i

"Process for the manufacture of bags of heat-sealable material,
The present invention relates to a method for
the manufacture of heat-sealable plastic bags fitted with
handles formed by cutouts made in the walls of the bag and which include reinforcements assembled to the walls of the bag at the places where the handles are cut.
There are already methods for placing said reinforcements in the bags. These methods consist, in order to produce bottom welded bags, in gluing the reinforcements on the material constituting the bag before the bag is formed and, in order to produce side-welded bags, in cutting from a heat-sealable material previously introduced between the layers of material constituting the bag said reinforcements and to weld the latter either before or during the formation of the bags. This process for producing bottom seam bags has various drawbacks, the main one of which lies in the use of glue for fixing the reinforcements and in the difficult choice of the adhesive suitable for the plastics used.
In addition, the machine for implementing this method can only be used for the manufacture of bags of the aforementioned type with glued reinforcements and is furthermore equipped with a complex sizing device which requires very precise adjustment operations. and frequent maintenance operations. As for the process for producing bags with side welds, if it makes it possible to remedy the drawbacks resulting from gluing: reinforcements, it has the drawback of only allowing the manufacture of bags with side welds, bags which are less in demand than bottom weld bags, in particular because they do not have side gussets.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a method for placing welded reinforcements in bags with both bottom welds and side welds. The method according to the invention also has the advantage of being able to be implemented on a traditional machine for forming bags to which it suffices to attach an accessory allowing the installation of said reinforcements.
For this purpose, the method according to the invention consists in moving step by step a continuous strip of material in two superimposed thicknesses in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip, in momentarily separating the two thicknesses from one of the other, to simultaneously cut the two reinforcements of heat-weldable plastic material away from the strip of material and to introduce simultaneously, when the strip stops, the two reinforcements located one above the other between the two aforementioned thicknesses where they are spaced from one another and to weld each of these two reinforcements, in a single operation and during the aforementioned stop, to the corresponding thickness of material, to advance the strip d 'one or more steps, to practice, while the tape is stopped,
the cutouts constituting the handles where the reinforcements have been placed and to cut, between two consecutive cuts, the strip transversely to its length by welding the two thicknesses of material to form the bags.
The invention also relates to a machine for
the implementation of said method.
According to the invention, this machine advantageously comprises a folding cone, making it possible, from a strip in single thickness, to produce a strip in two superimposed thicknesses, a compensating device making it possible to unwind the strip continuously upstream of said device and to move said strip step by step downstream of the latter, means for simultaneously making the cutouts constituting the handles of each bag and means for making the aforementioned transverse cut to form the bags, the-

According to the invention and as illustrated in the drawings, the method for manufacturing bags of thermoplastic material, provided with handles 1 formed by cutouts 2 made in the walls 3 and 4 of the bag and which include reinforcements 5 assembled to the walls of the bag at the places where the handles are cut, consists in moving step by step a continuous strip of material 6 in two layers 7 and 8 superimposed in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 6, temporarily separating the two layers 7 and 8 one from the other, in simultaneously cutting the two reinforcements 5 of heat-sealable plastic material away from the strip 6 and to introduce simultaneously, when stopping the latter,
the two reinforcements 5 located one above the other between the two thicknesses 7 and 8 where they are spaced from each other and to weld each of these two reinforcements 5, in a single operation and during the aforementioned stop, at the corresponding thickness of material 7 or 8, to advance the strip 6 by one or more steps, to make, during the stop of the strip, the cutouts 2 constituting the handles where the reinforcements 5 were welded and cut, between two consecutive cuts 2, the strip 6 transverse

