<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
(kcal/kg)
et i l'enthalpie d'un kg d'eau à son arrivée au fond du
sondage (kcal/kg).
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
avec les notations :
d : diamètre de la soupape (m)
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
tion (1), il vient :
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
avec les notations :
<EMI ID=13.1>
<EMI ID=14.1>
<EMI ID=15.1>

<EMI ID=19.1>

<EMI ID=21.1>

d'eau est nul (m d'eau) ;
d'eau est égal à q (m d'eau) ;
ho : hauteur de charge à l'intérieur du réservoir 1, lorsque le débit d'eau est nul (m d'eau) ;
<EMI ID=24.1>

"Process and apparatus for cooling gases
underground gasification of solid fuel deposits or gas from oil deposits exploited by combustion "in situ".
the cooling of the underground gasification gas which consists in introducing, inside the gasification gas recovery boreholes, a tubular device in which water is circulated.
The apparatus intended to carry out this process consists of two concentric tubes:
- a tube closed at its lower part, the diameter of which is usually between 40 and 60% of the useful diameter of the borehole casing, and
- a smaller diameter inner tube used for the water supply, the latter being, if necessary, surrounded by a heat-insulating envelope which prevents the cooling water from undergoing excessive heating before reaching the bottom of the boring.
Other cooling devices use
the direct mixing of gas and coolant (usually water); by way of example, one of these devices is described in U.S. Patent No. 3,343,598.
However, when cooling by direct mixing is used, it is essential to have a sQr and rapid device, which makes it possible to adjust the cooling flow rate as required. Indeed, if this flow rate is too low, there is a risk of overheating of the tubing, if
this flow rate is too high, there is a risk of water penetration into the ground.
The method according to the present invention relates to a device for cooling by direct mixing, in which the flow of cooling water is automatically regulated.
i matically as a function of the temperature of the gasification gas, so that the mixture of gas and water vapor

constant.
The water flow required to obtain this result can be determined by the relation:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
in which :
Q designates the gas flow (Nm <3> / h)
Cp the specific heat of the gas (kcal / Nm <3>)
<EMI ID = 3.1>
q cooling water flow rate (kg / h)
<EMI ID = 4.1>
(kcal / kg)
and i the enthalpy of a kg of water when it reaches the bottom of the
sounding (kcal / kg).
In the device according to the invention, the water flow is controlled by a valve whose opening e varies proportionally to the temperature difference.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
<EMI ID = 6.1>
the flow rate of such a valve can be calculated by the formula:
<EMI ID = 7.1>
with the notations:
d: valve diameter (m)
<EMI ID = 8.1>
the valve
g: gravity acceleration coefficient (9.81 m / sec <2>) H: head of head upstream of the valve (m of water) h: head of head downstream of the valve (m of water) .
<EMI ID = 9.1>
tion (1), it comes:
<EMI ID = 10.1>
We see that by a judicious choice of the geometry of the valve (d and ) and of the factor k, we can achieve the automatic adjustment of the water flow whatever the gas temperature, as long as Q and VH - h remain constant or they vary while remaining substantially proportional to each other.
In the device according to the invention, the opening of the water supply valve is controlled directly by the expansion of a gas temperature detection system placed at the bottom of the borehole and which comprises two metals with coefficients of different dilation.
The principle of the device is illustrated, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section passing through the axis of the borehole; Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section, on a larger scale, through the water flow control device, and Figure 3 shows a cross section, through this same device, through the XY plane of Figure 1.
The device according to the invention essentially comprises a cylindrical metal tank 1 with a diameter generally between 40 and 60% of the useful diameter of the casing 2 and a length not exceeding 5 to 10 meters, the side wall of which is pierced with orifices of small diameter 3 and the upper bottom of which is crossed by a tube 4 intended for the water supply and which extends inside the tank. This tube ends with an orifice 5, against which a valve 6 is applied. The lower part of the reservoir has two coaxial metal cylinders 7 and 8, The outer cylinder 7 is made of a high coefficient of expansion refractory steel and the inner cylinder 8 of a low coefficient of expansion nickel steel (Invar type).
The valve 6 is integral with the low expansion cylinder 8 and when the device is in place, at room temperature, it is in the closed position and strongly applied to its seat by tightening the screw thread 9, by which the cylinder 7 is assembled. to a connecting piece 13 mounted at the base of the tank 1.
When the base of the tank heats up in contact with the gasification gases, which rise in the annular space which separates the tank 1 from the casing 2, the difference in expansion of the cylinders 7 and 8 leads to a reduction in the prestressing force which applied the valve to his seat. When this force falls below a predetermined limit, the valve begins to open, and if the temperature of cylinders 7 and 8 continues to rise, the opening of the valve increases, increasing the pressure. opening being proportional to the increase in gas temperature.
The water flow which leaves the supply tube 4 to enter the cylindrical tank 1 through a set of holes 14 drilled in the connecting piece 13 increases as a function of the opening of the valve. This results in an increase in the water pressure inside the tank 1, which causes the expulsion of this water through the orifices 3 drilled in the side wall of the tank.
In an improved version of the device, the perforation of the side wall of the tank can be carried out with holes of larger diameter provided with threaded plugs 10, through which are drilled calibrated holes of conical shape 11 which ensure better dispersion of the water. water flow. In addition, to limit the wear, which could result from the high speed of the water, at the outlet of the valve, the deflector 12 which surrounds the valve will advantageously be made in the form of a removable piece of hard metal. .
The water supply tube 4 can be produced by assembling elements of steel tubes connected together.
by threaded joints, but it can also be made in the form of a one-piece flexible tube sheathed with steel wires, produced in accordance with the provisions provided for in the
<EMI ID = 11.1>
In the device according to the invention, the opening of the valve takes place according to a linear law as a function of the average temperature reached by the cylinders 7 and 8 according to the relation:
<EMI ID = 12.1>
with the notations:
<EMI ID = 13.1>
<EMI ID = 14.1>
<EMI ID = 15.1>
Moreover, due to the heat flow which flows through the metal of the cylinders 7 and 8, these cylinders take an equilibrium temperature intermediate between the temperature of the gas (T) and the temperature (T) prevailing in the upper part of the device, so that we can write:
<EMI ID = 16.1>
by denoting by p a numerical coefficient less than unity.
<EMI ID = 17.1> <EMI ID = 18.1>
for numerical value:
<EMI ID = 19.1>
For the device to fulfill its role perfectly, it is also necessary that in the absence of any intervention

