UITVINDINGSOCTROOIAANVRAGE ten name van
MEDICAL PRESS SERVICE A/S gevestigd te
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

2 is getekend.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTION associated with a
INVENTION PATENT APPLICATION in the name of
MEDICAL PRESS SERVICE A / S established in
Copenhagen, Denmark for: Device for extracting poison from stings and bites from insects or other animals
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention relates to a device for extracting poison from stings and bites of insects or other animals.
Various forms of such devices are known, consisting of a cylinder with a finger-operated suction piston which is movable therein between a front and a retracted position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this general type which is compact and mechanically strong, convenient to operate, very effective for extracting poison from stings and bites on all points of the human body and easily to assemble and disassemble, such as for cleaning.
According to the invention, said piston is provided with a shaft portion with intersecting ribs which fit into the cylinder and is provided at the rear end with finger grips which extend transversely through longitudinal slots in the cylinder wall, which slots extend into the rear portion of the cylinder wall, whereby a cap is provided for sealing the rear end of the cylinder and the rear ends of those slots, which cap has a circumferential groove in which the rear edge portions of the cylinder can be received.
In this construction, it is possible to cast the piston, the shaft portion and the finger grips in one piece, which can be slid into the cylinder from the open end, the finger grips being placed in the open slots, after which the cap is put on for closing and reinforcing the rear end of the cylinder and closing the ends of the slots.
Further advantages will become apparent from the description with reference to the accompanying drawing. In the drawing: Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section through a device according to the invention with the piston in the front position and the suction nozzle Ln the one position, Fig. 2 shows a corresponding longitudinal section through the device according to the invention with the piston in the retracted position and with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the suction nozzle in its other position, fig. 3 shows a bottom view of the device according to fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows A-A, and fig. 4 shows a section along the line B-B in fig. 2.
The device shown in the drawing comprises a piston 1, the one end of which, referred to in the following front end, terminates in a flat end wall 2 with a central round opening 3 to form a nozzle or tubular part 4 which is axially inside the cylinder extends. A reversible double suction nozzle 5,6 is provided at the front end of the cylinder, one portion of which is cup-shaped and has an inner diameter that frictionally fits around the circumferential surface of the cylinder 1, while the other portion 6 of the nozzle is tubular and has an outer diameter which can co-operate with the inner surface of the tubular member 4 by friction. The nozzle can therefore be placed in the cylinder in two inverted positions, one of which is shown in Figure 1 and the other in Figure 2.
In the first position, the active edge of the suction nozzle has a diameter which substantially corresponds to the diameter of the cylinder, while in the second position the. active rim, the nozzle of which has a substantially smaller diameter.
In the cylinder there is a suction piston 7, which is sealed against the cylinder wall by means of an O-ring 8. At the front surface of the cylinder 7 there is a cavity of such dimensions that in the front position of the piston it tubular portion 4 can receive so that the piston is pushed up to the end wall 2 of the cylinder, keeping dead space of the pump as small as possible.
The piston further has a shaft portion 10 with intersecting ribs which fit into the cylinder. At the rear end of the shaft section there is a transverse section 11 with finger grips 12,13 which extend transversely through the longitudinal slots 14,15 in the cylinder wall. On their underside, finger grips 12,13 are provided with roughened recesses 16,17 for effective grip. The ends of the finger grips are flat to form sharp edges 18,19 which run parallel to the cylinder axis.
Slots 14,15 extend to the rear edge portion of the cylinder wall and have open ends in that portion. At the back of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the cylinder houses a hood 20, which has a circumferential groove 21 on its inside, in which the rear edge portions of the cylinder can be received, so that the hood closes off the rear end of the cylinder and the rear ends of the slots 14, 15. The top surface of the cap 20 is slightly inwardly cup-shaped to form good support for the thumb
When the device is used, the piston 7 is pushed forward by applying pressure to the top of the finger grips 12, 13, if it has not yet entered the actuated position.
When circumstances require, the nozzle 5,6 as discussed above is turned over. The device is started with one hand with the thumb (or palm of the hand) resting on the cap 20, and two fingers then rest in the recesses 16.17 of the finger grips 12.13. The leading edge of the suction nozzle 6, which can cooperate with the edge of the cup-shaped part 5 or the edge of the tubular part 6, as the case may be, is pressed firmly against the skin around the sting or bite.
The large diameter rim facilitates proper fitting of the device to the skin such that the rim will certainly enclose the bite or sting, but if the bite or sting is at a point on the body where, taking into account a strong convex or concave body contour, the large diameter rim cannot be brought into sealing contact with the skin, in which case the mouthpiece is turned over to use the small diameter rim which is then pressed against the skin. The piston 7 is now retracted with the finger grips 12, 13, the lid 20 serving as a counter-pressure support. Furthermore, a vacuum is created in the cylinder, whereby poison is sucked out of the sting or bite. After the plunger is fully retracted, the device is removed from the skin with the extracted venom removed in an appropriate manner.
All parts of the device can be conveniently made of plastic and can be easily mounted by sliding the piston 7 with the shaft portion 10 from the open rear end 1 into the cylinder with the finger grips 12,13 in the open slots 14,15. after which the cap 20 is put on to close and stiffen the rear end of the cylinder and also to close the ends of the slots. The device can be disassembled, for example for an internal inspection or for cleaning by performing the same operations in the reverse sense.
