<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>

<EMI ID=16.1>
"Method and apparatus for identifying the place of change of state of a part of an electrical circuit" "Method and apparatus for identifying the place of change of state of a part of an electrical circuit"
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for identifying the place of change of state of a part of an electrical circuit and, more particularly but not exclusively, it relates to a method and an apparatus for identifying of the part of a protection circuit which has been caused to change state.
In the protection circuits used
in systems - burglary protection and fire and theft warning systems with intrusion detection and warning devices and fire and theft alerts and detectors capable of providing warning indication of any abnormal phenomenon such as penetration
heat, smoke or fire due to a change of state of a device, it was not previously possible when several detection devices were incorporated in the protection circuit, to easily identify which particular detection device has had to change state, without installing an expensive control device or by wiring each detector device separately to the control device.
An object of the present invention is to provide a method and an apparatus for identifying the
place in the electrical circuit of a part of this circuit which has been caused to change state.
According to one aspect of the invention, an electrical circuit arrangement is provided comprising
a multiplicity of two-state devices connected to it, each of them occupying a particular position in the circuit and each of them offering an impedance element associated with it so that a predetermined value of the impedance either present in the circuit when all the aforementioned two-state devices are in a first state and an impedance value different from this predetermined value is present when any of the aforementioned two-state devices is caused to change by one first state to a second, as well as means for comparing a parameter of the circuit with a reference parameter to give an indication of the identity of any two-state device which has passed from the first state to the second and to identify the position of the device having changed state in the circuit.
The advantages of the invention are numerous. A particular advantage is that it is possible to locate a part of an electrical circuit which has changed state. Consequently, a component which has changed state due to a change in its environment, a defective component or a component that has failed, can be easily identified and corrective measures can be taken as necessary, or in the event of a component defect, the latter may be replaced.
When the method and the apparatus are used in a security circuit comprising a multiplicity of intrusion detection devices, the situation of a device which has changed state following for example the detection of an intruder, can be identified immediately even when devices are wired in series. Likewise, defective or faulty devices can be immediately identified.
Another advantage of the invention is to allow serial wiring of intrusion detection devices or switches in a security circuit, while still allowing the identification of each individual device. This leads to a considerable simplification of the installation of the devices and also greatly reduces the installation and wiring costs.
Another advantage of the invention is to allow remote control of the security circuit, for example using a telephone line or the like.
In addition, when the anti-intrusion devices are mounted for example on doors or windows, if a memory is added to the circuit, this memory can be used to record and memorize the moments when the doors and windows have been opened and closed . In fact, the opening and closing of each door can be controlled individually and separately.
An additional advantage of the invention is to allow the location of any bista-ble device in an electrical circuit, whether this device is
or not wired in series with others.
It is not only beneficial to identify
the particular place where a circuit device has changed state, but it would be good not only to identify the device having changed state, but also to identify a device that has failed or broken down and to continue to use the circuit containing this defective or faulty device.
According to another aspect of the invention, an electrical circuit arrangement is provided comprising
a multiplicity of two-state devices connected to it, each of them occupying a particular position in the circuit and each of them offering an impedance element associated with it so that a predetermined impedance value is present in the circuit when all the aforementioned two-state devices occupy a first state and an impedance value different from this predetermined value is present when any of the aforementioned two-state devices is brought to pass from a first state to a second, as well as means for comparing a parameter of the circuit with a reference parameter to give an indication of the identity of any two-state device which has passed from the aforementioned first state to the second and to identify the position of this device having changed state in the circuit,
these two-state devices being incorporated in a multi-terminal network, and
control means capable of operating in accordance with
a multiplicity of modes in order to control these two-state devices by means of different combinations of terminal pairs of this network, to allow not only to identify the particular device which has changed state and to locate its position , but also to allow the identification of devices that have failed or are faulty while using the circuit without taking into account the fault or failure of this device whatsoever.
The advantages of this feature of the invention are that when one of the two-state devices becomes defective or breaks down, it allows control of the remaining devices.
In one embodiment of the invention, each of the above impedance elements is a resistor.
The advantage of using resistors is that direct current can be used to control
the circuit. This leads to a relatively inexpensive means of controlling the circuit.
In another embodiment of the invention, each of the impedance elements is a diode, a Zener diode, a transistor or other similar semiconductor.
