<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to a contact device with a rigid contact bridge elastically maintained in the closed position and opposite contacts, preferably fixed for opening and closing an electrical circuit at will.
In contact devices of this kind, it has hitherto been customary to form the four contacts identically and to provide them with a domed shape.
Indeed, it turned out that, in particular for high current values, the contact devices mainly with a rigid contact bridge started to vibrate at a high frequency and consequently caused increased wear of the contacts as well as an unpleasant noise.
The object of the invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the contact devices of the prior art.
According to the invention, this is obtained by the fact that the contact bridge rests in the closed position with its contacts on the opposite contacts in three places arranged in a triangle. In this way, a stable and secure support of the contact bridge on the opposite contacts is guaranteed and thus the swinging of the contact bridge around its longitudinal axis is avoided. As it appeared during comparative tests, the noise level of a contact device according to the invention compared with the noise level of a traditional contact device comprising four similarly curved contact surfaces is substantially lower, as well as wear of the contacts of a contact device according to the invention.
According to a preferred form of the invention, a contact has two protrusions in the form of nipples, arranged on each side of the longitudinal axis of the contact bridge, that is to say on each side of the connecting line
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the two opposite contacts, in exchange for which the remaining contacts in known manner have a domed shape.
Thus, the device makes additional contacts unnecessary.
This advantage also occurs when one of the contacts has a groove extending in the longitudinal direction of the contact bridge, respectively in the direction of the contact line connecting the two opposite contacts, a groove whose depth is greater than the height of the spherical cap of the associated contact, curved, in known manner, resting on the edges of the groove.
This advantage also occurs when the groove is possibly V-shaped.
This advantage also occurs when the bottom of the groove and the edges of the groove are preferably rounded or have a section in the form of an arc of a circle.
In each case, a triangular support of the contact bridge is ensured and the contacts deviating from the usually domed contact shape can in each case be produced from the usually domed contacts by stamping the groove by means of a appropriately shaped tool.
The invention will now be described in light of the drawings in which: FIG. 1 represents a sectional view of a switch with a contact bridge device, FIG. 2, a side view of the contact bridge device according to the Figure 1, Figures 3 and 4, a first embodiment of a contact usable in a contact device according to the invention, Figures 5 and 6, a second embodiment of a contact, Figures 7 and 8, a contact, placed as in the contact device according to the invention of FIGS. 1 and 2, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Figures 9 and 10, another embodiment of a contact for a contact bridge according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows, schematically, a switch 1 with a contact bridge 2 presenting the contact device. This contact bridge 2 is supported by a spring 3 on a housing 4. The contact bridge 2 rests with its contacts 5,6 on the opposite contacts. 7 and 8 integral with the box. The opposite contacts 7,8 secured to the housing are each connected with a terminal 9.
The contact bridge 2 is controlled by a control rod 10 whose front face has a light
It in which the contact bridge is guided. This control rod 10 palpates a cam disc 12, which is mounted integral with the axis of the switch 13.
In traditional contact devices similar to Figures 1 and 2, all four contacts have a curved contact surface so that the contact bridge 2 rests only at two points.
Because of this, an oscillation along the longitudinal axis of the rigid contact bridge 2 occurs as a result of the forces developed by the current and lead to the development of an unpleasant noise and to increased wear of the contacts. Figures 3 and 4 show a contact 5 'in which a cylinder is pressed into the contact surface so as to obtain a groove 13 extending over the entire contact 5. The radius of this groove 13 is smaller than each bending of the contacts 7 'co-operating with the contact 5', as can be seen in Figure 3. Thus, it is ensured that the contact bridge of a similar contact device according to Figure 1 or 2, in which implements the 4 'contact, rests on three points.
In addition, it is unimportant to know where among the four possible, this contact is implemented, since the three remaining contacts are domed and the groove 13 is arranged in the longitudinal direction of the contact bridge 2, respectively in the direction of the connecting line of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
two opposite contacts 7 and 8. The embodiment according to FIGS. 7 and 8 differs from that of FIGS. 3 and 4, only by the fact that the groove 13 is formed in a contact surface of the contact 5, which is substantially planar, whereas, according to FIGS. 3 and 4, the groove 13 is obtained in a curved surface.
In this way, two ribs 15 extending parallel to each side of the diameter of the contact 5 arise, and against which the associated contact comes to bear.
The embodiment according to Figures 5 and 6 also has a groove 13 which has a V-shaped section, unlike the embodiments which have been discussed so far. In this embodiment, the groove 13, which is rounded both on its bottom and on its edges, extends in its width to the edge of the contact 51. The depth of the groove 13 is dimensioned so that the associated domed contacts rest at two points against the walls of the groove. An additional embodiment of a contact 52 allowing support at two points is shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
In these, the contact 52 has two protrusions 16 in the form of nipples, which, in the contact device according to Figures 1 or 2 are arranged laterally on either side of the longitudinal line of the contact bridge 2 respectively laterally on either side of the connecting line of the circles of the opposite contacts.
Basically, the contact device according to the invention uses only a contact 5, 5 ′, 51, 52, after which the other three remaining contacts are shaped in known manner and have a bending. Essentially, the contact support zone opposite the contacts 5, 5 ', 51, 52, as can be seen in FIG. 2, is located on either side of the longitudinal center line of the contact bridge 2 .
It goes without saying that the present invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and
