Abstract

Method of recovery of plutonium as PiO2 from scrap and reject fuel element material of UO2 + PuO2 comprises reacting the scrap with fluorine at >400 degrees C in the presence of alumina as catalyst, separating the gaseous UF6 and PuF6 mixt. obtd. by selective absorption of PuF6 on NaF at >86 degrees C, dissolving the complex fluoride in nitric acid soln. pptg. the plutonium as oxalate using oxalic acid and finally calcining in air to give PuO2. The UF6 may be crystallised out giving a further byproduct. The process uses less expensive equipment and is much less complicated than prior art processes.
