<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=16.1>

The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a laminated sheet and an apparatus for its implementation.
We know that cross laminates formed of films
of uniaxially oriented crystalline polymers generally offer a highly advantageous combination of different resistance properties, the most surprising of which is the resistance to
propagation of the tearing (see patent n [deg.] 3,322,613 of the United
United States of America), especially when the bond between the layers is sufficiently weak that during tearing, due
at an incision, the layers delaminate around the notch.
Consequently, they cleave or spread in different directions and the notch effect disappears, this being called "branching effect". Sheets of this type are particularly useful for various very severe applications such as
as tarpaulin substitutes, cover sheets,
very resistant bags and packaging film.
The most advantageous method of manufacturing a
sheet of the aforementioned type is described in the British patent
n [deg.] 816.607 and consists in strongly orienting the molecules of a
tubular film in its longitudinal direction, to cut it heli-
coidially and to unfold it into a flat film oriented in
bias (for example, 45 [deg.]) and to be applied continuously thereafter
this film over a similarly produced flat film.
at the same time as the respective directions of orientation are arranged
according to a crisscross relationship. We know that, for a given thickness, the resistance to the propagation of tearing is
significantly increased using three layers with three
different directions of orientation, determined, for example, by applying a film oriented longitudinally on two films
biased, as mentioned above.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
resulting product) is that it is practically impossible to actually produce a thin film, so that the economic advantage of producing a high strength, but light weight film is not fully achieved. In practice, the lowest weight of each layer that can be obtained by laminating and cutting in a spiral, is around 30 g / m <2>. So, for a two-layer laminate, the lower limit is around
60 g / m <2>, while for a three-layer laminate (which is mentioned above and which is necessary for the correct use of
<EMI ID = 2.1>
A second drawback is the practical limitation of the width caused by the rotation of the coils and of the robust mechanical parts in connection with the spiral cut. In general, the width is limited to about 1.5 - 2 m.
A third drawback relates to certain energy absorption values for cross laminates. Relatively low energy absorption was observed for the high speed tear (Elmendorf tear test) and the high and low speed tensile test
<EMI ID = 3.1>
It appears that the very anisotropic nature of the layers is disadvantageous. If, for example, a two-ply cross laminate of this type is stretched parallel to the direction of orientation of one of the layers, the elastic limit and elongation at break are in principle determined by this layer.
More prior tests to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks and to have a less expensive method of manufacturing a product having similar or analogous properties are described in British patent n [deg.] 1,261,397. In this patent, a method is disclosed which produces a crisscross structure by means of a matrix with rotating parts, while forming, in the same matrix, a soft and weaker middle zone by co-extrusion. The method consists in co-extruding several concentric or almost concentric layers based on a crystalline polymer, alternating with layers of a polymer
<EMI ID = 4.1>
by means of teeth arranged in rows and fixed on the cylindrical walls of the matrix, while projecting internally from the concave wall surface and externally from the convex wall surface. The parts of the matrix are rotated in opposite directions and the layers are thus divided in accordance with the left helices close to one surface of the sheet and the right helices close to the other surface of this sheet. Combing can be done in the middle of the film or be limited to parts close to surfaces. The co-extrusion of the polymers in front of the combing zone is suitable for determining a median, soft and weak zone.
The film extruded by this process can be considered to be a non-oriented material. However, the alternating rigid layers of a "first polymer" and the soft layers of a "second polymer", divided into filaments by the teeth in a linear fashion, communicate, with each half of the sheet, a tendency to cleave or spread in one direction, and since the linear modes at the two surfaces intersect each other and a tendency to delaminate is expected, a tearing interruption effect is exerted, which is analogous to the "branching" effect of a true cross laminate.
The aforementioned patent further proposes to biaxially lengthen the laminate under conditions such that instead of forming biaxially oriented layers, the molecular orientation is generally uniaxial in each layer, the directions of orientation of the different layers intersecting each other. In order to obtain this uniaxial orientation, the second material must be
<EMI ID = 5.1>
due or semi-melted, when the first material is solid, and the filaments of this first material must be kept straight by a biaxial tension.
