,e 'J' IS ±lU 1,'Il FABRICATION DE CELUI-CI,"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
sent un peu plus olairement sur la fig. 1; elles sont re- pérées en 10 et 11. La. matière de base a été en réalité étirée dans le sens de la flèche A;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

, e 'J' IS ± lU 1, 'He MANUFACTURE OF THIS, "
The present invention relates to a fabric composed more especially to a novel fabric in relief with improved decorative appearance and to the manufacture thereof.
Many methods have heretofore been suggested for the manufacture of filled fabrics comprising both regular and irregular patterns. These processes
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
recommended the use of an elastic material or fabric interposed between two outer layers., this @ outer layers being fixed by stitching or following a gluing process, in order to produce, on at least one side of the finished fabric , a design or decorative patterns in relief.
In this process, the elastic material tends to overlap the outer layers and as a result of the surfaces delimited by the punctures which surround them, a series of small "swollen" areas is formed which are directly supported by the elastic material.
The fabric according to the invention exhibits an unusual decorative appearance due to a new and improved method of securing the outer layers of material, which automatically achieves a unique and attractive decorative appearance. To this end, an object of the invention is to provide a material of new and improved appearance which is characterized by its relatively low production cost, by its decorative qualities, by its ease of manufacture and maintenance. .
Another object of the invention lies in the application of a new and improved method for the manufacture of decorative materials.
Another object of the invention lies in the use of a new and improved machine for the manufacture of decorative materials.
The aforementioned and other objects of the invention, as well as its advantages, will be demonstrated in the course of the following description, with the aid of the appended drawings, which represent only a part of its applications.

Figs. 8 and 9 show cross sections along lines 8-8 and 9-9 of FIG. 6.

The material according to the invention constitutes, in one of its embodiments, a two-ply fabric ,! comprising a layer of elastic or flexible material, which can be easily stretched and which can be reoontraoter after cessation of the effort, and a covering layer of fabric, such as, for example, a woven fabric of natural material or synthetic.
For the manufacture of this improved material, the method prefers the use of an adhesive which is first applied to the elastic support material, following a determined pattern; the elastic material is then stretched and, while this material is stretched or elongated, the cover fabric is placed in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
contact with the material serving as a support and is kept pressed on the support for a time sufficient to ensure the adhesion of the two layers. When the applied adhesive is completely dry, the tension on the backing material is released causing the woven covering or other fabric to lift within the limits determined by the adhesive.
When the material is stretched in one direction and when the adhesive is applied to the elastic backing along diagonals forming diamond-shaped surfaces, the covering material will tend to lift in lines transverse to the direction. stretching, and this inside each diamond.
For the purpose of explaining the application, it is the embodiment using a diamond pattern, which will be described in more detail, although it is obvious that the method and the machine according to the invention can be used for making relief fabrics following other designs, both regular and irregular. It is, for example, possible to apply the adhesive so as to form rosettes or other decorative patterns, and then to extend the backing material in one or two directions before applying the covering fabric.
We refer to the figures and more especially to figs. 1 and 2, which are photographic reproductions of fabrics made according to the invention.
The fabric shown in FIG. 1 shows the effect obtained by using a printed fabric placed on the base material, while Fig. 2 shows the effect obtained by means of a colourfast fabric. In either case, the lines along which the fabric is attached to the backing material can be seen, however these lines do appear.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
feels a little more olarally in fig. 1; they are marked at 10 and 11. The base material has actually been stretched in the direction of arrow A;
after contraction, the excess material is lifted in each square or each diamond, mainly in the center as indicated at 12, the main elevation generally being along the vertical diagonals of each diamond, as shown in the drawing. It will also be observed that the vertical threads of the etcffe take on a curved shape inside each rhombus; they curve inwards from the right and from the left towards the central vertical diagonal. If we follow the path of an insulated wire in the fabric, we generally see that it follows a path which winds through successive squares or diamonds.
All materials generally follow the path shown in fig. 1, but some materials nevertheless give a somewhat more irregular pattern, as shown in FIG.
2, although the main elevation is still inside each rectangle or square, around the center or the vertical diagonal, as shown in the drawing; in some cases, however, the elevation may be shifted to either side of this vertical diagonal.
The manufacture of the material is carried out by means of an apparatus shown schematically in FIGS.
3 and 4. In Fig. 3, the base material is generally marked at 13. This base material may consist of any elastic plastic, such as polyurethane foam, stretchable nylon and the like, provided that this material has sufficient elasticity to return to its original shape when the stretching force ceases.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In the embodiment according to the invention shown and described, the base material 13 passes through a roller 14 and between two twin roller 15 and 16. The roller 16 is a printing roller for the application of the a- appropriate adhesive on the face side of the base material

