BELL TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING, COMPANY
Naamloze Vennootschap Francis Wellesplein 1 B - 2018 ANTWERPEN België AANVRAAG VOOR EEN EERSTE VERBETERINGSOKTROOI AAN HET BELGISCHE OKTROOI NO 898 051 INGEDIEND OP 21 OKTOBER 1983 VOOR : TELECOMMUNICATIELIJNKETEN EN BIJBEHORENDE
POLARITEITSOMKEERKETEN
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

VREF = VTP6 - VBEF13 + VBET14 (l) waarin VTP6 de spanning is op het aftakpunt van de spannings-

VAG to VAUX.

IMPROVEMENT PATTERN
BELL TELEPHONE MANUFACTURING, COMPANY
Public Company Francis Wellesplein 1 B - 2018 ANTWERP Belgium APPLICATION FOR A FIRST IMPROVEMENT PATENT AT BELGIAN OCTROY NO 898 051 SUBMITTED OCTOBER 21TH 1983 FOR: TELECOMMUNICATION LINE CHAIN AND RELATED CHAIN
POLARITY REVERSE CHAIN
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a polarity reversal circuit, e.g., to reverse the polarity of first and second line conductors of a telecommunication line, this circuit comprising:
at least one differential amplifier circuit having first and second mutually coupled amplifiers having a common polarization circuit as well as first and second inputs, and a signal source capable of applying a constant first voltage to this first input and a gradually changing second voltage to this second input gate-to-source path of a first and a second field effect transistor, respectively, in order to reverse the polarity of the output signal provided by the differential amplifier.
Such a polarity reversal circuit capable of effecting smoothly reversed reversals is already known from the Belgian patent no. 898. 051. In this known circuit, the source electrode of each of the first and second field effect transistors is directly connected to the first and second inputs, respectively. of the differential amplifier and also with a supply voltage via the drain-to-source path of a respective other field effect transistor, both last

have adjustment characteristics.
More particularly, the above-mentioned first3 and second field-effect transistors may have different threshold voltages. If this difference is relatively large t. n. v. the first input voltage and t. o. v. the change range of the second input voltage, both of which are relatively small, the operating symmetry and therefore also the accuracy of the operation of the differential amplifier is adversely affected.
Also the above mentioned other field effect transistors may have different threshold voltages and in this case different currents are diverted to the supply voltage both by these other transistors and by the first and second field effect transistors. In order to allow different currents to flow in these first and second transistors, different gate-to-source voltages must be applied thereto.

be laid. This again adversely affects the operating symmetry and accuracy of the differential amplifier.
It should be noted that the values of the threshold voltages also depend on the temperature, so that temperature changes also adversely affect the differential amplifier.
An object of the present invention is to provide a polarity reversal circuit of the aforementioned type, but with an increased operating accuracy t. o. v. the known technique.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the source electrodes of these first and second field effect transistors are coupled to a common reference voltage via the base emitter junction of a respective bipolar transistor emitter follower each in series with a respective

inputs of the differential amplifier are the same as in the known circuit, it is clear that the above-mentioned first and second input voltages by the voltage division can be markedly larger than those appearing on the amplifier inputs because the latter are fractions of the former. As a result, the influence of the first and second field effect transistors, which can have different threshold voltages, on the operating accuracy of the differential amplifier is correspondingly reduced.
Due to the presence of the bipolar emitter follower transistors, the currents to be supplied by the first and second field effect transistors are both small so that the difference between these dreams is also small in case of mismatch between these transistors. As a result, the gate-to-source voltages are required for it. allow flows of these flows, even small and the same goes for their difference. Thus, the operating accuracy of the differential amplifier is further increased even in the case of temperature changes.
Another feature of the present polarity reversal circuit is that it further comprises a reference voltage circuit which provides this common reference voltage to its output terminal and comprises a first resistive voltage divider whose resistance is connected between supply voltages and a tap point to this output terminal via the series connection of the base-emitter junction of third and fourth bipolar transistors of opposite conductivity type is connected.
In this way, the substantially equal and temperature dependent saturation voltages VBE of the third and

voltages are virtually independent of temperature because they are usually provided by a signal source which is kept at a substantially constant temperature.
Yet another characteristic feature of the present polarity reversal circuit is that this signal source includes a capacitance with associated controlled second and third constant / current sources that allow to discharge and charge this capacitance between respective supply voltages, this variable second voltage is generated at the junction of this capacitance and these second and third constant current sources.
Thus, since capacitance is charged and discharged in a linear fashion, the time to perform this operation is minimum compared to the known circuit in which a capacitance is charged or discharged exponentially. The linear operation contributes to the operating symmetry and accuracy of the differential amplifier, while the reduced operating time allows the execution of an increased number of smoothly reversed polarity reversals within a predetermined time. This feature may be required in a telecommunication system that uses coin devices and in which coins are to be cascaded at relatively high speed by successive polarity changes of the telecommunication line without triggering clicks on this line.
The above-mentioned and other objects and features of the invention will become more apparent and the invention itself will be best understood by reference to the following description of an embodiment and

