<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EMI7.1

CIRCUIT FOR INTERMITTENCY CONTROL
WIPERS OF A VEHICLE The invention relates to an electronic circuit for intermittently controlling the wipers of a vehicle, in particular of a motor car. The driver of a car has already noticed that in light rain, and with a continuous and rapid movement of the windshield wipers, the almost dry ice presents a great resistance to the movement of the brushes and that the wiper motor ice hardly.
The winding of the motor is then traversed by a large current, which can give rise to an excessive heating of the motor. A first solution sometimes adopted is a sweep of slower speeds varying in one or more different stages, or even more often than not. Continuing lesson, The disadvantage of this solution is that these lower speeds are obtained by connecting a resistor in series with the motor,
This means that the motor tends to be supplied with current or even at constant torque.
Now, we know that the resistive torque encountered by the brushes is essentially variable: it is maximum by very light precipitation and minimum.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
mum in heavy precipitation, It is clear that the combination of the constant motor torque with the variable resistive torque results in a non-constant sweep speed depending on the condition of the windshield, all the more so as the set speed is low; this can even go as far as wedging the b.ilais in the middle of their race. It should also be noted the inconvenience for the driver of the passage of the brush in his field of vision at slow speed.
These difficulties are remedied when, in light rain, the wipers can be controlled so that the wipers are wiped at full speed, but intermittently, with rest times which can also be adjustable, for example from 4 to 30 seconds. We will therefore have a round trip of the brushes followed by an adjustable dead time, followed by a second round trip, the same dead time, etc.
It is known that in most vehicles, the windshield wipers receive their movement from an electric motor, which continuously rotates in the same direction, and through a mechanism which transforms this rotation into a back and forth movement. The motor is supplied by a source through a first switch which is closed when it is desired to start the windshield wipers.
To stop the movement, the switch is opened, but the brushes may then be at mid-stroke. In order to always obtain a stop at the end of the stroke, a limit switch is set. in parallel with the first, This switch is only open when the brushes are in their rest position, Such a circuit should therefore be replaced by another circuit which can also ensure, when desired, the movement intermittently, In order avoid modifying the existing circuit and its assembly in cars, and in order to allow easy assembly in cars already manufactured, it is essential that the solution
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is given in the form of an additional circuit which is connected to the existing main circuit,
with a minimum of contact points and which must be in an easily accessible place. In this case, a garage owner can easily incorporate this new possibility into existing cars.
The invention therefore relates essentially to an additional electronic circuit for intermittently controlling the windshield wipers of a vehicle, the main control circuit of which comprises an electric motor, the continuous rotation of which causes, by means of 'a suitable transmission mechanism, a back and forth movement in. interrupted windshield wipers, and: which is fed through an assembly of two switches in parallel, the first to be closed by the user to obtain uninterrupted movement, and the second being controlled by the wipers and not being open only when they are in their rest position.
According to the invention, this additional circuit is characterized in that it comprises, in series and to be connected in parallel to the two switches, a third switch to be closed by the user when he wishes an intermittent movement, and a thyristor whose the ignition electrode is connected to the output of a potential comparator on a comparison diagonal of a bridge circuit, the other diagonal of which is connected to the main terminals of the thyristor, the bridge circuit comprising three resistors and a capacitor, and the output of the comparator being suitable for delivering a signal to turn on the thyristor when the voltage on the capacitor exceeds the voltage on the resistor which is connected with the capacitor to one of the terminals of the thyristor.
The great advantage of this additional circuit lies in the fact that it has only two connection points which feel to be connected to the two inputs)! of the windshield wiper on switch.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This switch is located on the dashboard and is easily accessible and you can easily connect the two additional circuit connection wires to it.
An exemplary embodiment will be described below, showing particularities and other advantages of the additional circuit according to the invention, Figure 1 shows the main control circuit, as used up to now, FIG. 2 shows an example of an additional circuit according to the invention, and its connection with the main circuit.
Figure 3 shows a more general embodiment of the invention,
In Figure 1, the windscreen wiper engagement motor is represented by 1. It can be supplied by source 2, if the ignition key
3 of the car is closed, and if the driver has also closed contact 4 for starting the wipers, Contact 5 is always closed, except when the wipers 6 are in their position. rest, which is the position drawn in the figure. In this position, the contact 5 is opened by a stop 7 which is fixed to the windshield wipers,
With this additional contact 5, it is impossible that, when the driver opens contact 4 to stop the movement, the windshield wipers stop halfway, since then contact 5, in shunt, remains always closed until reaching the rest position.
The circuit as shown in figure 1 is c. i that is fitted on most cars, and it doesnt give the posslb. 3 of a movement intermittently. Figure 2 gives an example of an additional circuit which allows this possibility, and its connection with the main circuit according to figure 1. The elements of the main circuit are indicated with the same number. The circuit included a thyristor 8 and a contact 9, to be closed by the driver to start the intermittent movement. The thyristor and the contact are in series and shunted on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
contacts 4 and 5.
The ignition electrode 10 of the thyristor can be supplied, through a resistor 11, from the output of a comparator circuit 12 which is used for. compare the voltage on the capacitor 13 with a reference voltage which appears on the resistor 14, This capacitor and this resistor are mounted in a bridge circuit, which further includes resistors 15 and 16. Circuit 12 will therefore compare the potential at both ends of diagonal 17-18 of the bridge circuit, the other diagonal of which is placed at the main terminals, the emitter and the collector, of thyristor 8.
This other diagonal is therefore supplied by the voltage to which the thyristor is subjected. The comparator circuit has two transistors 19 and 20, the base of one of which is directly connected to the emitter of the other. Transistor 19 has its base-emitter circuit connected in measurement diagonal 17-18. Its collector is connected, through a resistor 21 to the capacitor 13, on the side which forms part of the end of the supply diagonal of the bridge circuit. The output of the comparator circuit is formed by the emitter of the other transistor 20. A diode 22, in series with a protective resistor 23 serves for rapid discharge of the capacitor when the thyristor becomes conductive.
The operation of the circuit is as follows: when the intermittent movement of the wipers is desired, contact 9 is closed, while leaving contact 4 open. Since the wipers are in rest position and thyristor 8 is waiting the ignition pulse, the engine remains stopped. In the meantime the capacitor 13 is charged through the resistor 16 and the potential at point 18 rises,
This potential is lower than the potential at point 17, defined by the voltage divider 14-15 which carries the voltage of battery 2.
The transistor 19 is therefore blocked and consequently the transistor 20 also,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The thyristor 8 therefore remains blocked. After a time defined by the time constant of the circuit R C of the capacitor 13 and of the resistor 16, the potential at 18 exceeds that at 17 and the transistor 19 becomes conductive. As a result, the potential increases at the base of transistor 20, which also becomes conductive. Capacitor 13 then discharges through the two transistors, and provides ignition energy for the thyristor. The latter becomes conductive and the motor 1 starts up, the windshield wipers start from their rest position, and contact 5 closes.
By this short-circuit, the additional circuit is no longer energized; thyristor 8 is reached and the capacitor is then discharged rapidly through diode 22 which is no longer blocked. Transistors 19 and 20 block. Since the contact 5 only opens when the wipers return to their rest position, they perform a complete back and forth movement and stop since then the contact 5 opens.
At this moment, the capacitor 13, completely discharged, recharges for a time defined by the constant R C of the charging circuit, until the transistor 19 becomes conductive again, and the cycle begins again. it should be noted that any comparator circuit can be used, and that it does not necessarily have to be the one shown in FIG. 2, The function that this circuit must perform is as follows: as soon as the voltage at the terminals of the capacitor 13 exceeds the voltage across resistor 14, the output of the circuit must deliver an ignition current to the thyristor. Other types of comparator performing this function are well known.
However, the circuit following FIG. 2 has the advantage of being a comparator with positive feedback from transistor 20 to transistor 19, which increases its reaction speed, and also of allowing a dual function for capacitor 13. : the load is used to define a waiting time

