<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

"Process for purifying wool grease and products thus obtained." The present invention relates to the technology for purifying wool fat and, more specifically, relates to
<EMI ID = 1.1>
wool using hydrocarbon solvents or isolated from waste water when washing wool using solutions of surfactants in order to obtain lanolin used
in perfumery and in the pharmaceutical industry.
A process is known for purifying wool fat by neutralizing the fat miscella in a hydrocarbon solvent using an aqueous alkali solution in the presence of alcohol.
The miscella, containing 25% fat, is brought into a mixer where a 20% alkali solution is introduced. A hydrocarbon solvent and an aqueous alcohol solution are added thereto. By decantation, the mixture separates into two layers: the upper layer is neutralized miscella, the lower layer is an aqueous solution of soap alcohol (soap stock: neutralization paste). The neutralized miscella, containing a significant amount of soap, is repeatedly washed with an aqueous alcohol solution. The layer of alcoholic-aqueous soap solution is washed with a hydrocarbon solvent to extract the fat (Rogatchev NV, "Washing wool with solvents" CNIITEJlegprom, Moscow, 1971, p. 29) .
In this process, the use of notable excess of alkali at a high concentration is envisaged, which promotes the saponification of the fat and reduces the solubility of the soap in the neutralizing solution. The composition of the reactive phases is determined from the phase balance diagram for pure solvents: hexane, isopropyl alcohol and water. In reality, the reaction mixture includes: miscella, isopropyl alcohol, aqueous soap solution and alkali. The system is in practice more complex and the composition of the coexisting phases corresponding to a defined ratio of the components differs appreciably from the composition found according to this diagram. An effective and long contact of the phases during the mixture causing a mutual dissolution of the components contributes to a high dissolution of the soaps in the miscella.
In fact, the neutralized miscella contains a large amount of soap and obtaining quality lanolin requires repeated washing of the miscella several times with an aqueous alcohol solution while to reduce fat loss we need to repeated washing of the neutralization paste with a hydrocarbon solvent.
Thus, the process indicated is characterized by an implementation of the high alkali concentrations resulting in the saponification of the neutral fat and, consequently, in a reduction of the yield in finished product; moreover, an incorrect selection of the ratio of the components, the continuation of their introduction as well as an effective contact of the phases lead to the entrainment of the soap in the neutralized miscella and to the increase in the lanolin content of the neutralizing solution ce which requires repeated washing of the miscella in order to reduce the soap content and the treatment of the neutralizing solution to reduce the loss of lanolin, which complicates the technology of the process and its equipment.
It has therefore been proposed, by modifying the technological operations and by selecting specific ratios of the initial components, to develop a process for the purification of
wool grease, which increases the yield of the finished product, improves its quality, and simplifies the technological process and its equipment.
The solution according to the invention resides in the fact that, in the process of purifying wool fat by neutralizing the fat miscella in a hydrocarbon solvent using an alkali in the presence of alcohol, the miscella fat in the hydrocarbon solvent is mixed beforehand, before neutralization, with alcohol in a ratio of 10/1 to 10/4, while the aqueous alkali solution is mixed with alcohol in a ratio water / alkali / alcohol from 60 to 75/2 to 5/20 to
35, the mixture obtained of miscella and alcohol then being dispersed in the alcoholic-aqueous alkali solution obtained with subsequent separation of the phases by decantation.
It is advantageous to use hexane as solvent
<EMI ID = 2.1>
It is preferable to use miscella with a fat content of 10 to 40% by weight.
The proposed method takes into account the properties and particularities of the system which is formed during the neutralization of wool grease and achieves the conditions which reduce the water absorption capacity of the grease and increase the solubility of the soaps formed. Neutralization is carried out in
conditions managed without intensifying the process by mixing which makes it possible to eliminate the saponification of the neutral fat and to reduce the emulsion of the fat and its entrainment in the neutralizing solution.
The process is carried out as follows.
The miscella, obtained by washing the wool with a hydrocarbon solvent, for example hexane, or by dissolving in a hydrocarbon solvent the fat isolated from the washing waters, is mixed with an alcohol, preferably isopropyl alcohol, in a ratio of 10/1 to 10/4, while the aqueous alkali solution is mixed with an alcohol, preferably isopropyl alcohol, in a water / alkali / alcohol ratio of 60 to 75/2 to 5/20 to 35. The ratios indicated ensure the minimum mutual dissolution of the components during the mixing of the phases. It is preferable to use a miscella containing 10 to 40% by weight of fat.
The prepared miscella is dispersed in an alkali solution with subsequent separation of the phases by decantation.
The advantages of the proposed method compared to the known method are as follows:
The improved quality of lanolin due to the reduction in the soap content thereof; this is achieved by adding alcohol to the miscella and the neutralizing solution in accordance with the ratios indicated which ensure maximum phase separation and reduced entrainment of the soap in the neutralized mis-cella.
The increase in the yield of finished product thanks to the use of alkali solutions at low concentration.
The elimination of repeated washings of the miscella and the neutralizing solution, following the reduced entrainment of the soap in the neutralized miscella, and losses of the lanolin with the neutralizing solution.
The technological procedure and the simple technical material of the process.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will be better understood on reading the nonlimiting description which will follow of concrete embodiments.
