Abstract

1486727 Desulphurizing coal KVB Inc 20 March 1975 11720/75 Heading C5G Coal is desulphurized by heating coal particles to 100‹ to 500‹ F. and subjecting the heated particles to an oxidizing gas containing NO; as one of its constituents, the NO 2 selectively oxidizing the sulphur-containing compounds in the particles and the other constituents of the oxidizing gas being substantially non-reactive with the coal. After the oxidizing step, the oxidized sulphur compounds may be leached from the particles with water or a caustic alkali.