7 and 8 of material to form the bags.
To make the strip 6 formed from the two thicknesses
7 and 8, use is advantageously made of a strip of material 6 'having a single thickness, easier to print, and this strip is folded so as to obtain, by forming a parallel fold 9
the longitudinal axis of the strip, the two aforesaid thicknesses 7 and 8. For the production of bottom welded bags, the fold 9 is advantageously formed so that the thickness of material 8 protrudes from the thickness of material 7, the reinforcements 5 are introduced between the two thicknesses of material 7 and
8 separated from each other and fixed to them so
to be located substantially at an equal distance from the longitudinal edges 10 of the strip 6. After the installation and welding of the reinforcements
5, at 14, we fold back, at 11, the part 12 of the thickness 8 projecting relative to the thickness 7 on the latter and is carried out, at 13, the welding of this part 12 to the thickness 7 for forming a casing, this weld is cooled at 15 and then formed, at 16, a bellows 17 along each of the longitudinal edges 10 of the strip 6 from which the casing was formed. The cutouts 2 forming the handles are then made by perforating, at 18, the two thicknesses of material 7 and 8 as well as the two reriforts 5 which are welded thereto to form the handles 1 and one

in the form of a gut filled with gussets 17, to form the bag, this cut being made, at the same time as the welding of the bottom of the bag, near the cutouts 2 constituting the handles of the previous bag, or flush reinforcements 5, or at a short distance from the latter.
To make bags with side welds, the strip 6 'is folded back to constitute the strip 6 with two strictly superimposed thicknesses 7 and 8, the latter are separated and the reinforcements 5 are placed, pair by pair, near the free edges of said thicknesses. , the cutouts 2 are then made while the transverse cut to form the bags is carried out midway between two consecutive cutouts 2 forming the combs.
The machine for implementing the process which
is shown in the drawings and which is equipped to manufacture bottom seal bags, comprises a folding cone 20 allowing, from the strip 6 'in single thickness, to produce the strip 6 in two superimposed thicknesses, a compensating device 21 making it possible to unwind the strip 6 'continuously upstream of said device
21 and to move this strip 6 step by step downstream of the latter, means 22 for simultaneously making the cutouts 2 constituting the handles 1 of each bag and means 23 for making the transverse cut and weld to form the bags. The machine is provided with a feed apparatus 24 with reinforcements 5 comprising
a plate 25 rotating around an axis perpendicular to the plane in which the strip 6 moves and arranged so that part of the plate is situated between the two thicknesses of material 7 and 8 constituting the strip. This plate 25 has, regularly distributed at its periphery, zones 26 intended to receive each and in turn, when the plate is stationary, two reinforcements 5 located one above the other and on both sides. else
of the plate 25 and on which these reinforcements are immobilized during the rotation of the plate, a device 27 for feeding reinforcements arranged to feed, from a strip of material 28, two superimposed portions of material 29 constituting said reinforcements facing one of the zones 26 of the plate 25 located in the part of the plate which is itself located outside the strip 6, means 30 for stepping the plate 25, arranged so as to move the latter, always in the same direction (following the arrow
31) and by a step, to bring the zones 26 furnished with reinforcements 5 opposite the place where the reinforcements are applied to the thicknesses of material 7 and 8 during the displacement of one step of the strip 6, means 32 to immobilize the reinforcements on the areas 26 during their transfer from the feed device 24 to the place where they are welded and during the welding operation and means 33 for welding each of the reinforcements 5 to the thickness of corresponding material 7 or 8.
The feed device 24 comprises means for supporting the strip 28 of material wound in a single thickness and intended to constitute the reinforcements, a knife 34 for cutting this strip 28, substantially into two equal parts, parallel to one of its longitudinal edges 35 , guides 36 arranged to superimpose the two strip parts 37 and 38, means 39 for driving these two strip parts step by step and simultaneously, a plate 40 located downstream of these means
39 and intended to separate the parts of bands 37 and 38 from each other so that, when they are driven, they are arranged
on either side of the plate 25 and a knife 41 animated by a movement
i
ment transverse to the longitudinal axis of the strip parts 37 and
38, this knife 41 being arranged to separate from the latter the portions of strips brought to either side of the aforementioned plate and intended to constitute the reinforcements 5, the driving of the strip parts 37 and 38 in the device 24 and the separation of the aforesaid portions of said strips taking place when the plate
