<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Binder, in particular for the construction of traffic surfaces"
The present invention relates to the use of a binder of a new type for the construction of traffic surfaces, in particular roads.
As a binder for the construction of traffic surfaces, in particular roads, bitumen, a product of the refining of mineral oils, is used worldwide. Bitumen has, as a binder for road construction, taken over from previously used products such as coal tar. The reasons are that, on the one hand, a few years ago, mineral oil reserves were available at low cost and that, on the other hand, bitumen with its greater plasticity margin has the necessary thermal sensitivity for the traffic load which has become stronger.
The exploding costs of mineral oils and the global shortage of these oils make it necessary internationally to search for alternative solutions which make it possible to be as widely as possible independent of mineral oils.
Thus currently mixtures of bitumen / pitch are applied, the necessary pitch being produced during the distillation of coal tar. However, coal tar pitch is also only available in one way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
re limited because it is used as a high value raw material for the preparation of carbon-based products. If pitch is to be used as the predominant component of the binder, the required margin of plasticity, i.e. the difference between the softening point and the point of brittleness, is only obtained by an expensive thermal modification of the pitch .
As another process for obtaining the necessary plasticity margin, the finely ground coal is known to be suspended in pitch from coal tar. The proportions of coal can go up to 10%. Coal is only dissolved in very small parts and it does not reach the qualitative data for the kinds of bitumen currently used. Bitumen substitute products must however largely meet these requirements in order to be satisfactory for problem-free treatment and solicitation power of modern road construction products.
These requirements are met by a road covering binder according to the patent application in German Federal Republic published OS 30 01 078, which is obtained by disintegration of ground coal or similar carbon-based raw materials with a combination of determined aromatic solvents, originating from petroleum and coal.
The desired penetration can be obtained by the fraction of the boiling points of the volatiles released by primary distillation as well as by the addition and the boiling point level of the highly aromatic tar fractions. The preparation of the binder has proven to be technologically expensive in this process. However the main drawback is, as is the case for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the other solutions described, in the fact that high-value raw materials are necessary as starting materials for the preparation of the binder.
The object of the present invention is to save economically important raw materials, such as coal and mineral oil, for the production of binders intended for the production of coatings for circulation surfaces.
The problem according to the invention is solved by the development of a new binder from substitutes for bitumen and coal, this binder meeting the requirements of current road construction and still being economically sufficient.
According to the invention, this problem is solved by a binder which consists of secondary materials and, surprisingly, of those which until now were considered in the specialist world, because of their properties, as unsuitable for use in the construction of traffic surfaces and roadways. The binder according to the invention consists of a propane bitumen and a plasticizing agent.
By combining the two products, suitable binders can be prepared for the construction of traffic and road surfaces. As a plasticizing agent for propane bitumen, bituminous and oily substances can be used, such as tar based on coal and lignite, tar pitches, pitch tar, fatty tar pitches, tar residues, cracked bitumen and cracked resins with a boiling range of less than 380 C. These
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
these can advantageously be replaced, from the point of view of their capacity, by residues of slow carbonization of coke and production of tar.
The proportions of the mixture are, when using tar residue, preferably between 60 to 80% by mass of propane bitumen and 20 to 40% by mass of tar residue.
By modifying the proportions of the components, that is to say of the propane bitumen and of the plasticizing agent, it is possible, depending on the desired goal, to prepare a binder having a different viscosity. We can thus meet practically all the requirements and realize all the construction methods required for the construction of the bituminous coating of road surfaces and roads. The binder prepared according to the invention has the following favorable properties for pavement construction: - high resistance to heat.
- a minimal change in shape when a force is introduced into a high range of temperatures.
- good cold behavior.
- flexibility, that is to say a great shape modification power without cracking, under a load and temperature action, at low temperatures. Irreversible cracks are avoided in the cold periods of the year as a result of thermal contraction and of exceeding the tensile strength under load and respectively in the period of weakest lift of the substrate. We observe a high resistance to wear and a great capacity of resistance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
this to the action of the gel and chemical anti-freeze agents.
- good adhesion to rock or rubble.
- an economical treatment for a very low energy expenditure, that is to say low treatment temperatures.
Propane bitumen is an extraction bitumen which, in the last stage of production of lubricating oils and mineral oils, is obtained as a residual product, during the final asphaltization by extraction of the residue from other stages of propane production. This extraction bitumen does not in principle meet any of the requirements for pavement construction bitumen. Therefore it is used as an additive in the preparation of building protection materials and binders for the construction of pavements, as well as for the preparation of a fragile filling mass or it is poured in large quantities on areas of pouring.
When using propane bitumen for the preparation of road construction binders, it is only applied in the form of an additive, in proportions of only 10 to 15% (TGL 29 207). It is already suddenly hard at 20 C and, in bituminous mixtures of the covering layers, it shows an extraordinarily bad cold behavior, that is to say that in the covering layer appear when freezing irreversible cracks which in a short time lead to the destruction of the road overlap. The resistance to wear under the action of traffic and weather is also low.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The technology for preparing the mixture does not differ fundamentally from the preparation of standardized bituminous mixtures, but care must be taken to ensure sufficient homogenization of the components of the binder. Either the two components, the propane bitumen and the plasticizing agent, are previously homogenized in a container having an agitator, or the two components are, during the mixing process, dosed separately in the mixer in the expected ratio.
To increase adhesion to rock or stones, the addition of an adhesion enhancing agent is necessary in certain circumstances.
The invention is described in more detail with the aid of the embodiments given below, without however being limited by the latter.
