d'un branchement de tuyau aveo un autre tuyau, dont la , paroi présente un trou formé ou découpé dedans dans ce but ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Figure 1 est une vue en perspective d'un raccord pour la jonction d'un tuyau de dérivation à un tuyau de descente ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Figure 3 montre un autre raccord 14 décrivant l'invention.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Method of mounting pipe fittings to pipes." he

from a pipe connection to another pipe, the wall of which has a hole formed or cut therein for this purpose;
it is also applicable to fittings which can be used to close a hole in the wall of a pipe,
Certain advantageous features of the invention will be described in its use in connection of discharge pipes and downspouts, such as used in private or other buildings.
Heretofore, a number of methods of connecting branch pipes to downpipes or the like have been proposed and used (later in the description, which follows, reference will simply be made to downpipes). Many of these, however, require access to the interior of the downspout for the introduction of the functional part of a fitting into a hole cut in the pipe therein at the other end of said. Racoord used to fix the branch pipe.
The present invention relates more particularly to the making and mounting of fittings for joining branch pipes to downpipes or for filling holes in downpipes, which fittings do not require any special joint. to be provided as part of the down pipes and which do not require access to the interior of the down pipes. cente, when fittings are used,

The invention, in one of its aspects, provides a method of mounting a fitting on a pipe provided with a hole formed in said pipe, the fitting comprising a Strier which, with or without the cooperation of an additional element, is shaped to embrace the pipe to hold the fitting to the pipe, the yoke having open arms and a body adapted to fit against the pipe around the hole.
The body is formed of a synthetic plastic material, which is softenable by application of a solvent and which, when so softened, forms a bond with the pipe, and has an annular crown, shaped to engage the tube. hole provided in the pipe so as to locate the fitting on the pipe \ This method consists in applying a solvent, which will produce a bond by solvent action between at least the body of the fitting and the pipe, by connecting arms around the pipe to the Using bolt or bolts passing through the open arms, tightening bolts to compress the fitting against the pipe and allowing the softened material to harden to secure the fitting to the pipe.
The fitting can be used to connect a branch pipe to a downpipe or the like, or it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
can be used to close a hole in the latter,
The invention also partly oonstruotion of the fittings themselves. Such fittings may be formed by simple molding out of a suitable synthetic plastic material or they may include members formed of different materials, including metal, providing that the body which engages the main pipe or down pipe, to which the fitting is to be attached, is made of a plastic, which is suitable for solvent welding.
One of the practical features of this invention is that after the fitting has been welded by solvent action on the pipe, the arms with the bolt (s) connected thereto can be completely or partially removed, thereby improving the overall appearance. eh leaving the body firmly attached to the pipe.
The invention is now described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fitting for joining a branch pipe to a downpipe;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of an alternative connection for the junction of two branch pipes to a downpipe, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a fitting that can be used to plug a hole in a downspout.
The raooord 1 shown in figure 1, which is made of a synthetic plastic material capable of being wedged
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by the action of a solvent, such as a polyvinyl chloride, comprises a stirrup 2 shaped to embrace a downpipe (not shown) and, integrally with the stirrup, a tubular protuberance 3, to which the stirrup is connected.
The caliper 2 consists of a body 2a and arms 4 and 5, which are substantially semi-circular when viewed in plan and which together are shaped to embrace the downpipe, The arms 4 and 5 terminate in lugs respectively 6 and 7 projecting outwards, in which holes 8 and 9 are formed. In order to keep the fitting in place, on the downpipe, the arms 4 and 5 are placed around the pipe and the ears 6 and 7 are brought together by a bolt (not shown), which is passed through holes 8 and 9 and on which a nut is tightened. The solvent necessary to carry out the solvent-spray welding is applied to the surfaces to be welded before this tightening.
The outer end 10 of the protuberance 3 is intended to be connected to the end of a branch pipe, to which it can be attached in any suitable manner. It could, for example, be secured by any conventional type of fitting or using a standard O-ring system or, if the branch pipe itself is also made of a suitable synthetic plastic material, both elements could. be attached to each other by solvent welding or by using heat. This can be done before or after the fitting is attached to the downspout.
Among the materials, from which the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
branch pipe, there is polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and metals such as steel or copper,
The other end 11 of the protuberance 3 extends a little through the body 2a of the collar 2 and makes a flange, which is intended to fit into a hole provided in the downpipe, which hole can for example have been made by a current tank cutter. The body 2a forms a ring around the end 11 of the protrusion and is adapted to contact the wall of the downpipe around the periphery of the hole cut in this pipe.
Preferably, the connection is shaped such that the end 11 of the protrusion projects only through the thickness of the wall of the downpipe and does not project into the latter, so that dirt or waste does not remain there and does not cause a blockage of said pipe.
The fitting or its elements can be formed from a synthetic plastic material such as polyvinyl chloride (at least for the elements which must be welded by solvent action) or a polyethylene,
To connect the branch pipe to the downspout, the fitting 1, which has been deorit, is fixed in place with the end 11 of the protrusion 3 engaged in the hole provided in the downpipe and the clamp 2 is tightened. for the purpose of forcing the body 2a of the protuberance against the downpipe. The sealing is carried out by means of solvent action welding using a solvent applied in such a way that it acts on the surfaces between the fitting and the downpipe, after which the caliper
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is tight around the downspout.
As soon as the fitting has been connected firmly to the downpipe in this way, the arms 4 and 5 of the caliper (with the bolt pulling them together) can be cut out so as to present a cleaner appearance,
The modified connector shown in Figure 2 is shaped to be able to connect two branch pipes to the downpipe. Each element of the fitting comprises a stirrup 13 which extends only one half around the downpipe, the two stirrups 13 together being able to embrace said pipe.
Each yoke 13 is provided with a body and a protrusion 3, similar to the protrusion described in connection with FIG. 1, which projects through said body, and when the connector is arranged around it. a downpipe, these protrusions are substantially symmetrically opposed to each other, although this is not essential. The protuberances are tightened to the downpipe by tightening nuts and bolts arranged to pass through holes provided in the lugs of the arms, as described in connection with figure 1.
Although two stirrups 13, each with one of the protrusions 3, are shown in figure 2, it is obviously possible to make a simple stirrup through which two protuberances pass, which are fixed against the downpipe by bringing the ends of the stirrup.
Figure 3 shows another connector 14 describing the invention. This comprises a stirrup 15 with arms 16 and 17, which end in ears 18 and 19 respectively directed outwards and which are adapted to
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
be brought together around a downpipe by means of a bolt passing through the ears 18 and 19.
The caliper 15 has a body 20 in the form of a disc curved outwards, the inner face of which is provided with a locating ring 21. The ring is preferably shaped in such a way that it only projects. through the material (wall) of a pipe and does not project inside said pipe, so that debris or dust will not accumulate in the pipe.
Body 20 is clamped against the pipe by clamping arms 16 and 17 around the pipe and secured using a solvent to produce a solvent action weld between the pipe and the fitting, as has been described,
Fitting 14 may be used for the repair of limited damage in a pipe, the damage being replaced by cutting a hole in the pipe.
The connector 14 is more especially described and claimed in the patent application of the applicant filed this same day on the basis of the English patent N
1,084,312.
Although the invention has been described particularly in the application to branch and drop pipes in water drainage systems, it is not limited to this and is applicable in any case. , in which the end of a pipe is to be connected to another pipe at a point along the length of the latter or where a hole is to be closed along the length of a pipe, and the terms "branch pipe" and "downpipe" as used herein are to be interpreted accordingly,
