<EMI ID=1.1>
de réaliser une opération de rognage de boîte plus parfaite. Par exemple, un autre type de dispositif utilise une molette comportant un tranchant intérieur, la boîte étant placée à l'intérieur de la molette et une molette intérieure étant ensuite positionnée à l'intérieur de la boîte et étant déplacée vers l'extérieur pour coopérer en vue du sectionnement avec la molette extérieure. Un inconvénient majeur des dispositifs de ce type est qu'ils sont très compliqués et onéreux à fabriquer et à entretenir;
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=15.1>
<EMI ID=16.1>
<EMI ID=17.1>
<EMI ID=19.1>
<EMI ID=20.1>
<EMI ID=21.1>
<EMI ID=22.1>
<EMI ID=23.1>
<EMI ID=24.1>
<EMI ID=25.1>

Method and apparatus for cutting boxes.
The present invention relates to the field of
cutting and trimming and relates, in particular, to a device
new and improved for trimming box ends
cylindrical or similar containers.
In the manufacture of metal cans, it is
common to form an unfinished container or box of cylindrical shape consisting of a bottom and a side wall
cylindrical which is open at its upper end. These unfinished boxes can be formed by various methods,
for example, stamping and mandrel drawing processes which result in the unfinished container. When the container has been formed, it is necessary to trim its upper end to make a completed container having a desired height and also having a smooth upper end edge allowing junction to a top cover. It is essential that the upper end edge
is free from defects, because it is then
subjected to an outward flanging operation to allow the attachment of the upper cover to the container. All burrs, cracks and the like of the
end edge can prevent a good seal between the lid and the box in the rim area to the point of rendering the box unusable and causing the loss of its contents.
Many known devices such as those described in US Pat. No. 3,894,455 have been developed for trimming the ends of unfinished containers. However, all the conventional devices currently known and used for trimming the ends of boxes have one or more defects and / or drawbacks. For example,
<EMI ID = 1.1>
unfinished on a mandrel for cutting by means of an outer wheel brought inwardly into contact with the outer surface of the box and moved from the periphery thereof to sever the box end. Devices of this type do not function satisfactorily due to the fact that the severing operation frequently produces burrs, cracks and other defects in the upper edge of the container wall in the upper edge of the container wall which become larger during cutting. subsequent edging of the box ends before the cover is applied to the boot body.
Other devices have been developed with a view to
to achieve a more perfect box trimming operation. For example, another type of device uses a wheel having an internal cutting edge, the box being placed inside the wheel and an inside wheel then being positioned inside the box and being moved outward to cooperate. for sectioning with the external knob. A major drawback of devices of this type is that they are very complicated and expensive to manufacture and to maintain;
in addition, the exact positioning of the necessary knobs
to obtain satisfactory sectioning is difficult to achieve there.
<EMI ID = 2.1>
n [deg.] 3,894,455 mentioned above as well as other patents of the Applicant represent a significant improvement in known box trimmers, there remain various fields in which further improvements are desirable. For example, the trimmer described in the aforementioned patent represents a notable improvement of the known machines in which the knurls are incorporated and in which the rupture of any part of the cutting device requires tedious disassembly in order to carry out the repair, because the device described in the aforementioned patent provides a relatively easily removable cutting device. However, the removable cutting device and the means for actuating its elements as shown in
Fig. 7 of said patent occupy a substantial space around the periphery of the main support shaft and it is therefore impossible to use more than two such cutters on the shaft. It would be desirable- <EMI ID = 3.1>
of the same caliber to increase the working speed and the present invention relates to an apparatus in which the size of the cutting cartridges is reduced so that three or more cartridges can be mounted on a main support shaft of a non-gauge. greater than that which was required for the assembly of two devices or cartridges of the type described in the aforementioned patent.
Another difficulty encountered in using the devices of the aforementioned patent n [deg.] 3,894,455 and other similar cutting devices using cooperating rotary rollers is that they sometimes produce an unwanted burr which extends towards the edge. outside when used to cut different types of boxes of different sizes and / or made of different materials. Although the adjustment of the devices can usually overcome this difficulty, these adjustments are tedious and result in appreciable unemployment. The invention avoids the above difficulty to a large extent by a very simple expedient which will be described hereinafter.
However, the main object of the invention is to provide a new and improved box trimmer. mentioned.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. A new and improved boot trimmer in which an increased number of cutting cartridges can be mounted on a common support shaft of a given caliber.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved bunching machine ensuring smoother and more perfect sectioning of the ends of boxes.
The foregoing objects can be achieved by the preferred embodiment of the invention with the aid of a main rotary shaft mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis in frame members, the shaft comprising a plate. radial turret. Three cutting cartridges are mounted on the turret plate at equal distances around the periphery of the shaft, the connection of each cutting cartridge being provided only by the connection of one end of the cartridge to the turret plate. .
A stationary cam is placed on the machine frame near the turret deck and operates a deck mounted cam follower for each cutting cartridge in
<EMI ID = 4.1>
wheel operation of each cartridge which passes through an opening provided in the turret plate. The actuation of the wheel actuator in each specific cutting cartridge provides the movement of a wheel shaft capable of pivoting transversely to bring a wheel provided on its end in contact.
with a similar wheel provided on a shaft fixed axially and mounted in the cutting cartridge; both rolls are driven by an output drive mechanism on the turret plate. None of the actuators provided on the turret plate extend outward beyond the periphery of the cutting cartridge and a significant space saving, compared to the cutting cartridges of the state patent. United States of America n [deg.] 3,894,455 mentioned above, is therefore carried out.
In addition, the assembly of each cutting device
<EMI ID = 5.1>
with the turret plate allows easy removal and / or replacement of roller cutters when required for maintenance. The turret plate further includes a rotatable female drive fitting which engages a male drive fitting cooperating on the cutting device to rotate the two cutting cartridge wheels. The necessary connections to the brackets of the cam-driven and gear-driven rollers are made automatically by simply mounting the cutting cartridge on the turret plate.
Another significant aspect of. the preferred embodiment is that the end of the box to be trimmed is positioned around the fixed wheel in the direction
<EMI ID = 6.1>
interior against the outer surface of the box to perform the severing operation, while, in known devices, the exact opposite construction has been used. More specifically, the known devices use the displacement of the internal wheel outwards against the internal surface of the wall of the box.
The reverse roll positioning movement of the preferred embodiment is believed to contribute substantially to providing a more uniform and smoother trimmed can end edge.
In addition, molëttes are mounted on trees
<EMI ID = 7.1>
trimming and this tilt appears to significantly reduce the formation of burrs on the cut edge.
Another peculiarity of the preferred embodiment resides in the presence of several tear-off pins placed on the cutting cartridge so as to surround in substance a box being trimmed, a tear-off plate being slidably mounted. in the. two directions on the breakout pins. The tear-off plate is received in two parallel grooves of a holder re-bonded to the housing of a vacuum mandrel in which the base or bottom end of the trimming box is held in place. The housing of the vacuum chuck moves back and forth which brings it closer to and away from the trimming wheels in order to move the cutting plate.
<EMI ID = 8.1>
to eliminate the waste crown cut after the trimming operation. The arrangement of the arra-
<EMI ID = 9.1>
simply lift the tear-off plate from its holder when the cartridge is removed from the machine. The foregoing construction is another feature which allows the cutting cartridge to be easily removed from the machine.