25 is stationary and when one of the free zones 26 of said plate is opposite the plate 40 of said device.
The step-by-step drive means 30 of the plate 25 are constituted by a jack 42 actuating a mechanism, known per se, moving the plate 25 by a fixed angular distance corresponding to the angular distance separating two consecutive zones 26 of the plate 25 intended for to receive the reinforcements 5, the control of the jack 42 being synchronized with the machine forming the bags so that the plate 25 moves during the displacement of the strip of material 6 intended to constitute the bags.
The means 32 for immobilizing the reinforcements 5 on the zones 26 of the plate 25 comprise a vacuum pump (not shown), a distribution system 43 ^ of pipes44 connecting the vacuum pump to the zones 26 which have perforations 45 to which the pipes 44 lead, these perforations 45 presented by the two faces of the plate 25, being covered by the reinforcements 5 so that, when the distribution system 43 allows suction, the latter are applied to the plate 25, said distribution system 43 being arranged so that the suction is created in a zone of the plate 26 determined when the portions of material intended to constitute a pair of reinforcements have been brought, on either side of the plate, into said zone 26.
The means 33 for welding the reinforcements 5 to the two thicknesses 7 and 8 of material consist of two heating elements 46 located on either side of the two thicknesses of material 7 and 8 and driven by jacks 47, when the strip of material 6 and the plate 25 are stopped, with a movement in the opposite direction to clamp and weld the thicknesses of material 7 and 8
and the reinforcements 5, the plate 25, located between said reinforcements 5, serving as thermal insulation so that the latter are not welded together. At the location where the plate 25 is located, the thicknesses of material 7 and 8 are separated from each other by rods 48. Downstream of the plate 25, the aforementioned part 12 of the thickness 8 is folded down, by means of a profiled rod 49, and this part 12 folded down to the thickness 7 is welded to form the aforementioned hose.
At the place where this welding is carried out, the thicknesses of material 7 and 8 are separated from each other by a plate 50 serving as thermal insulation to prevent the thicknesses 7 and 8 from welding together. the other. When the strip 6 advances by one step, the welding which has just been carried out to form the hose is placed under a device blowing air, pulsed by a fan 51, to cool the zone of material heated for the welding. In the next step, the formed casing passes through a device 52 allowing the formation of bellows 17. The casing is then brought to the next step under the means 22 making the cutouts 2 and the bag is finally formed by the welding bars.
53 constituting the aforementioned 23 moyers which weld and cut
the bottom of the bag.
To form the bags with side welds, it suffices to remove the plate 25 from the strip 6 so that the reinforcements are placed near the free edges of said strip, to render the machine components forming the hose and the bellows inoperative, to moving the means 22 making the cutouts 2 and performing the side seams for forming the bag using the sealing bars 53.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiments described and that many modifications can be made to the latter without departing from the scope of the present patent.
Thus, provision could in particular be made to combine the heating elements 46 welding the reinforcements 5 and the means 22 making the cutouts 2 in order to carry out, in a single operation, the welding of said reinforcements 5 and cutouts 2.

Process for the manufacture of heat-sealable plastic bags provided with handles formed by cutouts made in the walls of the bag and which comprise reinforcements assembled to the walls of the bag at the places where the handles are cut, said process being characterized in that 'it consists in moving step by step a continuous strip of material in two superimposed thicknesses in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip, in momentarily separating the two thicknesses from each other, in simultaneously cutting the two reinforcements made of heat-sealable plastic away from the strip of material and to be introduced simultaneously, when the strip stops,
the two reinforcements located one above the other between the two aforementioned thicknesses where they are spaced from each other and to weld each of these two reinforcements, in a single operation and during the aforementioned stop , to the corresponding material thickness, to advance the strip by one or more steps, to make, while stopping the strip, the cuts constituting the handles where the reinforcements have been placed and to be cut, between two consecutive cuts, the strip transversely to its length by welding the two layers of material to form the bags.