Insofar as no adjustment modification occurs, the gas flow which rises through the borehole has a constant value: Qo (Nm <3> / h) which is a function of the temperature T and of the aerodynamic resistances which limit the gas flow.
The operation of the device according to the invention introduces into the sounding a volume flow rate of water vapor equal to:
q (kgA) / 0.8 (kg / Nm <3>) = 1.25 q (Nm <3> / h)
This flow replaces part of the gas flow so that we can write:
<EMI ID = 21.1>
In addition, the values of H and h can be expressed by the relations:
<EMI ID = 22.1>
with the notations:
<EMI ID = 23.1>
of water is zero (m of water);
R q: pressure drop in tube 4, when the flow
of water is equal to q (m of water);
ho: head of load inside tank 1, when the water flow is zero (m of water);
r q <2>: increase in the required load height
to force the passage of water through ports 3 or 11.
Taking into account relations (9) and (10), the term V H - h can be expressed by the formula:
<EMI ID = 24.1>
Formulas (8) and (11) show that the quantities
<EMI ID = 25.1>
bit q.
The form of the two functions is not identical,
the ratio Q / V H - h cannot remain strictly constant.
However, the value of this ratio can be kept within fairly narrow limits, by a judicious choice of the diameter of the water supply tube 4 and of the characteristics of the orifices 3 or 11 which condition the values of R and r.
In practice, we can assume that, for the values

<EMI ID = 27.1>
If we take into account the fact that for the highest gas temperatures the value of the ratio
<EMI ID = 28.1>
at 0.6, it is easy to check that for all the values of q between o and Ci __ the variation of the ratio
<EMI ID = 29.1>
It can also be seen that for all
<EMI ID = 30.1>
<EMI ID = 31.1> <EMI ID = 32.1>
plication of the device according to the invention will be to automatically maintain the temperature of the gas within a fairly narrow range, a little below the theoretical value To.
The value of the prestressing to achieve so that

undermine by expressing the fact that the thermal expansion which occurs when the temperature of cylinders 7 and 8 passes
<EMI ID = 34.1>
for value:
<EMI ID = 35.1>
must be compensated by the resultant of the elastic deformations of the metal of the cylinders 7 and 8 and of all the parts which connect the cylinder 8 to the base of the water supply pipe 4.
Taking into account the geometry of the device, it can be assumed, as a first approximation, that the deformations of cylinder 8 represent two-thirds of the resultant of the deformations and, if we take into account that when the valve is opened the compression tension in cylinder 8 must still be sufficient to counterbalance the force exerted from top to bottom under the effect of the pressure of the water contained in tube 4, the compression tension to be applied to cylinder 8 , at room temperature, can be expressed by the relation:
<EMI ID = 36.1>
with notations
M: Young's modulus of steel
S: straight section of cylinder 8 s: useful section of the lower orifice of tube 4

in kg / mm.
As an example, we will calculate the values of L and of! in the specific case of a survey of approximately
1,000 m deep, with water pressure at the base
<EMI ID = 38.1>
If the valve is forced to start to open
<EMI ID = 39.1>
reaches 1 mm for a gas temperature: T = 800 [deg.] C, equations (5) and (14) become:
<EMI ID = 40.1>
The first equation allows to define the length of cylinder 8:
<EMI ID = 41.1>
The second equation provides the value of the compressive tension which must be produced in cylinder 8 by the preload tightening:
<EMI ID = 42.1>
The calculations developed above show that the device according to the invention constitutes a simple and automatic means which makes it possible to ensure the cooling of the underground gasification gases and to maintain the temperature of the casing at an equal or slightly lower temperature.

and does not involve any transmission between the bottom and the surface. This results in very high operating safety and an absence of any hysteresis between the detection of a variation in the temperature of the gas and the corrective action provided by the device.
The apparatus described above and shown in the accompanying drawings can also be used for cooling gases from oil fields exploited by combustion "in situ".
