Abstract

Copper refined by electrolysis contg. Se is melted and treated with alkali sulphide, by maintaining contact between the sulphide and the copper, in the form of a matte for long enough to reduce the Se content to a preset value, then separating the copper from the matte. A carbonaceous reducing agent mixed with alkali sulphate may also be used. The Se, which alters the heat treatment properties of copper drastically reacts pref. with the alkali metal. The process does not introduce excess oxygen.