Although the above method in principle solves the problems of obtaining a smaller thickness and a larger width for cross laminates, certain important difficulties have been observed in the course of subsequent technical developments. It has been confirmed that the extrusion process is industrially feasible for the production of a non-oriented film with high resistance to the propagation of tearing, but with low impact resistance due to the lack of orientation.
However, significant drawbacks have been observed in connection with a subsequent biaxial lengthening. As also indicated in the aforementioned patent, a relatively large number of rows of teeth must be used in the extrusion die in order to determine the fineness of fibers necessary for the elongation system.
This however makes it difficult to maintain the matrix and causes frequent "suspensions" of polymeric pieces between the teeth. In addition, the interaction between the teeth of one half of the matrix and those of the other half makes it necessary to use excessive amounts of soft middle layer material or to limit combing to the two surface areas. relatively thin of the leaf. In addition, it is very difficult to establish and maintain the biaxial elongation conditions necessary for obtaining a molecular orientation in general uniaXial as described.
According to the invention, a method of manufacturing a laminate of at least two layers consists in rotating one relative to the other, in a circular co-extrusion die provided with an outlet slot, at least two concentric tubular layers each comprising a flow or a network of .. flow of molten polymeric material and to be simultaneously extended hot <EMI ID = 6.1> subsequently the layers in the matrix immediately before their passage through the outlet slot for form a laminate whose directions of hot elongation cross each other, and to solidify the laminate while retaining the cross structure elongated hot, the bond of the solidified laminate being sufficiently weak to allow local delamination of the film when the laminate is torn.
Preferably, the opposite sides of the outlet slot through which the laminate is extruded, rotate relative to each other, which leads to subjecting the laminate to shear during extrusion.
The tubular layers preferably consist of a dispersion of a polymer in a polymer matrix, so as to produce, by hot stretching, a grain of polymer along the direction of hot stretching, as described in detail in British Patent No. [deg.] 1,526,722. Thus, as explained in the latter, it is possible to obtain a fibrillar granular structure having a predominant orientation of possibility of cleavage after the solidification of the laminate into a film.
In the process of the invention, the two layers can
<EMI ID = 7.1>
same angular speed.
One method for obtaining the desired weak bond is to form layers of polymers which adhere poorly to each other. Another method involves co-extruding a polymer between the layers to control the adhesive strength, the polymer being extruded in strips, for example, or
being interrupted in another way. The adhesion control polymer may be an elastomer having poor adhesion to the polymeric material or to the materials which form the tubular layers.
Each layer can be a network of streams which meet <EMI ID = 8.1>
hot can be carried out by passing the material of this flow network through a row of partitions, for example, as
<EMI ID = 9.1>
Hot stretching can be performed by reducing the thickness of the molten tubular layer during extrusion.
Before joining together the layers whose directions of elongation cross each other, each layer may be formed in itself of two or more other layers, in particular by passing two or more tubular layers of a different polymer material jointly through a part. of common matrix put into rotation and by co-extruding them in a common chamber of the same piece of matrix in rotation, which thus gives a tubular layer composed in rotation. This process is shown in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, where the co-extrusion into the common die part in rotation takes place on a circular edge.
Preferably, the laminate after solidification is biaxially elongated in the solid state in at least two separate stages, each of which is essentially unidirectional. This extension can be carried out in substance at ambient temperature. In general, it consists in lengthening the sheet until a formation of substantially longitudinal folds, temporarily distributed only, by applying pressure along the lines extending in subtance in the longitudinal direction of the sheet, for example by passing grooved cylinders through which the grooves are parallel or form a small angle relative to the direction of the machine. This method of lengthening the extrudate is described and claimed in patent n [deg.] 1,526,724 and, as mentioned in
<EMI ID = 10.1>
transverse lengthening is completed, the longitudinal elongation can be carried out, a substantial transverse contraction preferably being carried out during the longitudinal elongation.
The polymeric material of the tubular flows can consist mainly of a polyolefin. Preferably, at least one of the tubular flows mainly comprises a polypropylene
<EMI ID = 11.1>
mother to control the strength of the bond is co-extruded between the tubular flows, a suitable material is ethylene-propylene rubber.
