Therefore, the pressure in the autoclave should be kept constant during
release of the aqueous dispersion of the particles. When continuing the release process for
a long period, the introduction of nitrogen gas or pressurized air into the autoclave is not very effective
to keep the pressure constant in the autoclave and, therefore, the pre-expansion ratio of the pre-expanded particles is greatly reduced, because the content of blowing agent in the PF.BD-L particles is decreased due to volatilization of the blowing agent from
particles, in proportion to the drop in pressure or partial tension of the blowing agent in the gas phase present in the autoclave. Consequently, most advantageously, the partial pressure of the blowing agent in the gas phase present in the autoclave, as also the total pressure which prevails in the autoclave, are kept constant during the release operation. Conservation or maintenance of the pressure is achieved, for example, by decreasing the volume of the upper space in the autoclave as the space increases, so as to maintain the volume of the constant upper space, or by introducing a volatile blowing agent into the autoclave from the outside, as the upper space increases.
However, the methods described above are only effective only when the upper space of the autoclave is not saturated with blowing agent vapor and the partial pressure of the blowing agent in the gas phase decreases during release of the dispersion. Consequently, when the upper space is saturated with the vapor of the blowing agent, for example, when an excess of blowing agent is present in liquid form in the autoclave, the introduction of additional blowing agent does not is not necessary.
We prefer the latter method to the method cited
in the first place, because the method mentioned in the first place is of a much more complicated implementation. The process mentioned in the last place can be carried out, for example, by introducing the liquid volatile blowing agent continuously or intermittently by an adjustment valve or valve, with adjustment of the proportion introduced to keep the total pressure in the vehicle constant. Therefore, the pre-expanded particles, the pre-expansion ratios of which are very close to each other, can be obtained even when the release operation continues for a long time.
The expression "maintain a constant pressure" as it is used in the present specification and the claims which terminate it, means to regulate, control and maintain the pressure in a range of pressures in which one obtains pre-expanded particles having a tolerable variation pre-expansion ratio.

read various volatile blowing agents having a boiling point which fluctuates from -50 to 120 [deg.] C. As examples of blowing agents, there may be mentioned, more particularly, aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, cyclopentane or cyclohexane; halogenated hydrocarbons such as monochloromethane, dichloromethane,
monochlorethane, trichloromonofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, dichloromonofluoromethane, trichlorotrifluorethene or dichlorotetrafluoroethane
and the like. The blowing agent can be used alone or
well, mixtures of blowing agents can be used. The proportion of volatile blowing agent used is decided according to its nature, the desired pre-expansion ratio of the pre-expanded particles obtained, the ratio of the volume of the polymer resin to the volume of the upper space.
in the autoclave. In general, the blowing agent is used in an amount of 5 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of LDPE-L particles.
The dispersing agent is advantageously used in a small amount at the time of dispersion of the LDPE-L particles in water, during the implementation of the process according to the present invention, in order to prevent agglomeration of the particles during heating. As examples of dispersing or dispersing agents, mention may be made, more particularly, of water-soluble polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol, methylcellulose
or N-polyvinylpyrrolidone; powders of water-insoluble inorganic compounds, such as calcium phosphate, magnesium pyrophosphate, zinc carbonate, titanium oxide or aluminum oxide and the like. Water-insoluble inorganic compounds are preferred over water-soluble polymers because the latter pose a problem of environmental pollution. However, when the inorganic powders are used in a large amount, the pre-expanded particles are not mutually well fused at the time of expansion in the mold.
In such a case, a small amount of an anionic surfactant or surfactant, such as a sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate, a sodium α-olefinesulfonate or a sodium alkylsulfonate, is preferably used together with the inorganic powder to decrease the amount of powder. The powder of the water-insoluble inorganic compound is used in a proportion of 0.1 to 3 parts by weight and the anionic surfactant is used in a proportion of 0.001 to 0.5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the LDPE-L.
In accordance with the present invention, the aqueous dispersion of the particular LDPE-L particles is heated to a temperature which varies between the ranges below:
<EMI ID = 7.1>
The temperature can be varied between the above temperature limits depending on the type of volatile blowing agent used and the desired pre-expansion ratio. For example, when using a LDPE-L with a PF of 120 [deg.] C, you choose a heating temperature in a range of 95 to 125 [deg.] C. When the heating temperature is below the above-mentioned temperature limits, the expansion ratio decreases sharply. On the other hand, when the heating temperature is higher than the range of temperatures defined above, the cells of the pre-expanded particles obtained are collapsed.
The pre-expanded particles thus obtained, having an internal pressure or tension substantially equal to atmospheric pressure, can be subjected to expansion in a mold which is capable of being closed but not capable of being sealed.
is advantageous for the purposes of the present invention. Obviously, the pre-expanded particles according to the present invention can also be used in an expansion process, for example a process in which an additional expansion capacity or aptitude is imparted to the pre-expanded particles obtained which are then introduced into a mold, the pre-expanded particles then being heated with a heating agent, such as water vapor, to a temperature varying from about 105 [deg.] C
<EMI ID = 8.1>
condes about 2 minutes, so as to obtain an expanded item.
A method intended to impart additional expansion capacity or aptitude to the pre-expanded particles can be used, for example, by introducing a gas, such as nitrogen gas or air, under pressure into the particle cells, in order to increase the internal pressure of the cells, or by subjecting the pre-expanded particles to a pressure using compressed air, in order to increase the pressure or internal tension of the cells. It is also effective to compress a mold loaded with the pre-expanded particles, with or without additional capacity or capacity for expansion.
The pre-expanded particles of the particular LDPE-L, prepared by implementing the particular process in accordance with the present invention, do not give rise to any blocking
and have a uniform expansion ratio and can be used in industry for the implementation of a conventional expansion molding process, the operation being carried out with great ease and ease, because 'They have a wide range of heating temperatures suitable for expansion or foaming in a mold. An expanded article produced from the pre-expanded particles according to the present invention has an excellent appearance and uniform density, in that the pre-expanded particles are well fused together.
The expansion molded article has a cushioning property similar to a conventional crosslinked low density polyethylene molded article (at high pressure), with a higher expansion ratio (lower bulk density) and also exhibits excellent toughness. and resistance to
the heat. The expansion molded article is suitable as a packaging material, as a thermal insulation material, as a cushioning material or as a container.
The invention will now be described in a more special way and will be illustrated by means of the following examples,
in which all parts are by weight, unless otherwise specified. It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the examples described below and that various modifications and variants may
be made without leaving his mind and
of its reach.
Example 1