and the discharge to provide the energy '1l; lua.g du t, J.l}' # stor.
In the general case where any comparator circuit is used, it does not matter where the capacitor is with respect to the three resistors of the bridge, as long as the comparator circuit sends its signal d. The ignition when the voltage on the capacitor exceeds the voltage on the resistor which is connected with the capacitor to one of the terminals of the thyristor.
A more general example is therefore shown, in figure 3, using any comparator circuit 24, and with the capacitor at any point in the bridge circuit 25, the resistor which is then connected with the capacitor 4 a of the terminals of the thyristor is then resistor 26. During the time that contact 5 is fired, the capacitor can discharge through resistor 27, but H is of course always desirable that it can discharge faster! * , for example
EMI7.2
through the ctreutt'2i4. However, it is possible that when the contact 5 closes, the capacitor is not completely discharged.
By the short-circuit, caused by the closing of the contact

In the following case, figure 2, wetnédq is brought to this drawback by the crazy mine sthunt on the resistor 16 of a diode 22 of tear <! 1-gc. Then, during a bad assembly of the circait, upside down, with the direction of conduction of the thyristor against the polarity of the battery, the circuit is not subjected to any danger. Finally, -, one of the resistors, for example resistor 16, of the bridge can be made as a potentiometer to have a waiting time which is adjustable, This potentiometer can be combined with contact 9 and be made as a switch-potentiometer .