For more details on the biaxial elongation operations, on the polymeric materials which can be used for the layers and on the properties of the products which can be obtained according to the process of the invention, reference should be made to the patents mentioned above. -above.
The invention relates not only to the method described above, but also to the apparatus for its implementation when a weak bond is produced by co-extrusion of a polymer between the layers. This device comprises a circular co-extrusion die provided with an outlet slot, a member for bringing towards the slot, at least two concentric tubular layers each comprising a stream or a network of streams of molten polymer material, a member for making rotate the layers in relation to each other in the matrix and to extend hot simultaneously

extrude a polymer between the layers in order to control the resistance of adhesion, and a member for bonding the layers in the matrix, the directions of hot elongations crossing each other, immediately before their passage through the exit slot. Preferably, the members for rotating the layers relatively to each other in the matrix are members for rotating the opposite sides of the outlet slot relative to each other.

referring to the attached drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a section through an extrusion die according to the invention; 2 shows, in perspective view (where sections are moved), the principle of an extrusion die according to the invention and having two outlet slots rotating in opposite directions and members for extruding two layers through each slot; Figure 3 is a manufacturing line of a preferred cold stretching process;
j Figure 4 is a detail of the "grooved cylinders" which perform the transverse elongation in uneven areas called "streaks"; Figure 5 is a schematic representation, on an enlarged scale, of the mode of streaks and their orientation in an elongated film transversely, according to the production line of Figure 3; and Figure 6 is a cross section on an enlarged scale of the film of Figure 5, as actually viewed under a microscope; however, for clarity, the thickness is twice the width.
The extrusion die reproduced in FIG. 1 is an example of a die which can be used and in which two dispersions (polymer in polymer) are extruded in a common receiving chamber through two rows of partitions which rotate in opposite directions opposites. The two dispersion streams 1 and
2 are brought by inlet ducts from the lower part of the matrix to the annular ducts 4 and 5 of the two walls of the annular track 6 where the two rings 7 and 8 are moved in opposite directions by control members, by example, by teeth and cogwheels (not shown). Both
<EMI ID = 14.1>
which are formed two rows of openings 11 and 12 through which the two dispersions are extruded into the receiving chamber 15 formed by the two parts 13 and 14 and ending in an outlet slot 16. For clarity, the partitions 9 and
10 extend radially as shown, but are actually arranged angularly with respect to the radial direction to prevent the formation of matrix lines in the extruded sheet. Thanks to the extrusion through the two rotary rings 7 and 8, the two dispersions are each attenuated and thus acquire a fibrillar morphology, as well as a sense of possibility of cleavage, as mentioned above. The two attenuated flow networks are then brought together in the receiving chamber 15 to form a laminate with a crisscrossed fibrous morphology.
The thickness of this laminate is reduced by passing through the outlet slot 16 and then by a normal packing and blowing operation. Then, the film is stretched in both longitudinal and transverse directions at a relatively low temperature. As a result of the two different fiber directions, the two semi-parts of the film show tendencies to cleave in different directions during tearing. The materials from which the two semi-parts are formed are chosen so that they weakly adhere to one another. Therefore, the material delaminates in a small area around the incision, from which the tearing takes place, and this eliminates the notch effect.
The matrix shown in FIG. 2 is made up of four main parts, namely a fixed intake part 17 for the circular distribution of the polymers, as explained above, and a fixed support part 18 which here supports the two rotary parts 19 and 20 forming an outlet orifice 21. The polymer mixtures A and B are brought to the inlet part
17 where they are distributed in concentric circular flows. To me-
<EMI ID = 15.1>
which one or two extruders can be used. The mixture B is extruded through the annular duct 24. For uniform distribution, the ducts 22, 23 and 24 are provided with distribution baffles or other distribution members (not reproduced) ...
For clarity, the bearings and the sealing joints between the support part 18, the rotary part 17 and the rotary part 20 are not shown, as are the controls for these parts 19 and 20.