300 parts of water.
LPLD-8020 is a LDPE-L prepared by vapor phase copolymerization of ethylene and butene-1 and having a PF of 120 [deg.] C, an IF of 1.1 g / 10 min, a specific gravity of 0.920 g / cm <3>, a Mp of 8.9 x 104 and a Mp / Mn of
<EMI ID = 9.1>
After stirring the mixture, 45 parts of dichlorodifluoromethane were added to the dispersion thus obtained, with stirring and the temperature of the dispersion was raised to 116 [deg.] C. At that time, the pressure in the autoclave was 27 kg / cm.
By opening a release valve or valve provided in the lower part of the autoclave, the aqueous dispersion of the LDPE-L particles was released in an atmosphere at normal pressure, through a round orifice having a diameter of 4 mm made in an orifice plate mounted behind the valve or valve, to obtain pre-expanded particles. During the release operation, the internal pressure of the autoclave was maintained
at 27 kg / cm <2> by the introduction of dichlorodifluoromethane.
The pre-expanded particles obtained had a uniform pre-expansion ratio (average pre-expansion ratio of about 23 times) and were not fused
to each other. The pre-expanded particles were dried at
room temperature for 24 hours and they were expanded in a mold (900mm x 600mm x 60mm single cavity mold) that had been installed
in an expansion or foaming machine SC-10B (placing
on the market by the company Tokyo Kikai Kinzoku Kabushiki Kaisha) by heating with steam at a gauge pressure of 1.0 kg / cm <2> for 20 seconds, so as to cause the pre-expanded particles to merge together. After cooling, the article was removed

The pre-expanded particles thus obtained had a uniform pre-expansion ratio (average pre-expansion ratio of approximately 24 times) and were not fused with each other.
By using pre-expanded particles,
repeated the mold expansion processes described in Example 1 to obtain an excellent expansion molded article having a specific weight of 0.028 g / cm <3> and a smooth surface, in which the pre-expanded particles were suitably fused to each other. The percentage of contraction or shrinkage of the expansion molded article relative to the internal dimensions of the mold was very low (4%).

and an Mp / Mn of 4.5 to obtain pre-expanded particles.
The pre-expanded particles obtained had an average pre-expansion ratio of about 25 times and were not fused to each other. The pre-expansion ratios of the pre-expanded particles obtained during a 30 minute release period were uniform and were in the range of 23 to 27 times.

pre-expanded air particle cells. By using the pre-expanded particles, the mold expansion processes described in Example 1 were repeated in order to obtain an expansion molded article. After aging and drying at 80 ° C. for 15 hours, the expansion molded article obtained had a specific weight of 0.027 g / cm <3> and a smooth surface, the pre-expanded particles being perfectly fused with each other.
Comparative example 1

After stirring the mixture, 45 parts of dichlorodifluoro-methane were added to the dispersion thus obtained, with stirring, and the temperature of the dispersion was raised to 116 [deg.] C. At that time, the pressure in the autoclave was 27 kg / cm <2>.
By opening a release valve or valve, provided in the lower part of the autoclave, the aqueous dispersion of the LDPE-L particles was released in an atmosphere at normal pressure through a round orifice having a diameter of 4 mm, made in an orifice plate located behind the valve or valve, so as to obtain uniform pre-expanded particles having
an average pre-expansion ratio of approximately 22 times. The release operation was carried out while keeping the pressure in the autoclave constant at 27 kg / cm <2> by the introduction of dichlorodifluoromethane.
The pre-expanded particles were dried at room temperature for 24 hours. Then, the mold used in Example 1 was loaded with the desired pre-expanded particles and heating was carried out with various manometric pressures of water vapor from 0.5 to 1.5 kg / cm <2> for 5 to 60 seconds, and then the mold was cooled to obtain an expansion molded article. The expansion molded articles thus obtained were not good because the pre-expanded particles in the articles were inferior in elongation and had contracted or shrunk.