Reference will firstly be made to FIG. 1 of the accompanying drawings which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, generally designated 10, which comprises a main base support frame 20 and a first and second backrest 22 and 24 made of thick sheet metal , vertically oriented and spaced apart, between which most of the active elements of the preferred embodiment are placed and supported as described in more detail below.
More specifically, a long main support shaft 26 is rotatably mounted in bearings provided in the backrests 22 and 24, this main support shaft comprising stations for receiving three cutting cartridges 28 each placed symmetrically around. of the shaft axis and also comprising box handling means comprising three associated vacuum mandrels intended to receive boxes to be trimmed by knurling wheels provided on each of the cutting cartridges. The main support shaft is driven from the output shaft 30 of a motor-reduction unit 22 mounted on the base frame 20, as shown in FIG. 1, the output power of the shaft 30 being transmitted to a toothed drive belt 32 by means of a toothed drive pulley 34 wedged on the shaft 30.
The toothed drive belt 32 passes around a main drive toothed pulley 36 wedged on the end of the main support shaft 26 and around a pulley 38 wedged on a shaft 40.
A second toothed pulley 42 is wedged on the outer end of the shaft 26 on the outside of the pulley 36, as shown in FIG. 2-A., And engages the outer surface of a toothed belt 44 which passes around a pulley 48 mounted on a drive shaft 50 for the can dispenser and a movable adjustment pulley 52 whose position can be be regulated by a device 54, etc. to change the tension of the belt 44. The drive shaft 50 of the can distributor drives a conventional can distributor 55 (Fig. 1) as disclosed in United States Patent No. [deg.] 3,916. 740.
The opposite end of the main shaft 26 is provided with an output toothed pulley 56 over which a toothed belt 58 passes, as shown in FIG. 4. The toothed belt 58 also passes around an adjustable idler pulley.
60, the outer face of the belt 58 engaging a pulley 62 wedged on a mandrel drive shaft 64 which passes through the backrest 24 and drives a V-belt pulley
70 around which a V-belt 72 passes, as shown in FIG. 1. In addition, the V-belt 72 passes around a mandrel drive pulley 74 mounted on a mandrel drive sleeve 76 which is itself rotatably mounted around the shaft 26, as.
shown in FIG. 2-B. Further, a mandrel drive ring gear 78 having outwardly facing teeth is attached to the end of the sleeve 76 so as to rotate with it to drive three vacuum mandrel drive sprockets 80 which each serve. in rotating a shaft 82 on the end of which is mounted a vacuum mandrel 84. Three vacuum mandrels 84 are provided, each of them being associated respectively in line with one of the cutting cartridges 28.
A control cam 90 of the disconnector device

