Separation of hydrocarbons, >=1 of which has labile H atoms (esp. aromatic of close boiling points, e.g. o-, m-, p-xylenes and/or ethylbenzene) is by fractional distillation while in contact with an organometallic cpd derived from a cpd. having mobile H atoms (e.g. an alkali metal deriv. of amines such as N,N dimethylaniline or aromatics such as isopropyl or isobutyl benzene) opt in an inert solvent. and with a basic catalyst such as a tert. amine, and a chelating agent such as a di- or poly-amine, and recovering as products a vapour phase enriched in hydrocarbons of less affinity for metal atoms, and a non-vapour phase enriched in more easily metallisable hydrocarbons.
