<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
Les auteurs de la présente invention ont maintenant mis au point un procédé pour la préparation de ces sulfinates, qui peut être réalisé en présence d'eau, permettant l'utilisation des acides sulfiniques sous forme d'un gâteau de filtre ./ (ou tourteau) aqueux, et qui fournit les sulfinates avec une pureté suffisante pour pouvoir les utiliser directement dans;
des systèmes de copiage sensibles à la pression.
Par conséquent, la présente invention fournit un

Process for the preparation of sulfinates of benzhydrol compounds.
The present invention relates to the preparation of sulfinates of benzhydrol compounds which are chromogens and can be used in pressure sensitive copying systems.
A process for the preparation of 4,4'diaminobenzhydrol sulfinates by reaction of the hydrol with an acid
<EMI ID = 1.1>
highly colored acetate. The desired tallow acid is added and the reaction product is poured into cold water or a solution of cold ammonia to precipitate the water-insoluble hydrol sulfinate. The precipitate
is collected, washed with water and dried. Before this material can be used satisfactorily in pressure-sensitive copying systems, it must be purified to remove impurities normally present in the hydrol. For example, 4,4'-bis- (dimethylamino) benzhydrol (hydrol
de Michler) may contain ^ when prepared by
<EMI ID = 2.1>
methane, impurities such as unreacted methane base, tetramethylbenzidine, the corresponding acetone
(Michler’s ketone) and hydrol ether.
A similar preparation for these sulfinic compounds has been described (European patent application n [deg.] 0,005,251) in which the precipitation of these impurities is eliminated by carrying out the reaction in an organic solvent and using an organic carboxylic acid and the absence of water.
Using large amounts of organic carboxylic acids can be expensive and the need to remove water from the reaction system and reagents further complicates the process.
The authors of the present invention have now developed a process for the preparation of these sulfinates, which can be carried out in the presence of water, allowing the use of sulfinic acids in the form of a filter cake ./ (or cake ) aqueous, and which provides the sulfinates with sufficient purity to be able to use them directly in;
pressure sensitive copying systems.
Therefore, the present invention provides a

A compound of formula (2b) is preferably used as the starting compound. This preferably has the formula:

in which Y1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or in particular the phenyl group or a phenyl group substituted by halo, nitro or hydroxyl radicals,

The reaction of a compound of formula (4) with a compound of formula (5) gives a compound of formula:
<EMI ID = 36.1>
The process according to the present invention is particularly suitable for the preparation of Hydrol sulfinates

or ethylene glycol.
Suitable mineral acids which can be used include hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
Suitable organic acids include paratoluenesulfonic, benzenesulfonic, trichloroacetic acids.
The reaction can be carried out at a temperature

The resulting product can be isolated by filtering the reaction mass. If desired, the reaction mass can be diluted with water and / or neutralized with ammonia before filtering it. This reaction can be carried out between ordinary temperature and 100 [deg.] C, optionally in the presence of an organic solvent such as an alcohol, for example methanol or isopropanol.
Suitable acids include hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric, monochloracetic, dichloracetic or trichloracetic, benzenesulfonic or para-toluenesulfonic acids.
For example, the paradimethylaminobenzaldehyde of formula (8) can be reacted with urea and N, N-dimethyl-

following reaction scheme:
<EMI ID = 45.1>
Generally, a mixture of the compound of formula (9) and the compound of formula:
<EMI ID = 46.1>
is obtained.
The weight ratio of the compound of formula (9) to the compound of formula (9a) is advantageously between 1: 9 and 9: 1, preferably between 1: 2 and 2: 1.
It is preferred to use an excess of the active hydrogen compound and then to remove the excess by filtration or by steam entrainment before the reaction with the sulfinic acid compound. The urea derivative is obtained in an easily filterable form and does not need to be recrystallized from an organic solvent.
fi <EMI ID = 47.1>
it is not always necessary to isolate the aldehyde before reacting it with urea and with the active hydrogen compound.
The compounds of formula (2b) can also be prepared by reacting the urea derivative of formula (7) under acidic conditions, optionally in the presence of an organic solvent such as an alcohol or a ketone, for example the methanol, isopropanol or acetone, with a benzydrol of formula:
<EMI ID = 48.1>

each having 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
Sufficient amounts of ben-

Suitable acids include hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric, formic, monochloroacetic, dichloroacetic, trichloroacetic, benzenesulfonic, paratoluenesulfonic or oxalic acids. Mineral acids are preferred for price reasons.
The compound of formula (2b) is then reacted

or a salt thereof, to obtain the compounds of formula
(1).
Since the compounds of formula (2a) and (2b) can be easily isolated from the reaction mixture, in the crystallized form, the resulting compounds of formula (1) can be obtained in a very pure state.
The present invention is illustrated by the following descriptive and nonlimiting examples in which the percentages are expressed by weight unless otherwise indicated.
