Sur ce dessin: la figure 1 est une vue latérale, en partie en coupe, d'unénsemble de rivet selon la présente Invention$ la figure 2 est une coupe de l'ensemble du rivot de la figure 1 après l'avoir monté sur un ouvrage; la figure 3 est une vue de l'ensemble de la figure 2 observé depuis le côté droit;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

invention will emerge during the detailed description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing which gives, by way of explanation but in no way limiting, several embodiments in accordance with the invention,
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a rivet assembly according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the rivet assembly of Figure 1 after having mounted it on a work; Figure 3 is a view of the assembly of Figure 2 viewed from the right side;
Figure 4 is a section through a blank used to make the rivet of Figure 1, Figure 5 is a section showing the mandrel and blank of the rivet of Figure 4 in position in a set of forming dies In order to produce the rivet of Figure 1, Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 5 after the forming dies have extruded the blank around the mandrel giving it the desired general shape of the rivet body and Figure 7 is a cross section of the rivet in a second set of forming tools, showing a second or final stage in the rivet forming process.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a rivet assembly 10 which generally comprises a rivet 12 consisting of a cylindrical body 14 near one end of which there is a cheek 16, and a mandrel 18 disposed in the body. . The mandrjn is provided with a mounting head 20 disposed outside the body and at the end opposite the cheek,
To form means for slitting the end of the rivet body along segments when the rivet is mounted,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the rear of the head is provided with a group of rearwardly projecting wedges which are evenly spaced around the head.
In the embodiment shown, the wedges 22 are driven into the adjacent end of the rivet body for a reason which will become apparent later. In order to prevent the mandrel from being removed from the body of the rivet after its assembly, as will be seen later, the mandrel is provided with a series of peripheral grooves 24 whose shape makes them stops 26 facing forward. A neck 28 is formed on the mandrel in the usual manner to form a point of rupture as the mandrel is pulled to mount the rivet.
The rivet assembly 10 may be manufactured by the method shown in Figures 5-7. The head 20 of a pre-shaped mandrel is inserted into a cup-shaped blank 30 which has a peripheral wall 32 and a thin bottom 34. This assembly is disposed in a suitable set of forming dies comprising an upper die 36, a lower die 38 and an extrusion plunger 40 movable within the lower die. The lower die has an opening 42 whose diameter is substantially equal to that of the blank 30 and the upper die has an opening 44 which is substantially equal to the diameter of the head 20 of the mandrel.
The extrusion plunger 40 is provided with a central opening 46 having an enlarged portion 48 at its end, and the lower end of the opening 44 of the upper die has an enlarged lower portion 50, which co-operates with it. the enlarged portion 48 of the central plunger opening to shape the rivet in a manner which will appear later.
Mandrel 18 and blank 30 are mounted in the dies as shown in Fig. 5, with the blank in the lower die, mandrel 18 in opening 46 of the extrusion plunger, and the head 20 of the mandrel inside
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
inside of the blank. This assembly can be carried out in any convenient order using a suitable automatic device (not shown).
The extrusion plunger 40 is then moved through the lower die 38 towards the upper die, making the initial part of this movement, the mandrel is forced to move at the same speed as the extrusion punch using any suitable means (not shown. When the head 20 of the mandrel enters the opening 44 of the upper die, the thin wall 34 which forms the bottom of the blank is sheared off. The extrusion plunger is sheared off. and with the mandrel continuing to move forward, the mandrel head enters opening 44,
and. the plunger 40 flows the material of the wall 32 of the blank inwardly around the part of the mandrel which is immediately behind the head to match the diameter of the opening 44 in which it is moves. Pressure due to movement. of the extrusion die drives the mandrel forward and also flows the metal into the grooves 24 and causes it to fill the enlarged open end 48 of the extrusion plunger and the enlarged end 50 of the upper die . At the end of this operation, the body of the rivet has a partially formed cheek 52, the diameter of which is equal to that of the original blank.
In order to manufacture the entire rivet, it is not necessary to follow the process of inserting the blank 30 into a cup shape and shearing the wall 34. It is possible to use a blank in the form of a cup. crown, the volume of material of which is equal to that of the wall 32, with or without a stop for positioning the blank relative to the head of the mandrel. When there is no stop, a suitable positioning device can be incorporated into the extrusion tool.
If you want to give the cheek a larger diameter,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the entire rivet can be disposed in a second set of forming dies, as seen in Figure 7, to give the cheek the desired shape and diameter.
Although it is possible to make a rivet assembly of the type described above by forming the rivet body independently by a separate operation and then mounting it on the mandrel, with an appropriate necking 4 of the body. thereon, the method described above has been shown to be advantageous in that it provides a tight fit of the rivet body around the mandrel, which is essential for the proper mounting of the rivet, as described above. will see later.
The rivet can be used in the usual manner to secure together two superimposed structures 53 and 54 having aligned openings. Rivet mounting is accomplished by pulling the mandrel through the rivet body so that the corners 22 of the mandrel head split the body into segments 56.
As the mandrel head approaches the panel, the segments curl outwardly against the adjoining edge of the panel and cam cam pull the two parts of the book tightly together.
@
Mounting the rivet, as described above, requires applying a considerable tensile force to the rivet mandrel, which force must of course be opposed by an equal force applied to the rivet body. In the embodiment shown for the rivet, the cheek 16 is spaced forward of the rear end of the rivet and forms a collar 58. This tool having a nose 60 which is intended for mounting the rivet can be used. - born to be worn only against the end of the collar when the chuck is pulled.
The force which is applied to it during the assembly of the rivet deforms the collar by compressing it towards the cheek, which forces the material of the collar in close contact with the mandrel inwards, so as to precisely maintain the collar.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
mandrel in the rivet after completing the assembly operation.
As indicated above, it is possible to make a rivet assembly of the type described by first forming a rivet body and then mounting the mandrel in its body. However, it has been found that rivets formed in this way tend to split irregularly unless the fit of the mandrel to the rivet body is extremely precise. In some of these cases, only one slit forms on the body of the rivet when the rivet is mounted so that insufficient tensile force is applied to the work.
Therefore, one of the advantages of the manufacturing process described here is that by forming the body of the rivet directly around the mandrel, a perfect fit is obtained between the internal surface of the rivet and the external surface. of the mandrel, and that the wedges 22 protrude a short distance into the end of the rivet body. This ensures that the body of the rivet is split into four uniform segments,
Although in the embodiment shown four wedges have been placed on the head of the mandrel, it goes without saying that a greater or lesser number of wedges can be used at will to split the body of the rivet according to any number. wanted segments.