The advantage of using diodes is to make the circuit stable.
In one embodiment of the invention, the electrical circuit comprises a multiplicity of two-state devices and associated resistances, means for applying an electromotive force to the circuit, other means for measuring the current flowing in the circuit, and means for comparing the current in the circuit with a reference current so as to give an indication of a change of state of any of the two-state devices.
The advantages of this characteristic of the invention lie in that it allows a relatively inexpensive means of controlling the circuit.
In another embodiment of the invention, the aforementioned two-state devices are security detection devices having a rest state and a second state in which the devices
are brought in response to the onset of a situation
abnormal security.
The advantage of this characteristic of the invention is that it allows its application to a circuit
electrical security to control a building or the like and to allow easy identification of an intrusion detection device when it changes state.
Preferably, the means intended to compare a parameter of the circuit with a reference parameter comprise a comparator device responding to the current flowing in the circuit and offering a value in accordance with the resistance of the circuit, while also responding to a reference current derived from '' a resistance channel corresponding to the associated resistances
to the two-state devices mentioned above, this reference current being applied to the comparator device via a scanning circuit and a bistable state device, one output of which is connected to an input of the comparator device, the arrangement being
such that when there is an identity between the measured current and the reference current, an output signal is produced by the comparator device in order to identify any two-state device which has changed state.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
the invention is to make possible an inexpensive device for controlling the circuits.
Advantageously, an output signal from the circuit is applied via the scanning circuit to a frequency measuring device arranged so as to supply a signal to an audible and / or visual warning indicator, via another scanning circuit such that if the signal frequency is within certain predetermined limits, an indication of the particular two-state device which has changed state is given by this visual and / or audible indicator.
The advantages of this characteristic of the invention are to allow the immediate identification of a device in the electrical circuit which has changed state, and to allow the emission of an alert only when the device vibrates within certain predetermined limits. , thereby minimizing the risk of false alarms.
In yet another embodiment of the invention, the two-state devices include a first series of devices connected by a first conductor to a first terminal and a second series of devices connected by a second conductor to a second terminal, the respective resistors of the two-state devices being connected between the first
and second conductors, each conductor comprising an additional terminal connected jointly with the first and second aforementioned terminals to respective first contacts of a switching unit, second contacts of the latter being connected to the control means capable of operating in a multiplicity of modes to control the first and second series of devices through different combinations of pairs of the first and second terminals as well as additional terminals to identify any device that has changed state and any device that has failed or failed .
The advantage of this characteristic of the invention is that while allowing the identification of any one of several devices or switches when the device or switch has changed state, it also makes it possible to control the devices or switches remaining after one or more of them have changed status or have failed.
Advantageously, the control means comprise a microprocessor connected to said first and second terminals as well as to the additional terminal, via the first and second contacts.

In another embodiment of the invention, the contacts of the switching unit are connected to the control means by means of respective analog-digital converters, so that signals on the first and second conductors present on any pair of the first and second terminals as well as additional terminals are transformed into digital signals intended to be offered to the control means.

Preferably, a visual display device is connected to an output of the control means, in order to give a visual indication of any defective device and the position in the circuit of any device that has changed state.
The advantage of this characteristic of the invention is to allow easy identification of the device which has changed state.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description below, given by way of nonlimiting example and with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a circuit diagram of an electrical protection system comprising means for identifying the location of any part of the system undergoing a change of state. Figure 2 is a circuit diagram of another embodiment of the invention. Figure 3 is a circuit diagram of another embodiment of the invention. Figure 4 is a circuit diagram of yet another embodiment of the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, there is shown an electrical protection circuit using several vibration sensitive devices arranged to change state in response to the detection of a vibration in a structure or a part of the structure, such as a window or door of a building, with which the vibration detection device is associated. The protective circuit designated by the reference A comprises a pair of input terminals
1, to which must be connected a
<EMI ID = 2.1>
is connected to terminals 1, 1 ', for a defined purpose below. The protection circuit includes six vibration detection devices 2 to 7, inclusive, for detecting vibrations in a window, door or any other structure of a building, and which can be similar to the detection devices described in a British patent. n [deg.] 2,000,377. Vibration detection devices 2 to 7 are connected in series
as illustrated and for each device 2 to 7
<EMI ID = 3.1>
which is connected between an output terminal 8 of each device and a grounded line 9. each device has an input terminal 10 connected to the output terminal 8 of the immediately adjacent device, so that the devices 2 to 7 are in fact connected in series.
