Complete Specification Filed: i?.'.?.$*/• Class: SI I .j.CO. ;y r-JUU198GT/ ;Publication Date: • ;P.O. JoumaJ, No: .id.%.S5 ;"5 JUL 1984 ;NEW ZEALAND ;The Patents, Designs and Trade Marks Act ;COMPLETE SPECIFICATION • ;A DEVICE FOR EXTRACTING POISON FROM STINGS AND BITES OF ;INSECTS OR OTHER ANIMALS. ;We, MEDICAL PRESS SERVICE A/S, of Lyngby Hovedgade 11 B, DK-2800 Lyngby, Denmark, a company organized under the laws of Denmark, do hereby declare this invention antf the manner in which it is to be performed to be fully described and ascertained in and by the following statement:- ;1 ;203787 ;The invention relates to a device for extracting poison from stings and bites of insects or other animals. ;Various forms of such devices are known, comprising a cylinder with a pressure operated suction piston therein. 5 It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and in expensive device of this general nature which is compact and mechanically strong, handy in operation, highly efficient for extracting poison from stings and bites in all points of the human body, and easy to assemble and disassemble, such as for cleaning. 10 With this object in view, there is provided, according to the invention, a device comprising a cylinder having a front end and a rear end, said cylinder being provided at its front end with a flat end wall having a central opening forming the mouth of a tubular portion extending axially into the interior of the cylinder, a piston 15 slidably mounted in said cylinder for movement between a forward position adjacent said end wall and a retracted position, said piston having a front face with a front cavity accommodating said tubular portion in said forward position of said piston, said piston being provided with a shank portion consisting of mutually crossing ribs 20 fitting in the cylinder and constructed at its rear end with finger grips extending transversely through longitudinal slots in the cylinder wall, said slots extending to the rear margin of the cylinder wall, a cap closing the rear end of the cylinder and the rear ends of said slots, said cap having an annular groove in which the rear marginal 25 portion of the cylinder Is engageable, and an invertible suction mouthpiece having a wide portion frictionally engageable with the outer wall of the cylinder at the front end thereof in one of the positions of the mouthpiece, and a narrow portion frictionally engageable with the inner wall of said tubular portion in the other position 30 of the mouthpiece. ;As will be explained in further detail below, a device constructed as set forth combines all the desirable characteristics referred to above. Particularly, it is pointed out that by removing the mouthpiece, inverting it and re-applying it in the inverted position the 35 diameter of the edge to be pressed sealingly against the skin can be shifted from a value substantially corresponding to the cylinder diameter to a considerably smaller value. The edge having the larc diameter facilitates the correct application of the device to the &Kl.rt ' o5 ;I/\ *

such a manner that the edge with certainty encircles the bite or sting, but if the bite or sting occurs at a point of the body where, on account of strongly convex or concave body contours, the larger diameter edge could not be pressed into sealing contact with the skin, 5 all that is necessary is to invert the mouthpiece and to use the smaller diameter edge for pressing against the skin. In either case the piston is then retracted from its forward position by means of the finger grips to create a vacuum causing the poison to be sucked out from the bite or sting.
The advantageous properties of the device according to the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through a device accord-15 ing to the invention with the piston in its forward position and with the suction mouthpiece in one of its positions,
Fig. 2 is a corresponding longitudinal section through the device according to the invention with the piston 20 in its retracted position and with the suction mouthpiece in the other one of its positions, Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the device of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows A-A, and Fig. 4 a section along the line B-B in Fig. 2. 25 The device shown in the drawing comprises a cylinder 1,
which at one end, in the following referred to as its front end, is terminated by a flat end wall 2 having a central circular opening 3 forming the mouth of a tubular portion 4 extending axially into the interior of the cylinder. At the front end of the cylinder there is 30 provided an invertible double suction mouthpiece 5, 6, one portion 5 of which is cup-shaped and has an inner diameter fitting for frictional engagement with the circumferential surface of the cylinder 1, while the other portion 6 of the mouthpiece is tubujar and has an outer diameter fitting for frictional engagement with the inner surface of 35 the tubular portion 4. The mouthpiece can therefore be applied to the cylinder in two mutually inverted positions, of which one is shown in Fig. 1 and the other in Fig. 2. In the first position, the active edge
3
208787
of the suction mouthpiece has a diameter substantially corresponding to the diameter of the cylinder, while in the second position the active edge of the mouthpiece has substantially smaller diameter.
In the cylinder there is provided a suction piston 7, which 5 is sealed against the cylinder wall by means of an O-ring 8. In the front face of the piston 7 there is provided a front cavity which is so dimensioned that in the forward position of the piston it can accommodate the tubular portion 4 and thereby permits the piston to be pushed forward all the way to the end wall 2 of the cylinder, whereby 10 the dead volume of the pump is kept as small as possible.
The piston also has a shank portion 10 consisting of mutually crossing ribs slidingly fitting in the cylinder. At the rear end of the shank portion there is provided a cross piece 11 with finger grips 12, 13 extending transversely through longitudinal slots 14, 15 in the 15 cylinder wall. On their lower side, the finger grips 12, 13 are provided with rounded recesses 16, 17 for convenient gripping. The ends of the finger grips are flattened to form sharp edges 18, 19 extending parallel to the cylinder axis.
The slots 14, 15 extend to the rear margin of the cylinder 20 wall and have open ends in that position. At its rear end the cylinder is provided with a cap 20, which on its inner side har a circular groove 21, in which the rear marginal portion of the cylinder is engageable so that the cap closes the rear end of the cylinder and the rear ends of the slots 14, 15. The top surface of the cap 20 is 25 slightly inwardly domed so" as to provide a good support for a thumb.
When the device is to be used, the piston 7 is pushed forward to its forward position by exerting a pressure on the upper side of the finger grips 12, 13, if it did not beforehand assume this position. If required in the circumstances the mouthpiece 5, 6 is inverted 30 as previously explained. The device is gripped in a hand with the thumb (or the palm of the hand) resting on the cap 20 and two fingers resting on the recesses 16, 17 of the finger grips 12, 13. The forward edge of the suction mouthpiece 6, which may be the edge of the cup-shaped portion 5 or the edge of the tubular portion 6, as the 35 case may be, is pressed firmly against the skin around the sting or bite and the piston 7 is retracted by means of the finger grips 12, 13, the cover 20 serving as counter pressure abutment. Hereby a vacuum is created in the cylinder, whereby poison is sucked out of

the sting or bite. After the piston has been fully or partly withdrawn, the device is pulled off from the skin and the poison extracted by the suction may be removed in any suitable manner.
All the parts of the device can advantageously be made 5 from plastics material and may, as will be seen, be assembled by merely putting the piston 7 with its shank portion 10 into the cylinder 1 from its open rear end, the finger grips 12, 13 being received in the open slots 14, 15, and then applying the cap 20 so as to close and reinforce the rear end of the cylinder and also to close the ends 10 of the slots. The device may be disassembled, such as for interior inspection or cleaning, by the same operations in reverse order.