22 and has a cam surface 91 for controlling the opening and closing movements of the rotary cutting wheels used in each of the three cutting cartridges
28 which are mounted on shaft 26 in a manner described later. The cutting cartridge wheels are rotated by an input pinion 92 wedged on the end
of the shaft 40 from the inner side of the backrest 22, as shown in FIG. 2-A, pinion 92 meshing with a larger diameter pinion 94 attached to a sleeve 96 to which an output pinion 98 is also attached. A rotating turret plate
100 is fixed to the shaft 26 and supports three drive shafts 102 of the cutting cartridge wheels, mounted in three cutting cartridges distributed evenly around the periphery of the turret plate 100 and each supporting a pinion 104 meshing the output pinion 98, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
A portion 26 'of reduced diameter of the shaft 26 is provided, immediately to the right of the turret plate
100, three 110 plates attached to the turret plate
100 by machine screws 111 and extending outwardly of the shaft portion 26 'to define three spaces therebetween, each space defining a cartridge mounting station in which one of the cutting cartridges 28 is. climb. The three cartridge mounting stations are identical as are the cutting cartridges, each station comprising a cam follower roller 120 mounted on a swivel plate 122 (Fig. pivotally mounted on an axle 124 provided on a console pivot 124 attached to the side of the turret plate 100 facing the support back 22.
A compression spring 123 is provided between the pivot plate 122 and the face of the turret plate 100 to bias the pivot plate 122 outwardly, such that the cam follower 120 is pressed against the cam surface 91 of the fixed cam 90 controlling the cutting device. The shape of the cam surface 91 is such that the roller 120 is pushed in and out as the turret 100 rotates and the roller 120 follows the profile of the cam surface 91. A stud bolt. Threaded thrust 130 adjustable is mounted in the swivel plate 122 in a position set to engage the end surface of a follower button 132 having a head flange mounted in a cylindrical slide 134 which can slide axially in both directions in the plate turret 100.
The cylindrical slide 134 is internally hollow and has a relatively strong compression spring 136 which reacts between the end wall of a

machine and detach them. The cylindrical envelope
160 of the housing includes a transverse inner wall 166 and a butt wall 168 connected at the end opposite the head flange 162. A bearing sleeve 170 is integrally formed in the butt wall 168. and supports bearings which in turn hold a cutting wheel shaft 172 axially fixed and on the end of which an axially fixed first cutting wheel 174 is mounted to rotate with it.
The wheel 174 includes an annular blade 176 which can be engaged with a similar blade 178 provided on a second wheel 180 mounted on a wheel shaft 182 which can be moved transversely and which is supported in a manner described hereinafter for bring the blade 178 by pivoting into contact with the first blade 176 and to separate it therefrom. The knurls are conventional and can be of the type shown in US Pat. No. 3,916,746.
The internal transverse wall 166 of the housing includes an opening delimited by a surface 167 which allows shafts 172, 182 and other associated elements to be positioned in the housing. Specifically, a central portion 169 of the wall 166 supports bearings for the axially fixed shaft 172 and is engaged from both sides by thrust bearings 186, 188 mounted on the shaft.