The arrangement is such that the resistance of the protection circuit A between the terminals 1, the varies
depending on the particular vibration detection device that changes state. Each of the resist-
<EMI ID = 4.1>
establishing a path for the current through the protection circuit, if the vibration detection device 2 changes state.
The control circuit B comprises a control device 11 intended to identify the place in the protection circuit A of any device 2 to 7 which undergoes a change of state. The control circuit
B also includes a control device 12 intended to control the vibration frequency of any of the vibration detection devices 2 to 7 and if the frequency is within certain predetermined limits, the device 12 causes the excitation of a relay 21 of a visual or audible warning device (not shown) in order to give an alert indication.
The control device 11 comprises means
(not shown) for the application of an electromotive force, typically with a value of 6 volts, at the input terminals 1, l ′ of the protection circuit A. A comparator 13 is provided with a pair of inputs , one of which is connected to protection circuit A and the other to a reference circuit 14, via a bistable state device 15. Comparator 13 compares the current flowing in protection circuit A with a reference current generated by the device 14 and which includes a resistance bank 16 corresponding to
<EMI ID = 5.1>
reference current is applied via a scanning circuit 17 and the bistable device 15, to an input of the comparator 13.
While the scanning circuit 17 scans or explores the resistors 16 for a correspondence between the current flowing in the protection circuit A and
the instantaneous reference current, the particular vibration detection device which has changed state
is identified by the control circuit 12. The signal from the protection circuit A is sent from the scanning circuit 17 to a multiplex scanning unit 18,
through respective integrating circuits
19 which provide a signal indicating the frequency of the signal. If the signal is within certain predetermined limits, it is transmitted to the multiplex scanning unit 18 and an output signal from the latter causes a relay 21 to be energized while
being applied to the digital display device 20, so that a visible indication is given of the particular vibration detection device 2 to 7 which has changed state.
When the vibration detection devices 2 to 7 are in their quiescent state, a current will flow through all the devices and the resistance
<EMI ID = 6.1>
<EMI ID = 7.1>
If, for example, the vibration detection device 5 starts to vibrate and cuts off the flow of current in the protection circuit 1, the part of the circuit A situated beyond this device 5 is isolated and the device 5 itself will be in an open circuit state.
Consequently, the resistance of the protection circuit A controlled by the control circuit B is:
<EMI ID = 8.1>
The controlled resistance will clearly indicate that it is the vibration detection device 5 which has passed from a state of rest to an open circuit state and the display device 20 will indicate in digital form, the device 5.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIG. 2, the protection circuit A of FIG. 1 is provided, in addition to the vibration detection devices, with a respective anti-vibration device, all of these devices being housed in a unit.
Thus, with reference to FIG. 2, five vibration detection devices connected in series are indicated in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, with the input terminals
<EMI ID = 9.1>
respectively, between the output terminals of devices 2 to 6 and line 29. In addition to the vibration detection devices 2 to 6, anti-violation devices 30 to 34 are provided. The vibration detection devices 2 to 6 in addition to anti-violation devices
30 to 34 are connected in series and the input terminals
1, the are arranged so that an electromotive force can be applied to the protection circuit A, so that the resistance of the circuit can be measured.
In addition to the input terminals 1, the, terminals
35, 36 are provided in loops 37, 38 containing
the vibration detection devices 2 to 6 and the anti-violation devices 30 to 34, respectively. The additional terminals make it possible to measure the resistance of the circuit from one or the other end of the loops, in the case of the change of state of one of the vibration detection devices 2 to 6 or of the one of the anti-violation devices 30 to 34.
A microprocessor 39 is connected to the terminals
<EMI ID = 10.1>
bilateral switch 40 and connections 41. Terminals 1, 1 and 35, 36 are also connected via the bilateral switch unit 40, to four respective analog-digital converters
42, the outputs of which are connected to respective terminals of the microprocessor 39. The analog-digital converters 42 make it possible to transform signals coming from the respective terminals 1, l 'and 35,
36 into digital signals for the microprocessor 39. A display board (not shown) is connected to an output of the microprocessor 39, in order to give a visual indication of the fact that one of the devices
vibration detection 2 to 6 or one of the anti-violation devices 30 to 34 has or has not changed state or is defective, in order to allow the identification of the particular device which has changed state or is defective.
