Abstract

An active lactic bacteria prepn. having multiple resistance to medicaments is produced by selecting a sulphonamide-resistant strain of Streptococcus faecalis by the substance-gradient agar method and successive transfer to media with sub-inhibiting concns. of Streptomycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, erythromycin and aminobenzylpenicillin (in that order), stabilising this strain by successive further cultivation in milk medium contg. the above-mentioned antibiotics, and, after cultivating the strain in a skim-milk medium, pulverising the culture by spray-drying. The selected S. faecalis strain is of use in the treatment and prophylaxis of epidemic digestive disturbances due to antibiotic-resistant dysentery bacteria, and has the advantage of retaining its effects in the presence of not only sulphonamides and the above-mentioned antibiotics but also numerous other antibiotics.