These inverting inputs are also connected to a common "control terminal VFB through equal resistors R4 and R5 of equal value. The non-inverting inputs TDC and RDC of LOAO and LOA1 are connected to a common terminal SMI through resistors R6 and R7, which again have the same value.
A common control terminal VX is further connected both to the non-inverting input terminal TDC via resistor R8, buffer BUF1 and resistor RIO in series, and to the non-inverting input terminal RDC via resistor R9, buffer BUF2 and resistor R11 in series.

In a manner similar to that described in reference C, a polarization DC voltage VX is generated on the above-mentioned common terminal vx. This bias voltage, which is now equal to (V +) - v, where v consists of a fixed voltage on which a voltage proportional to the amplitude of a valuation signal has been superimposed, is applied to the non-inverting inputs TDC and RDC of LOAO and LOA, respectively.
The SLIC further includes a circuit described below which is capable of applying suitable DC voltages to the non-inverting inputs TDC and RDC of amplifiers LOAO and LOA1, so that these amplifiers supply respective voltages (V +) -v to LIO and VEET + v. LIl or vice-versa, or VEET + v to both LIO and LI1. This chain is also designed to realize polarity reversals, d. w. z. to change the respective voltages on the lines LIO and LI1 simultaneously from (V +) - v to VEET + ven from VEET + v to (V +) - v or vice-versa. This is done in a gradual manner similar to that described in Reference C above or in a more sudden manner.
The circuit includes a differential amplifier circuit having amplifiers T1, T2 and T3, T4 which have a common constant polarization current source T5, T6. This amplifier circuit has signal inputs TP1 and TP2, a reference voltage input VREF, control voltage inputs VPA and VPB and outputs BR1 and BR2 connected to the junctions of R9 and BUF2 and of R8 and BUF1, respectively. The unified emitters of transistors T2 and T4 are connected --- to the interconnected collectors of both bipolar / emitter follower NPN transistors T5 and T6 which are part of a constant polarization power source. This constant current source is not fully shown, but it is similar to that disclosed in Reference C above, except that it includes bipolar transistors instead of MOS transistors. More specifically, the emitters of transistors TS and T6 are V-connected through emitter resistors R12 and R13 of equal value and the base is

This terminal is also connected to the gate of PMOS transistor PM1 whose source-to-drain path is connected in parallel with the series connection of the base emitter junction of T6 and the resistor R13. The constant current which can be generated in the collector of each of transistors T5 and T6 by the constant polarization current source is called I1.
A signal source added to the amplifier inputs is capable of applying a constant voltage and a linearly changing voltage to the signal inputs TP1 and TP2 of the differential amplifier described above, respectively. This signal source comprises a resistive voltage divider consisting of the resistors R14 and RIS, which are connected in series between the emitter of the emitter follower NPN transistor T7 and the reference voltage PREF which have a tap TP1 connected to the input TPI of the amplifier T1, T2.
Transistor T7 is in Darlington array- \

The amplifier signal input TP2 is connected to the tap of the same name of a resistive voltage divider, which is also part of a signal source and consists of the resistors R18 and R19 connected in series between the emitter of the emitter follower NPN transistor T8 and the reference voltage. The latter transistor T8 is connected in Darlington arrangement to the NMOS transistor NM3 between the junction TP4 of a capacitor C and two equally controlled constant current sources CS1 and CS2, the free ends of which are connected to VAG, VAUX and VAG, respectively. The constant current that can be generated by each of CS1 and CS2 is called I2. CS1 and CS2 are controlled by the binary control signals BR and BR, respectively.
The above-mentioned amplifier control input VPA, to which an eponymous control voltage VPA can be applied, is connected to the bases of two NPN transistors T9 and T10 via resistors R24 and R25, respectively. Transistors T9 and T10 are connected in parallel to amplifiers T1, T2 and T3, T4, respectively.