During operation, when it is necessary to lock a building for the night, the protection circuit is preset by placing each of the vibration detection devices in a first state and the microprocessor 39 being set for a mode applying an electromotive force to the terminals d 'entry 1, 1'. Yes
any of the vibration detection devices 2 to 6 or the anti-violation devices 30 to 34 is defective, there will be a circuit continuity solution and the microprocessor 39 will measure
<EMI ID = 11.1>
the resistance immediately preceding the defective component, and thus the latter will be immediately identified.
If, for example, the defective component is the vibration detector 4, the microprocessor 39 will then be able, by carrying out a check at terminals 1, 1 ′, to check the vibration detection devices 2 and 3 and the anti-violation devices 30,
31. To allow control of the remaining devices 5, 6 and 33, 34, the microprocessor 39 is placed in a mode allowing control at terminals 35, l ', as well as at terminals 1, 1'.
By checking at terminals 35, l ', you will realize that the microprocessor will detect resistors R6 and R5. Thus, if a fault occurs in the devices 5, 6 or 33, 34, this will be immediately detected by the microprocessor.
The microprocessor can be placed in another mode for control at terminals 1 and 36, so that if the anti-violation device 32 should become defective, this defect will be easily detected and identified.
The microprocessor can also be placed in another mode for control at terminals 35, 36, in addition to any of the modes already described. An advantage of control at all terminals is that a short circuit in any of the lines can also be easily identified and its position easily located.
Referring now to Figure 3, we
illustrated an electrical protection circuit according to yet another embodiment of the invention, this circuit being practically similar to that described with reference to FIG. 1, with the exception of the devices 2 to 7 in this form of embodiment of the invention are intrusion detection devices, equipped with magnetic reed switches which can, for example, be mounted on doors, windows or the like, so that by opening a window, the circuit through the reed switch is open. In this case, the integrator circuits 19 are redundant. However, if it is desired to replace any of the devices 2 to 7 with a vibration detection device, this can easily be done and the integrator would then be implemented.
The operation of this circuit is practically similar to that described with reference to FIG. 1. For example, when the reed switch 5 opens, the part of the circuit located beyond this switch
is isolated. Consequently, the resistance of the protection circuit A controlled by the control circuit B is:
<EMI ID = 12.1>
Thus, the open circuit device 5 will be immediately identified and this information will be displayed on the digital display device 20. In addition, the relay 21 will trigger an alert.
FIG. 4 illustrates an electrical protection circuit which is again practically similar to that of FIG. 1. In the present case, the devices 2 to 7 are vibration detection devices
<EMI ID = 13.1>
ble to that of the resistors of FIG. 1.
Although the invention has been described with particular reference to a protection circuit comprising a multiplicity of vibration detection devices, it will be appreciated that other types
detection devices can be used, for example foil switches for detecting the breakage of a window or the like, or infrared or ultrasonic intrusion detectors. Likewise, the detection devices can be smoke or fire detection devices. In fact, a combination of these devices in series could be used in a single circuit.
In addition, the protection circuit may use devices other than switches, such as for example lamps, transistors or the like, and the invention is not limited to equipment.
of security. In addition, other impedance elements
<EMI ID = 14.1>
Could be implemented, for example Zener diodes, transistors or other semiconductor devices, or in fact any other device offering an appropriate impedance.
Instead of using a microprocessor
and associated components to control the electrical circuit, other suitable means can be used and in fact one of these means is described in a patent application in Ireland n [deg.] 225/81.
In addition, it is envisaged that a memory can be incorporated in circuit B, in which case the memory can be used to record and memorize
<EMI ID = 15.1>
have been activated or have become defective. In fact, when devices are mounted on doors or windows, the opening and closing of each
<EMI ID = 16.1>
reement.
In addition, it is envisaged that circuit B can be connected to a telephone line to allow remote control of the circuit.
It should be understood that the present invention is in no way limited to the above embodiments and that many modifications can
be made without departing from the scope of this patent.
