<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

Reactor and process for the manufacture of aggregate mixtures with
hot.
<EMI ID = 1.1> of hot aggregates, particularly bituminous aggregates.
Bile does not apply particularly, not exclusively, to
the manufacture of bituminous mixture, of the type in which a cold mixture of aggregates and a bituminous bonding agent are introduced into a reactor in the form of an elongated rotating hollow drum in which the produced them are thus introduced
<EMI ID = 2.1>
in which the binding agent = coats the aggregate particles by adhesion, while the moisture contained in the products is vaporized and discharged from the drum *
Various reactor configurations have been proposed for implementing the above methods. They usually have a liquid fuel burner or beggar placed
at one end of the drum with one or more air inlets which pass through the mass of oxygen necessary for complete combustion and a current of hot air passing through the burner. In a conventional reactor, an air atomizing burner pro-

mixture of aggregates in contact with this flame, the binding agent being admitted into the hot aggregate essentially outside the flame being reached.
With this known reactor, difficulties have arisen in ensuring the liquefaction of the binding agent and the extraction of moisture with a suitable degree of efficiency to obtain a hot mixture of the desired specification, while maintaining. oxidative loss of the binding agent within acceptable limits. The entrainment of large volumes of fines in the exhaust air stream has raised a common problem.
<EMI ID = 4.1>
prior and the high air flow required, on the one hand to atomize the fuel from the burner and feed the flame and, on the other hand to remove the fines, has too often led to unacceptable noise levels. These problems have also been encountered when the bituminous agent is not added to the drum but combined in batches with the hot unbound aggregate mixture removed from the drum.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
were: mitigated by using sophisticated equipment for dust and noise control and / or by premixing the products and adding them in successive stages planned to virtually eliminate the production of free fines inside the drum. However, the first of these attempts proved to be very expensive, while the last resulted in an excessively high level of bitumen oxidation and loss of bitumen by entrainment in the discharge stream. Another attempt has been made to reduce the necessary air flow by substituting more complicated, mechanically atomized liquid fuel burners for the relatively simpler air atomization burners traditionally employed, but this has turned out to be only the case. 'a partial palliative.
The basis of the present invention is, in part, the belief that advantageous results can be obtained by controlling the flow of air extracted from the drum according to the controlled conditions inside this drum.
Consequently, the invention first of all provides a reaction

body with a vertical exhaust stack 86. An exhaust fan is mounted at 88 on the exhaust stack and is driven by a motor 90 mounted externally. This motor and the exhaust fan are adjusted for a constant exhaust flow rate. The duct 84 is provided with an air intake

The feed introduced through chute 44 may only consist of a mixture of free aggregates, but in the preferred method under consideration, this feed typically consists of premixed feedstocks comprising a mixture of aggregates and an aggregate. bituminous binding agent so as to stabilize and homogenize the products, at least to a large extent, before introducing them into the treatment chamber. A previously used bituminous mixture can be recycled by incorporating it into this pre-mixed feed. This feed enters the rotating drum and travels to the bottom of the drum while being stirred by the ac-

The hot gas stream from the combustion chamber 66 which may include a quantity of unburnt air from combustion products is at a temperature sufficient to effect the conversion of the product into a hot bituminous mixture by vaporization of the moisture in it. the product and by simultaneously coating all the grains with the bonding agent under a uniform thickness by the physical contact of these grains with the liquefied bitumen.

The detector 104 is placed at the junction of the combustion chamber 66 and the treatment chamber 63.
The sensors 100, 102 are coupled into a first control circuit 110 which determines the positioning of the motor.

product variables measured by detector 102 are applied both to an operator reading device 114 and to a control device 116 into which the set values of these variables are entered. * The two control outputs

motor 112 operates according to rough manual settings made either on an auto-manual control panel 122, or on an auxiliary controller 124, or through the outputs of controller 118 itself preset to rough conditions. As soon as a measurable amount of product appears at port 83, a signal on output 116a switches relay 120 to route

bustion, when the temperature of the product falls below a predetermined lower limit, while the supply of fuel and air is reduced if a temperature is registered too high above the predetermined limit.
Pressure sensor 104 is the control point for the second separate set of control circuit 130

104 includes transducer 134 for converting indication
pressure into an electrical signal which is applied to a controller 136. The result of comparing the recorded pressure value with the actual value is used to adjust register 92 through motor 132, a controller auto-manual 138 being provided for the initial start-up and to ensure any additional commands. If the pressure in the drum falls below a given lower limit, registered in the device

It is assumed that the desired values for the main characteristics of the product, such as temperature, moisture content, constituent proportions and output flow rate, can be reflected as the two variables- <EMI ID = 57.1>
pressure in the drum. Thus, and in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is believed that it is possible to control the entire process by determining limits for these two variables based on the desired limits.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the production of hot bituminous mixtures. For example, the described reactor can be employed to heat and dry an aggregate mixture alone, the unbound mixture thus collected then being combined with a binding agent in a subsequent batch process. In this case, several of the advantages discussed more top can still be acquired by applying the principles of the invention.
