<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE KNIVES USED FOR CUTTING
WALL CLADDING JOINTS.
The present invention relates to the knives used for cutting the overlapping parts in the joints of wall coverings and it aims to avoid in a certain way, damage to the plastering and also to simplify the cutting operations.
These operations indeed require the intervention of a special slat using a knife whose blade can be fitted with a half-moon limiting the depth of cut to twice the thickness of the coating plus the thickness of the latte.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Practice has shown that, with these devices, the second thickness was not cut and that, to cut this second thickness, the cutting edge had to penetrate into the wall, which damages the latter as well as the cutting edge of the knife,
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and consists in that the blade ends in a point of which one of the sides is provided with a cutting edge while on the auure face is provided a protective plate forming with the longitudinal axis of the knife an angle of less than 90, usually about 45, and in that a cutting edge is also provided along the inner straight edge, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the handle.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown by way of non-limiting example, several embodiments of a knife made in accordance with the invention.
Figures 1 to 3 and 3A relate to a first embodiment.
Figures 1 and 2 are partial sectional views of the knife.
Figures 3 and 3A are detail views.
Figures 4, 4A, 4B, 5, 6A and 6B relate to a second embodiment and Figures 7, 7A, 7B, 8, 9A and 9B to a third embodiment.
Figures 10, 11 and 12 are explanatory views (knife at work).
In Figures 1, 2, 3 and 3A of the accompanying drawings, there is shown at 1, the handle of the knife formed of two superimposed parts 11-12, interconnected by screws 2.
One of the parts includes, at the end of the handle,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a housing / for the blade 4 which is clamped between these parts; the housing is delimited by lateral tabs 5-6 with rectilinear interior edges.
One of these tongues (the tongue 6) comprises a lug 7 of semi-circular shape engaging in a recess 8 of corresponding shape, provided on an edge of the knife 4.
In accordance with the invention, the blade 4 carries along its upper oblique edge 9 and attached thereto, an extension 10 which is narrower than the blade 15 and which ends in a point 11, one of the ends of which is sides 12 is provided with a cutting edge while on the other face 13 is fixed, for example welded, a protective plate 14, for example of steel, forming with the longitudinal axis of the knife, an angle of approximately 45, and in any case less than 90.
A cutting edge 15 is also provided along the inner rectilinear edge 16, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the handle.
The blade of the knife is located in the longitudinal direction, in the middle of the protective face, making with it an angle of 90 (figure 3A).
When in use, the knife is handled in such a way that the protective plate 14 is inserted at the point where two covering elements 17-18 are superimposed between the wall 19 (figures 10-11) or the facade. to be covered and the covering element applied against the wall and the knife is moved up and down, the plate 14 remaining in contact with the wall (figures 10-11) and the cutting being done with the cutting edge 15.
When the worker has reached the lower part of the wall, cutting can be continued using cutting edge 12 after rotating the entire knife and blade.

from 1800 (figure 12).
In Figures 4, 4A and 4B, the blade 41 also ends in a point 111, one of the sides of which is provided with the cutting edge 12 1 and the face of the blade parallel to the longitudinal axis of the knife, also has a sharp 151.
The protective pad 141 is not a separate element but is formed by folding the blade back along line P (Figure 5).
According to a variant, use may be made of two blades 42-43, superimposed, each provided with a fold forming protection plates 142-143 (FIGS. 6A and 6B).
FIGS. 7, 7A and 7B relate to another variant comparable to that according to FIGS. 4, 4A and 4B, but in which the protective plate has a square or rectangular shape and is also obtained by folding back according to the line Pl (figure 8).
Figures 9A and 9B correspond to Figures 6A and 6B.
