<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
Improvements to the oxycutting processes for metallic products.
The present invention relates to an improvement to the oxycutting process for metallic products, in particular continuous casting slabs.
It is known that slabs for continuous casting are obtained by cutting the strand, while the latter is at a temperature
<EMI ID = 1.1>
This cutting operation is generally carried out by flame cutting by means of torches arranged above the strand and movable along a trajectory perpendicular to that of the slabs.
It is formed on this occasion, on the side opposite the beaks of cha-

metal, remains firmly attached to the face of the slab. This burr must be removed before sending the slab to the rolling mill, otherwise it risks either damaging the rolls and consequently giving rise to surface defects in the rolled product, or blocking the fluid recovery channels. work and consequently to cause stops of the rolling mill train.
In addition to various mechanical means, it has already been proposed to eliminate this burr, during or after its formation, either by expelling it by means of a jet of compressed gas, or by depositing on the surface of the slab a substance ensuring the detachment of
burr after sufficient cooling of the slab.
The use of a jet of compressed gas does not however allow complete elimination of the burr; in addition, its implementation is sometimes difficult, because it requires a space which is not always available between the rollers of the conveyor.
The application of a non-stick substance to the place where the burr is formed currently gives variable results depending on the composition of the steel. Indeed, this composition conditions on the one hand, the viscosity of the liquid steel and on the other hand the production and the adhesion of the scale. The liquid steel constituting the burr causes, depending on its viscosity, more or less significant erosion of the layer of deposited substance and can seriously compromise its effectiveness. In addition, the attachment of this substance may be deficient if the scale does not adhere sufficiently to the slab.
In addition, even when the deposit of substance plays its role correctly, the burr does not come off easily until the slab is sufficiently cooled. This can result in unacceptable loss of time and energy
<EMI ID = 3.1>
The subject of the present invention is a method making it possible to remedy this drawback, by ensuring rapid elimination of the flame-cutting burr.
This process is based on the observation that the interface between the burr and the slab generally comprises two zones. In a first zone, the burr is actually welded to the metal of the slab, while in the second zone, it simply adheres to the layer of scale existing on the surface of the slab. It is the weld zone which offers the greatest mechanical resistance to the removal of the burr.
The method of the invention aims to facilitate the removal of a flame-cutting burr, in particular by preventing or counteracting the formation of a weld zone between the burr and the slab.
The process which is the subject of the present invention, in which a slab of continuous casting at a high temperature is subjected to an oxygen cutting operation giving rise to the formation of a burr, is essentially characterized in that the 'a separation surface is created between said burr and the continuous casting slab.
According to a first alternative embodiment of the method of the invention, said burr is subjected, as soon as it is solidified, to sudden cooling by means of at least one jet of a refrigerant.
According to the invention, the refrigerant is preferably water.
The applicant has in fact found that the zone in which the burr simply adheres to the scale of the slab acts as
<EMI ID = 4.1>
<EMI ID = 5.1> pagination of this crack as a result of the contraction caused by the sudden cooling of the burr.
According to a second alternative embodiment of the process of the invention, a suitable material is deposited on the appropriate face of the slab, before flame cutting, or preventing adhesion of the burr to said face.
According to the invention, it is possible to use for this purpose a material reducing the resistance of the weld between the burr and the slab, for example a carbonaceous material having the effect of weakening the area of the weld between the burr and the slab.
According to a second embodiment of this variant of the process of the invention, a layer of a material constituting a thermal barrier is deposited on the face of the slab, before depositing the non-stick substance, between the face of the slab and the non-stick substance, which improves the working conditions of the latter.
In particular, it has been found advantageous to deposit a layer of lime milk, on which the non-stick substance is deposited.
This double layer prevents any contact and therefore any welding between the burr and the slab.
It is then particularly advantageous, still according to the invention, to combine the deposition of the non-stick substance on the slab and the sudden cooling of the burr.
According to a third embodiment of this variant of the invention, the welding of the burr on the face of the slab is prevented, by applying to said face a plate, preferably metallic, on which the burr is deposited and which can then be removed, mechanically.
Although the foregoing description has concerned the removal of the oxygen cutting burrs formed during the cutting of continuous casting slabs, it would not be departing from the scope of the present invention to apply this method to other operations, such as as the longitudinal slitting or cutting of continuous casting slabs, or to other types of products liable to present burrs of a similar nature.
