Abstract

Ditches and canals are made water-tight, particularly in arid regions, by adding to the water, at least from time to time, quantities of 0.0001 to 10 g/l. of styrene polymer of particle size of 1 to 100 mu, in the form of an aqs. dispersion, and using pref. as a protective colloid a vinyl pyrrolidone polymer. The styrene polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer with other unsaturated olefinic monomers, but should contain at least 20% styrene, pref. 60%. Bactericides may be added to the styrene polymer to resist destruction by bacteria.
