<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 een versterker en de bijbehorende correctieketen volgens de uitvinding in detail voorstelt ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.1
f
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.4
met VOSB = R3. 11 (7)
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
zodat
EMI7.1
EMI7.2
betrekkingen geschreven kunnen worden
EMI7.3
VDD-VSS + Rl. + 12) (9) of VOD-R2. + Rl.
+ (R + Rl + R2-R3).
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.5
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

CORRECTION CHAIN FOR AN AMPLIFIER
The invention relates to a correction circuit for an amplifier, which comprises the series connection of two transistors of the opposite conductivity type and provided with control electrodes on which control DC voltages are applied by control means.
Such an amplifier is generally known in the art. Ideally, the nominal values of the control DC voltages should be such that the quiescent currents through the two transistors are equal. However, for various reasons, such as deviations in the method with which the transistors are manufactured, these control DC voltages can deviate. o. display their nominal values. This can adversely affect the operation of the amplifier.
Indeed, if, for example, these deviations have the opposite sign t. o. w. their respective nominal values, this results in the transistors being either more or less conductive. Therefore, if the deviations are relatively large, this may give rise to an excessive current consumption or to a blocking (cross-over distortion) of the transistors.
The object of the invention is to provide a correction circuit for such an amplifier, whereby this adverse effect on this amplifier is nullified or at least significantly reduced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the correction circuit is able to keep the DC voltage between these control electrodes substantially constant.
Thus, deviations from the control DC voltages provided by the control means and those of an opposite sign: njn t. o. due to their respective nominal values, do not adversely affect the operation of the amplifier.
Another feature of the present correction circuit is that it is formed by the series connection of an impedance connected between these control electrodes and two current sources which provide the same current and with respective ends
EMI2.1
of this generates this substantially constant voltage across this impedance.
The foregoing and other objects and features of the invention will become more apparent and the invention itself will be best understood from the following description of an exemplary embodiment and from the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in detail an amplifier and the associated correction circuit according to the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a replacement scheme of this correction circuit and amplifier to illustrate its operation.
Oe in fig. The proposed amplifier is a class AB amplifier and includes a bias circuit BC, a differential amplifier input stage DAS. an output stage OS and a correction circuit CC. This amplifier includes the PMOS transistors PM1 to PM11. the NMOS transistors NM1 to NM8 and the capacitors C1 and C2 and operates with the supply voltages VDD and VSS, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
equals +5 Volts and -5 Volts, respectively.
A control DC voltage CV, which is equal to VSS or VDD, is further used to switch the amplifier on or off by making or blocking the transistor PM2, respectively.
The bias circuit BC is a current source formed by the series connection of the transistors PMI, PM2, PM3 and NM1, for PMI, PM3 and NM1 the gate and drain electrodes are interconnected and PMZ is driven by the DC voltage CV, as mentioned above . Transistor PMI is connected in current mirroring to transistors PM6 and PMIU and the same applies to transistor NM1 and transistors NM4 and NM8. This means that if 1 is the current flowing through transistors PWlt PM2, PM3 and NWl, the same current will flow through transistors PM6, PMIO. NM4 and NM8 flows if the latter transistors have the same dimensions.
However, these dimensions are chosen such that current I flows through PMIO and NM8, while current 11 flows through PM6 and NM4.
The differential amplifier input stage DAS with input terminals T1 and T2 consists of two differential amplifier circuits connected in anti-parallel between VDD and VSS. The Tit T2 inputs of the same name are linked together and each of them is of the type described on page 219 of the book "Analysis and Design of Analog Integrated Circuits" by DOM P. R. Gray and R. G. Meyer, John Wiley and Sons. The first one of these differential amplifier circuits includes transistors PM4, PM5, PM6, NM5, NM6, while the second includes transistors NM2, NM3, NM4, PM7 and PM8.
In the first differential amplifier chain it is
EMI3.1
source-to-drain path of PM6 connected between VDD and VSS in series, on the one hand with the source-to-drain path of emitter-follower transistor PM4 and the drain-to-source path
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from. the diode-switched transistor NM5 and, on the other hand, with the source-to-drain path of emitter-follower transistor
PM5 and the drain-to-source path of NM6. Hereby forms
PM6 is a current source that supplies the current I and is NM4 in current mirror circuit connected to NM6, which forms an active load with resistor of nominal value R1 of the amplifier circuit. The drain of NM6 is the output A of this first differential amplifier circuit.
In the second differential amplifier circuit, the source-to-drain path of the diode-switched transistor PM7 and the drain-to-source path of emitter-follower transistor NM2 between VDD and VSS are connected in series with the drain-to-source path of NM4 and also to drain path of PM8 and the drain to source path of emitter follower transistor NM3 between the same voltages connected in series with the drain to source path of NM4. Here, NM4 is a current source providing the current I and PM7 in current mirror circuit is connected to PM8 which forms an active load with resistor of nominal value R2 of the amplifier.
The drain of PM8 is the output 9 of this second differential amplifier circuit.
The output stage OS comprises the source-to-drain paths of the transistors PM9 and NM7 connected in series between VDD and VSS, the gates of which are connected to the outputs B and A of the second and first amplifier circuits, respectively. In addition, the outputs A and B are connected to the drain electrodes of NM7 and PM9, respectively, through the capacitors C1 and C2, which serve to determine the frequency characteristic of the amplifier.
