Abstract

Catalysts for the redn. of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in effluent gases comprise natural tuffs consisting essentially of SiO2, Al2O3 and H2O, contg. a total of 1-10 wt.% alkali(ne earth) metal oxides and having a compsn. similar to that of mordenite and crionite, supporting a catalyst component comprising one or more Group IIb and/or VIII metals and/or Cr and/or Mn. The catalysts are inexpensive and have a high activity; they can be used to treat gases contg. large amts. of NOx (e.g. waste gases from boilers) as well as gases contg. small amts. of NOx. Their activity is not affected by H2O, CO2 or O2, or by SO2 in amts. up to several thousand ppm.