is placed in the opening 163 provided in the head flange
162.
A push rod is mounted in the opening 161
of the head flange 162 so that it can move axially in both directions, as shown in FIG. 8, and its outer end can be engaged with the bolt head
140 mounted in the end wall 138 of the cylindrical slide 134 which slides in one direction or the other substantially parallel to the axis of the shaft 26 by the intervention of the cam follower 126 which rolls on the cam 90 , as described above. Therefore, the push rod 194 is moved inward by the intervention of the cam follower 120, etc. The inner end 195 of the push rod 194 is rounded and engages an idler arm 198 mounted on a. pivot 200 substantially axially perpendicular to the axis of shaft 26 mounted in an opening 202 provided in a support block
204, as clearly shown in FIG. 11.
Support block 204 is secured to internal transverse wall 166 by machine screws 206. The lower end of support block 204 includes an opening 208. in which is received a pivot 210 pivotally supporting an oscillating support 212 of the knurling shaft (Fig. 11).
The oscillating roller shaft support 212 comprises a first and a second arm 214 and 216, the arm 216 having an extension 217. The arms 214, 216, 217 are pierced with axially aligned bores in which bearings are provided for. support the second wheel holder shaft

Fig. 8. It should be noted, at this point, that the end wall
168 is pierced with an opening 218 determining an ease

as shown in Fig. 8, so as to allow the extension 217 to oscillate about the axis of the pivot 210 in the opening 218 to effect a displacement of the blade 178 bringing it into contact with the blade 176 or away from it.
The previous movement of the blade 178 relative to the blade 176 is effected by the pivoting movement of the return arm 198 about the axis of its pivot 200, the return 198 attacking a steel ball 230 with a low coefficient of friction. placed in a corresponding recess 232 provided in the upper end of the oscillating support 212 of the knurling shaft. The surface 199 of the idler 198 attacks the opposite side of the steel ball 230, as clearly shown in FIG. 9. The oscillating roller shaft support 212 is resiliently biased counterclockwise in FIG. 9 by a compression spring 234 which attacks the upper surface of the first arm

upper. Therefore, the axially fixed knurled shaft 172 is rotated about its own axis and the pinion 190 it carries engages a similar pinion 238 on the shaft 182 to drive the shaft 182 in rotation. . Note that the pinions 190 and 238 are always engaged for all positions of the movable shaft 182 so that the blades 176 and 178 are continuously driven in opposite directions.
A tear pin holder block 239 is attached to the end wall 168 and supports a plurality of tear pin 240, as shown in FIG. ?. A tear-off plate 242, pierced with several holes 244 which fit

U 248 attached to the ends of two support rods 249. The support rods 249 are slidably mounted in
a first and a second notched plate 250 and 252 which form a cradle for a box and which are attached to the shaft 26, as shown in FIG. 2-A.
Of course, the support rods 249 are mounted to slide in both directions with respect to the notched plates 250 and 252 and are fixed.
at their ends opposite to the support 248 to bosses
254 which protrude onto a vacuum chuck holder housing 256 in which the chuck shaft 82 is rotatably mounted.
Each shaft 82 is mounted in a hollow chamber
258 in a sleeve 260, the shaft 82 having an axial passage 86 communicating with the chuck 84 at one end and
a radial passage 262 at the opposite end which is in communication with a long vacuum chamber connected by passage 267 to passage 266 comprising a longitudinal groove formed in a vacuum distribution shaft 301 (Fig. 14) engaged in an axial bore of the tree
26. A rotating distributor disc 302 keyed to the shaft 301 has radial passages 303 and its peripheral surface is in contact with a carbon sealing element 304 mounted in a housing 305 delimiting a vacuum chamber 306 and a chamber placed in contact with it. atmosphere 307. The vacuum chamber 306 is connected to a vacuum source by a connector 308 so that the rotation of the disc
302 connects the chucks 84 to the vacuum chamber 306
or to the atmospheric chamber 307 at the required time in the cycle of operation for each revolution of the shaft 26, the sealing member 304 being angularly adjustable about the axis of the shaft 26 to adjust the timing of the shaft. application of the vacuum and the venting of the mandrels 84.
The vacuum chuck holder housing 256 is driven in an axial reciprocating movement with respect to the ar-
<EMI ID = 21.1>
on which a first and a second cam follower roller 276
and 278 are rotatably mounted while engaged with the
opposite sides of a fixed cam 280 attached to backrest 24 and used to reciprocate the mandrels.
Note that the opposite end of the cam follower roller carrier plate 274 is attached to the housing 256, to the bush
260, etc. to animate it with a reciprocating movement, this movement causing the chuck drive gear wheel 80 to move along the chuck drive gear ring 78 whose axial dimension is significantly greater than that of the toothed wheel 80. Consequently, the
gear 80 is always in mesh with the ring gear
78 so that the rotational drive of the mandrel shaft 82 is constantly ensured, while this shaft is constantly driven by an axial reciprocating movement. The displacement of the vacuum mandrel 84 to the left towards
the cutting cartridge, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2-B,
is used to move an untrimmed box 287, the base of which is supported by the mandrel, above the blade 176 which is
axially fixed.
In operation, the conventional can dispenser 55, which may be of the usual type such as that shown in US Pat. No. 3,977,358, feeds the untrimmed bundle blanks 284 onto the bundles. plates enco-

