Improvements to continuous heat treatment processes for steel sheets.
The present invention relates to improvements to the continuous heat treatment methods for steel sheets, with a view to producing in particular steel sheets for stamping or steel sheets for resistance.
The applicant has already recommended a process for continuous thermal treatment of thin steel sheets, comprising a rapid cooling phase by immersion in a water bath at a temperature above 75 [deg.] C, followed by a phase of aging.
This process has the advantage of ensuring good homogeneity of the properties of the steel and makes it possible to manufacture sheets for deep drawing and medium strength.
On the other hand, this process makes it possible to rigorously control the cooling practiced and optionally the interrupt to the overaging temperature, in order to save the energy of heating the sheet up to the overaging temperature.
In addition, the heat contained in the sheet is transformed into vapor during the immersion of this sheet in the cooling bath and this steam is easily reusable.
Furthermore, the applicant has also proposed, according to Belgian patent n [deg.] 835,666, another rapid cooling process under water jet sprayed or not, which allows to produce not only the same qualities of steel, but in plus very high strength steels, with a very low cost in alloying elements.
However, this latter method does not make it possible to recover energy or to interrupt the rapid cooling to the overaging temperature.
In order to take advantage of the advantages presented by these two methods and to minimize their disadvantages, the applicant has developed a continuous heat treatment method, in which the steel sheets are subjected to a rapid cooling operation. comprising a phase of spraying a refrigerant fluid onto the surface of the sheet, followed by a phase of immersion in an aqueous bath at a temperature above 75 [deg.] C.
The conditions of the rapid cooling phase can be modified, in the context of this latter process, by adjusting the temperature of the refrigerant fluid sprayed onto the sheet before immersion in the aqueous bath. Advantageously, a cooling fluid consisting of a water / steam mist is sprayed onto the sheet and the temperature of this mist is adjusted by modifying the temperature of the water and / or the other of the constituents and preferably that of the water <EMI ID = 1.1>
produced in the mist-forming device.
Given the complexity of the phenomena and the impossibility of maintaining rigorously constant processing conditions (sheet thickness, surface condition, temperature, etc.), the steel sheets may still have small flatness defects such as by example of waves on banks, worms, etc ...
The present invention relates to a method making it possible to reduce these latter drawbacks significantly.
This invention is based on the unexpected observation that it is possible to reduce the flatness defects mentioned above by carrying out the rapid cooling operation in two stages: a first during which the sheet is immersed in a tank filled with water hot and a second during which a cooling fluid projection is carried out.
Consequently, the improvements to the heat treatment methods which are the subject of the present invention, methods in which the steel sheets are subjected to a rapid cooling operation, are essentially characterized by
that this cooling operation is divided into two distinct consecutive stages: the first consisting of at least immersion of the sheets in an aqueous bath at a temperature above 75 [deg.] C, the second consisting of a projection of a fluid refrigerant.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the first step of the rapid cooling operation consists of immersing the sheets in an aqueous bath
at a temperature above 75 [deg.] C, immediately followed by a spray of coolant.

According to another embodiment of the invention, the rapid cooling of the sheet is carried out in the two stages, so that the temperatures at the inlet and at the outlet are as follows: <EMI ID = 6.1> outlet: 500 [ deg.] C / 400 [deg.] C
- second step: input: 500 [deg.] C / 400 [deg.] C output: 150 [deg.] C / 60 [deg.] C.
It has proved advantageous, according to the invention, to supply the devices for projecting coolant with water.
at a temperature above 70 [deg.] C, during the first stage.
According to the invention, the cooling fluid projection devices are supplied with water at a temperature above 70 [deg.] C, also during the second step.
According to a variant of the invention, the devices for projecting the coolant are supplied with water at a temperature

ambient during the second stage.
Also according to the invention, the water flow rate in liters / sec. in the projection device of the first phase is kept equal to the value given by the following expression:

The setting of the quenching duration in the first step can be advantageously, according to the invention, by modifying the water level.
\ Also according to the invention, the two stages are carried out in two separate tanks and the water is collected separately.
According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the complete heat treatment comprises the following operations:
the sheet is heated to a temperature higher than the recrystallization temperature of the steel,
- it is kept at this temperature for a period greater than 30 seconds,
- it is subjected to a rapid cooling operation comprising a phase of immersion in an aqueous bath and a phase of spraying a cooling fluid,
- optionally, the sheet is then subjected to an overaging operation for a duration greater than 20 seconds.
- the final cooling of the sheet is ensured. Figure 1 attached hereto is given by way of nonlimiting example and represents an embodiment of a rapid-cooling installation making it possible to implement the method described above.
According to this figure, the sheet to be cooled rapidly is identified at 1 and moves in the direction indicated by the arrow 2.

At the upper end of the tank on the upward trajectory of the sheet is located a ramp 8 of nozzles intended to project a mist composed of a fine spray of water in a gas before the sheet leaves the tank 5.
