<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Description submitted to obtain an u i t v i n d i n g s o c t r o o i in the name of

The invention relates to a metal cord intended to bathe rubber or plastic articles, such as vehicle tires, transport and transmission belts, high pressure rubber hoses, ......
A known cable construction is the one shown in Figure 1: the cable consists of a core of three wires and around it five equal outer strands each of seven equal wires, it follows from the nature of the construction that the core strand has a diameter of approximately the 7/10 of the diameter of the outer strand. This construction is frequently used in reinforcement applications for rubber tires, the fatigue rating is high, but in various applications (including in the breaker of a rubber tire) such a high fatigue rating is completely unnecessary, more still, often a certain stiffness is desired which cannot be provided with such a construction.
The disadvantage of this cable is, moreover, its high price, mainly due to the small diameter of each individual filament,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and through the various cabling stages that must be passed in manufacturing the cable. Bundling wires into strands also offers the disadvantage of an additional tensile strength loss in the cable.
The invention comprises a cable which, although derived from this classic (1 x 3) + (5 x 7) construction, does not exhibit the above drawbacks. The outer strands are replaced by a single wire of the same diameter as the diameter of an outer strand, depending on whether one wishes to keep the number of fatigues larger or smaller between certain limits, or whether the stiffness decreases or increases also between certain limits, the core strand is replaced by multiple threads or just a single thread.
Examples of such constructions are t - for heavier cables t
0.32 + 5 x 0.42 mm (1 x 3) 0.15+ 5 x 0.42 mm - for finer cables:
0.24 + 5 x 0.32 mm (1 x 3) 0.11 + 5 x 0.32 mm On fig. 2 and fig. 3 are given two sketches of cables constructed according to this principle. With regard to the classic cable, the following can be deduced: 1. For the same cable diameter, the cable construction according to this invention has a larger amount of steel: this increases the weight of the cable, but the tensile force increases proportionally.
Moreover, due to the absence of entangled wires in the outer mat, the joint cabling loss decreases, so that the tensile force undergoes an additional increase. 2. The cable according to this invention has a significantly better penetration capacity of the rubber or plastic surrounding it.
3. The price of the cable has decreased significantly - the average diameter of the mono-filament has increased from 1/8 of the cable diameter to a value between 1/2 and 1/3 of. the cable diameter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
no more individual mono-filaments can be bundled together into strands in the outer sheath of the cables 4.the overall result is therefore a significant improvement of the Economic Coefficient (an important factor in the quality indication of a cable, equal to price per m and per kg of tensile force).
Comparative values are shown in a series of cables with diameter 1.16 mm.