oriented towards the associated cutting cartridge 28. The posi-tioning of the boot blank, untrimmed on the notched plates is carried out simultaneously with the application of the vacuum to the mandrel 84 'so that the mandrel attracts the bottom 286 of the box against itself. As the mandrel rotates continuously.} The box immediately begins to rotate around
its own axis. Cam 280 moves mandrel 84 and
'box attached to it to the left, so that the open end of the box moves above the blade
176 and that the case body is positioned between the spaced apart roller blades 176 and 178, as shown in FIG. 8. However, continued rotation of shaft 26 causes cam 90 to push push rod 194 back.
inward to bring the blade 178 into cutting contact
with the blade 176 to trim the end 287 of the box in an obvious manner.
Trimming of the box end is done very quickly due to the rotation of the knurls and the blade
178 is moved apart by pivoting of the blade 176, then the cutting devices are moved apart by the intervention of the cam
control knob 90, and the vacuum chuck is then moved to the right in FIG. 1 to the intervention of the cam
280 until the lower mandrel occupies the position represented
<EMI ID = 23.1>
right to a position where it pulls off the trimmed end portion 287 of the pin box 240.
In addition, the trimmed box is unloaded from the mandrel by interrupting the vacuum applied to the mandrel by the distributor disc 302 when the mandrel and its associated mounting device move to their far right position under the control of the cam 280. used to animate the mandrel with a back and forth movement. The completely rotated box is then released into a receptacle or onto a conveyor as required by the particular installation.
Another aspect of the invention resides in the fact that the casing 160 of the knurls and the blades of these knurls as well as their mounting shafts are usually inclined with respect to the axis of the box body 284 (which is parallel to the axis of the casing body 284). shaft axis 26), as shown in FIG. 13, 2 [deg.] Maximum to remove an external burr
gearbox body and make a smoother cut than is possible when the gearbox body axis and the roller blade support shafts are parallel. This low inclined orientation of the axes of the knurling wheel shafts
172 and 182 with respect to the axis of the box is achieved by the simple means of a shim 290 mounted between the head flange 162 and the turret plate 100, as the

thicknesses between 0.025 and 6.35 mm with a head flange having a diameter of 18.73 cm, shims of different thicknesses giving optimum results depending on the size and material of the trimmed box . However, in some cases the shim 290 is not used and the knurl blades therefore rotate about axes parallel to the axis of the trimmed box.
It is also possible to reverse the axial positions of the roller blades 176 and 178 so as to change the direction of any burr resulting from the trimming operation. Such a modification requires the use of handwheel shafts of slightly different lengths to allow reversal of the axial position of rollers 176 and 178. The burr may extend inward or outward from the face. the box. Figs. 2-A and 8 respectively illustrate the two different posi-ble positions of the wheels; when the knobs are positioned

side of the box, while the reverse positioning of knobs 176 and 178 illustrated in Fig. 8, produces a
burr that extends radially outward from the box.
 Therefore, the preferred embodiment
is of a particularly simple but robust construction and is particularly advantageous compared to the device

This means less space, which allows a greater number of cutting devices to be placed in a given diameter and for the fact that it is very easy to remove the cutting cartridges for repair and / or replacement. This removal of the cutting cartridges is easily accomplished simply by removing the machine screws 164 followed by lifting the device from the machine. The fact that the plate

the exterior in an obvious manner with the associated cutting cartridge.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the details of execution described to which numerous changes and modifications can be made without departing from its scope.