Starting from the three annular conduits 22, 23 and 24, the polymer flows pass through the support part 18 passing through three circular networks of conduits 25, 26 and 27 each communicating with an annular chamber 28, 29 and 30 respectively.
The two rotary parts 19 and 20 preferably rotate at an almost equal angular speed, but in different directions, as indicated by the arrows 31 and 32. Each rotary part is in itself a co-extrusion matrix for two layers, the one consisting of mixture A and the other of mixture B. For clarity, the reference numbers for the explanation of
<EMI ID = 16.1>
ment through part 19 is similar. Starting from the chamber 29, the polymer mixture A reaches the rotary part via the conduits 33, while the polymer mixture B coming from the chamber 30 reaches the rotary part via the conduits 34. Inside the rotary part, two annular conduits 35 and 36 are in communication with the conduits
33 and 34 and are separated by a thin circular wall 37.
After having passed the edge of the wall 37, the two mixtures A and B unite with one another in an annular receiving chamber 38 which ends in an outlet orifice 21. Passing through the annular duct 35 and the receiving chamber 38, the thickness of the fluid sheet is greatly reduced, so that the material is attenuated.
The partitions between the adjacent conduits 33 and 34 must be profiled as shown. For clarity, they extend radially to the drawing, but should actually form an angle with this direction to reduce the tendency for matrix lines to form.
"Polymer A" is a blend of two incompatible or semi-compatible polymers, while "Polymer B" is able to give the sheet an appropriate tendency to delamination. Therefore, it can consist, for example, of an elastomer which is poor adhesive for the two layers of mixture A, and can be extruded in the form of strips. However, if the conduits 22 and 23 receive two different mutually incompatible polymer blends, the polymer B can be an adhesive whose bond is relatively strong for the two polymer blends, and must, in this case, be extruded into strips or interrupted d 'another way.
A preferred cold stretching process is defined by

controlled grooves 72, guide cylinders 73 and cylinders 74 whose longitudinal section resembles a banana. The banana cylinders 74 serve, after each stage, to erase the folds produced by the transverse elongation. Passing on the cylin-

the longitudinal extension line, where it passes through a water bath 76 serving to remove the heat produced by the extension and to maintain an appropriate extension temperature, for example, 20 to 40 [deg.] C. Finally, it is wound on a reel 77.
The arrow 78 indicates the direction of the machine.
A pair of controlled grooved cylinders 72 are shown in detail in FIG. 4, the film 79 being pressed and
<EMI ID = 19.1>
In FIG. 5, the relative lengths of the arrows in the streaks I and II of the film 79 indicate the relative magnitudes of the orientation defined by the biaxial elongation method shown in FIGS. 3 and 4.
With regard to both FIG. 5 and FIG. 6, the numbers 1 and II denote the streaks A and B mentioned above, which generally have a variable width and an uneven character.
In addition, it should be noted that the outer layers 81 and 82 of the film 79 are not always symmetrical with respect to the thin middle layer 83. This asymmetry is also used to create a bifurcation of the tear.
An example of the invention is given below.
A series of sheets, all based on polyolefinic mixtures, is produced by the extrusion matrix of the figure
2. The diameter of the outlet slot 21 of the matrix is 130 mm and the width thereof is 1 mm. The largest width of the receiving chamber 38 is 4 mm, which means that the magnitude of the attenuation during the passage through the receiving chamber to the exit slot is smaller than that which is preferred. The extrusion temperature is about 240 [deg.] C.
After the longitudinal cut of the tubular film, the elongation is carried out first laterally during four to eight stages, then longitudinally during two to four stages. The composition, the width of the flat tube (measurement of the insufflation ratio), the elongation temperature, the elongation ratio and the results are given in the table below. "Nov" denotes Novolene, that is to say a gas-polymerized polypropylene with a relatively high content of atactic modification. "PE" represents low density polyethylene. "EPR" means an ethylene-propylene rubber. "SA 872", "7823" and "8623" are different types of polypropylene with low polymerized ethylene content. "EPR / PE" represents a 50/50 mixture of ethylene-propylene rubber and low denomination polyethylene.