Thus, the first and second differential amplifier circuits apply nominal control DC voltages to gates A and B through respective resistors of nominal values, R1 and R2, and as mentioned above,
EMI4.1
f
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
purpose of the correction chain CC is the negative influence of deviations from these DC voltages t. o. to cancel or at least significantly reduce their respective nominal values on the output stage of the amplifiers. This correction circuit CC comprises the series connection, between VDD and VSS, of the source-to-drain paths of transistors PM10 PM11 and NM8, whereby the drain and source electrodes of PMII are connected
EMI5.1
joined together.
Here, PMIO and HMS form current sources, each of which provides a current I and PMII is a resistor called R.
As mentioned above, each of the first and second differential amplifier circuits of the differential amplifier input stage, which in fact constitute output stage control means, is known per se, and therefore the operation of this stage is not described. It is only noted that these first and second differential amplifier circuits serve to amplify negative and positively directed signals applied to input T1, T2, respectively.
To understand the operation of the correction circuit CC, reference is now made to FIG. 2 showing a replacement diagram of the amplifier circuit of FIG. 1, but without the bias circuit BC and assuming that the transistors PM4, PMS, NM2 and NM3 are conductive.
The NM7 port is connected with
EMI5.2
the junction A of PM6 and NM7, which respectively form a current source and a resistor R1, this current source providing the current 11.. The power source NN8. supplying the current I is further connected between the gate and source electrodes of NW7. Similarly, the gate of PM9 is coupled to the junction B of PM8 and NM4. which form a resistor R2 and a current source, respectively, said current source providing the current 11. The power source PAID, which is the current I.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
supplies 1S further connected between the source and gate electrodes of PM9.
If VA and VB are called the nominal DC voltages present at the outputs A and B of the first and second differential amplifier circuits, in the absence of DC offset (offset), the following applies:
EMI6.1
Because :
EMI6.2
the relation (l) written Morden:
EMI6.3
If VOSA and VOSB the DC voltage deviations t. o. v. are called the nominal values VA and VB, they can have an adverse effect on the operation of the amplifier. Indeed: - if VOSA and VOSB are positive and negative t. o. v. VA and VB then NM7 and PM9 both become more conductive and therefore give rise to higher power consumption; - if VOSA and VOSB are negative and positive, respectively. o. v.
VA and VB then NM7 and PM9 both become less conductive and if these voltage changes! If these transistors are sufficiently large, they can be blocked.
If the correction chain CC is not present and there is a positive DC voltage deviation VOSB t. v. VB occurs, for example because the resistor R2 has the value R2 R3 instead of its nominal value, then the following relation can be written, since the current 11 then flows completely through R2 - R3:
EMI6.4
with VOSB = R3. 11 (7)
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
so that
EMI7.1
This means that the full DC deviation VOSB appears across the output BA of the amplifier, which is undesirable.
However, if the correction circuit CC is present, the above-mentioned DC deviation VOSB has the following influence on the DC voltage appearing on output BA.
Due to the presence of CC, an additional (negative or positive) current 12 can now flow from VDD to VSS via R2 - R3, R and R1, so that the following
EMI 7.2
relations can be written
EMI7.3
VDD-VSS + Rl. + 12) (9) or VOD-R2. + Rl.
+ (R + R1 + R2-R3). (10): Taking into account relations (2), (3) and (4), it follows that:
EMI7.4
Given the voltage V "B - V" A ower the output BA is given by
EMI7.5
taking into account the relation (11), it can be written as follows:
EMI7.6
or, taking into account the relationship (7):
EMI7.7
as
EMI7.8
In case VOSB is caused by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
deviation from R2 to R2 + R3 then one has that F is approximately given by:
EMI8.1
EMI8.2
R1 + R2.
This means that if R then 1 is chosen. this factor F becomes very small, so that the proportion of the DC voltage deviation in the output differential voltage, which according to the relationship (8), is equal to VOSB without CC is converted to F. VDSB which is much smaller than VOSB. In other words. the output voltage remains almost constant and equal to RI, regardless of the DC voltage deviation from the control DC voltage.
In a preferred twist, the value of R is substantially ten times less than the sum of R1 and R2 and the resistance R3 is a few percent of R1.
It is clear that a DC voltage deviation VSOA is caused, for example, by a change from RI to R1; R4 has a similar influence on the voltage across BA as a deviation VOSB caused by a
EMI8.3
change from R2 to R2 Z R3.
If not only R2 but also R1 shows a deviation. then the differential voltage VB-VA can be written as follows:
EMI8.4
In this case, the DC voltage deviation VOSB - VOSA, which would be present integral over BA without the CC chain, is thus reduced to (VOSB-VOSA) .G (18) where G is given by:
EMI8.5
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
By choosing this factor G very small, the deviation on the output voltage becomes negligibly small d. w. z. this output voltage remains almost constant and equal to RI.
It is also clear from the formula (17) that the chain CC only works if VOSA is different from VOSB and not if they are equal. It also follows that both deviations VOSA, VOSB of a different sign t. o. their respective nominal values VA and VB, if deviations from the same sign, but which are different from each other, are corrected.
Although the principles of the invention have been described above with reference to certain embodiments and modifications thereof, it is clear that the description is given by way of example only and the invention is not limited thereto.