When the circuit is in operating state, the constant bias voltage signal Bl is at 0, while the binary control signal
VPB is activated or not.
It is first assumed that the control signal
VPB is deactivated (O) so that the VPB signal is activated (l). In this case, operation of the transistor T12 is prevented, since the transistor NM7 is then conductive through the transistor PM3 which is conductive together with the transistor PM3 because the signal
Bl is at 0. Because PM2 is conductive, a constant current I3 can flow into the drain electrodes of the transistors
NM5 and; trip so that the transistors T13 and T14 are conductive and a reference voltage of the same name at the output terminal VREF

divider voltages of T13 and T14.
Since VBET is virtually equal to VBET14, the reference voltage VREF is virtually independent of temperature changes although VBET13 and VBET14 themselves are temperature dependent.
Because VPD is at 0, transistor go - conducting while NM1 is blocked, so that transistor T6 is prevented from being turned on and the connection between the bases of T5 and T6 is interrupted. Therefore, the polarization

With the values of the components given above, the reference voltage VREF is substantially equal to 2.75 Volts above V- and sufficient to prevent transistor T5 from becoming saturated.
In case the current source CS2 is turned on by the binary control signal BR, the capacitor C is fully discharged so that the voltage at the junction TP4 of C, CS1 and CS2 is VAG. As a result, the input voltage VTP8 at the signal input TP2 of the differential amplifier is given by:

where v1 is the full voltage drop in the gate-to-source and base-emitter paths of NM3 and T8.
On the other hand, the input voltage VTPI on the signal input TP1 of this amplifier is constant and is given by:

position R8 no current flows, while a current flows from
VX to V- via the series connection of resistor R9, amplifier
T1, T2, transistor T5 and resistor R12.
Because VX is at a voltage (V +) - v and given the current Il in the resistor
R9 causes a voltage drop equal to (V +) - 2v - VEET, --- the voltage on terminal BR2 is equal to (V +) - v, while on terminal BR2 is equal to VEET + v, as required. Since these voltages are applied to the non-inverting inputs of LOAO and LOA1, respectively, they appear on the respective conductors LIO and LI1.
In case the current source CS1 is activated by the binary control signal BR, the capacitor C is fully charged so that the voltage at the connection point TP4 of C,
CS1 and CS2 equals VAUX. As a result, the input voltage TP2 on the differential amplifier signal input TP2 is given by:
EMI14.1
With the voltage values given above and again with vl = 1.7 Volts, one obtains
VTP2 = VREF + 1.75 Volts (10)
As a result, the amplifier T3, T4 operates while the amplifier T1, T2 is blocked so that the voltages at terminals BR2 and BR1 are equal to VEET + v and (v +) - v, respectively. Since these voltages are applied to the non-inverting inputs of LOAO and LCA1, they appear on the

LIO and LI1 line controllers respectively.

operation of current sources CS1 and CS2 appropriately by means of binary control signals BR, BR.
For example, if initially CS2 is active and CS1 is not, so that the line conductor LIO is at (V +) - v, while the line conductor LIl is at VEET + v, it is sufficient to stop the operation of CS2 and start it from CS1 by BR = 0 and BR = 1. Indeed, in this way the capacitor C at the connection point TP1 is charged linearly by CS1 from
VAG to VAUX.
As a result, the voltage VTP2 at the input TP2 of the differential amplifier circuit changes linearly from the value given by the above relationship (5) to that given by the relationship (9) or from the value given by (7) to that determined by (10 ). Since the voltage VTP1 at the other input TP1 of this amplifier circuit remains constant, and has, for example, the value given by relation (7), the amplifier T1, T2 will be gradually blocked while the amplifier T3, T4 will gradually operate, as already was described in reference C. Since the voltage change on the amplifier input TP2 is small, the state of the amplifier circuit is changed relatively quickly but still gradually, so that more than three gradual polarity reversals per second can be realized.
In case the binary control signal VPB is deactivated, the transistors T11 and TU are conductive so that the control signal VPA generated on the terminal VPA is then activated. Because VPB = 1, the transistor NM1 is conductive, while transistor PM1 is blocked, so that transistor T6 is connected in parallel with transistor T5. Consequently, the polarization current I4 for the amplifiers T1, T2 and T3, T4 is equal to 211.

This pA n is = i, z-n data transmission through each of which flows from VX to V-1. As a result, the voltages on the outputs BR1 and BR2 become

both equal to VEET + v.
It should be noted that, except for capacitor C, all other components of the above-described circuit are integrated on a chip so that it is possible to use a relatively large capacitor. From the foregoing it follows that the state of VPA is predominant, d. w. z. when VPA is activated the amplifiers T1, T2 and T3, 'T4 cannot become active.
Although the principles of the invention have been described above with reference to a particular embodiment, it is clear that the description is given by way of example only and the invention is not limited thereto.
