Abstract

The desulphurising agent comprises a mixt. of a basic material and sawdust pref. of particle size less than 5 (esp. less than 1) mm. The particles of one or both constituents of the mixt. may be coated with a hydrocarbon, e.g. tar, wax or a hydrocarbon polymer, to enhance the reducing properties of the mixt. and to evolve gas for stirring the molten metal. The agent is used for desulphurising liq. pig iron and steel. Costs are reduced by using sawdust instead of expensive reducing agents such as Al, CaC2 or natural gas.

 <EMI ID=2.1>

 <EMI ID=3.1>

 <EMI ID=4.1>

New desulfurizing agent usable in particular in steelworks.

The present invention relates to a new desulphurizing agent usable in steelworks, for the treatment of desulphurization of cast iron and liquid steel.

It is known that the presence of sulfur in steel must generally be limited to a content as low as possible, since this element gives rise to various defects, in particular segregations and inclusions.

Desulfurization of cast iron or liquid steel is the result of a set of chemical reactions between the constituents of the molten metal and an appropriate agent which extracts

a more or less significant part of the sulfur of the metal for

transfer it to the slag.

 <EMI ID = 1.1> and the degree of completion of the physico-chemical reactions between the metal bath and the slag. This last condition can be favored in particular by stirring the bath, which ensures a large contact surface between the reagents.

As regards the nature of the desulfurizing agent, it is known that good desulfurization requires the use of agents of a very basic and reducing nature. This character is generally obtained by mixing basic substances and reducing substances.

For this purpose, compounds of cal-

nates, which combine a highly basic character and good fusibility.

It has also already been proposed to use, as reducing agents, either aluminum or substances such as car-

 <EMI ID = 3.1>

These substances are, however, expensive and strike

importantly, the cost of the desulfurization operation.

The present invention relates to a new desulphurizing agent having the basic and reducing characteristics required, but the cost of which is very much lower than that of the desulphurizing agents known to date.

The desulfurizing agent, object of the present invention, which is composed of a basic substance in admixture with a reducing substance, is characterized in that the reducing substance consists essentially of wood dust.

According to the invention, the wood dust has a particle size of less than 5 mm, and preferably less than 1 mm.

Also according to the invention, the wood dust is advantageously constituted by sawdust, preferably calibrated.

Still according to the invention, the desulfurizing agent is in the form of an intimate mixture of a basic pulverulent substance and wood dust.

 <EMI ID = 4.1>

one of the constituents of the mixture is coated with a hydrocarbon substance, for example tar, wax or a hydrocarbon polymer.

This accentuates the reducing nature of the mixture, by increasing the amount of carbon it contains.

Finally, the hydrocarbon coating burns in contact with the metal bath, giving off gases which ensure a certain mixing of the bath and favor the completion of the chemical reactions.

The desulphurizing agent according to the invention has a significantly lower cost than that of the agents currently used, and it provides an advantageous recovery of a by-product.