A lamella 21 is adjusted so as to ensure the distribution of a uniform layer of adhesive on the roll 19. This adhesive is transmitted to a second adhesive delivery roll 22, which in turn applies the adhesive to the surface of the roll 16.
The rollers 14, 16, 19 and 22 are all actuated at the same peripheral speed so that when the adhesive is applied to the base material 13, by means of the distributor roll 16, said base material is n ' has not yet undergone any deformation or stretching. The base material 13 then passes over the light roller 23, the peripheral speed of which is slightly higher than that of the printing roller 16 so that the base material can be subjected to a predetermined tension. It has been found that if the material is stretched by 5 to 10%, very beautiful results are obtained from the decorative point of view.
The base material 13 being stretched between the roll 16 and the roll 23, this stretching is fully achieved when the material actually passes over the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
roll 23. At this point, the covering fabric 24 is guided towards the roll 23 by means of the rollers 25 and 26, the latter being adjusted to provide pressure contact between the base material 13 and the fabric. coating 24, so as to obtain a solid assembly between the two layers of material.
When using reactive adhesives. In order to obtain a faster setting, it is desirable to heat the roll 23 in a suitable manner, for example by injecting steam into the axis of the roll, then using a roll having the shape of an oreux drum. It is also possible to use radiant heaters distributed over the surface of the drum, as shown at 27; In some cases, a radiant apparatus 28 may be placed immediately after the roll 26 so as to transmit heat to the composite material being made as it leaves the roll 26.
When using an apparatus such as the reheater 28, it is obviously important to produce only the heat necessary to promote the application of the adhesive without harming either the base material 13 or the covering fabric 24. . The combined material is then guided by a series of rollers 29 to 32,. all operated at a peripheral speed equal to that of roller 23, so that the material is kept stretched as it passes through rollers 29-32. These rolls are preferably heated to ensure the perfect setting of the adhesive before the tractive force on the material ceases.
When the material passes over the last roller 32, the tensile force is gradually released and the fabric takes the form shown in FIG. 1 and fig. 2, after which the finished fabric 33 is wound up on a roll
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
or suitable chuck 34.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the fabric according to the invention, the base material 13 being stretched, while the cover fabric 24 is glued to the base material along diagonals of adhesive 10 and 11. It will be seen that the surfaces delimited by adhesion strips
10 and 11 are in the form of elongated diamonds, while at the time when the adhesive is applied to the base material 13 the surfaces delimited by the strips of adhesive are in the form of squares arranged diagonally, as can be expected. see it for example in fig. 1. When the adhesive is applied and the tension ceases on the fabric, the line is obtained as shown in fig. 6. Note that the material elevations are generally made along the diagonals of rectangles or parallelograms as appropriate.
By way of comparison, between FIGS. 5 and 6, it will be noted that the vertical space between the intersections, as indicated by the arrow B in FIG. 5, is exactly equal to the space between the intersections on the finished fabric, as indicated by arrow B 'in fig. 6. On the: fig 5, the arrow C indicates the horizontal distance between the intersections and, in fig. 6, the arrow C 'indicates a substantial reduction in the distance between the corresponding intersections.
During the manufacturing process, when the base material is stretched, the covering fabric 24 is laid flat on the base material, as shown in FIG. 7 The finished fabric, shown in fig 6, is shown in cross section in figs 8 and 9, and some curvature of the base material is made at points 35, note that this curvature has been somewhat exaggerated in view to better illustrate the general appearance of the fabric, known after completion. Points 35 actually represent
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
bulges which terminate at the intersections of the adhesive strips 10 and 11 and the bulges are also visible in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Fig. 1 only shows a slight bulge at the intersections while FIG. 2 shows a somewhat more accentuated curvature at these intersections ,,
Fig. 9 shows a slight reverse curvature at points 36 which curvature occurs in the base material immediately below the raised portions of the upholstery fabric.
A bottom plan view of the tissue according to insertion is shown in fig. 10, the figure being @ to show the general shape of the curvature of the top, as described above in support of Figures 8 and 9.
While the invention; as described above mainly concerned the use of a material with two thicknesses, it is obviously possible to use material with several thicknesses so as to obtain two finished faces, both being in relief. In addition, the principle used in the manufacture of fabrics shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 can be applied to obtain other designs which depend on the pattern in which the adhesive is applied to the base material.
Well. that only certain embodiments of the present invention have been described and illustrated, it is obvious that variations and modifications can be made without thereby departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
