<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
L'invention sera décrite ci-après avec référence aux dessins annexés dans lesquels : la Fig. 1 est une coupe longitudinale de la charnière suivant l'invention représentée en position ouverte; la Fig. 2 est une vue du dessus, partie en coupe; la Fig. 3 est une vue semblable à la Fig. 1 et montre la charnière en position fermée; ' la Fig. 4 est une coupe suivant la ligne IV-IV de la Fig. 1; les Figs. 5 et 6 sont des coupes axiales d'une autre forme d'exécution de la charnière, respectivement en positions , ouverte et fermée; la Fig. 7 est une vue du dessus suivant la Fig. 5, partie en coupe; la Fig. 8 est une coupe longitudinale d'une variante de la charnière ; la Fig. 9 est une vue du dessus, partie en coupe; la Fig. 10 qui est semblable à la Fig. 8 montre la char- nière en position fermée ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Toggle hinge, in particular for furniture.
The present invention relates to a toggle hinge, in particular a hinge the elements of which are combined with a spring member so as to form a toggle, in which the action of the spring member maintains the elements of, the hinge in two limit positions.
Known toggle hinges satisfy their intended purpose (ie, the door or the like is retained in the open and closed positions), but they have drawbacks which limit their application. For example, in their extreme positions, the doors cannot perform limited movements. In general, it is desirable that the door should be able to swing freely in a certain
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tain measure when open, regardless of the elastic action exerted by the spring on the hinge.
In addition, known hinges cannot be fitted to the edges or near the edges of a door because a certain distance is required between the door and the support thereof to allow the door to pivot.
The hinge according to the invention satisfactorily avoids the aforementioned drawback and! ease,.' on the other hand, the articulation of the doors to the cabinet or to one another; in the case of adjacent doors, these doors can be opened simultaneously to occupy the desired positions with respect to their supports.
This hinge is characterized in that its two elements are articulated to one another by means of two articulation members whose axes are parallel, the conventional spring member of the hinge being connected to one of the elements and to at least one of the articulation members.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the hinge according to the invention, one of the articulation members is forked and comprises, in substance between its ends, a cross member which is in contact with one of the ends of the spring member. the hinge.
According to the invention, the forked articulation member provides a stop co-operating with one of the elements of the hinge to limit the action of the spring member. When the hinge is in the open position, so that 1 ' spring member hardly acts on the elements} of the hinge.
According to a variant, the hinge is designed such that its mounting position can be adjusted to bring the axis of the hinge into the correct position. One of the elements of the hinge has the form of a body comprising two boxes opposed to each other and whose bottoms are juxtaposed and pierced with openings in which a bracket which supports the articulation members of the. hinge is mounted in a dovetail position, the arms of this bracket being provided with perforated tabs traversed by screws which fix
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the support bracket at the bottom of the boxes.
The invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of the hinge according to the invention shown in the open position; Fig. 2 is a top view, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1 and shows the hinge in closed position; 'FIG. 4 is a section taken along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1; Figs. 5 and 6 are axial sections of another embodiment of the hinge, respectively in positions, open and closed; Fig. 7 is a top view according to FIG. 5, sectional part; Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of a variant of the hinge; Fig. 9 is a top view, partly in section; Fig. 10 which is similar to FIG. 8 shows the hinge in the closed position;
Fig. 11 is a section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 8.
In Figs. 1 to 5, A and B denote the two elements of the hinge which are connected to one another in the manner described below and which are fixed in a known manner to the two members to be connected.
The box-shaped element A contains a spring member C also comprising in known manner a coil spring 10 held in compression in a telescopic cartridge 12, one suitably shaped end of which engages a lug 14 formed in the element. AT.
The other, suitably shaped end of the cartridge 12 is in contact with a cross member 16 formed at a suitable location by a forked elbow lever 18, which at one of its ends,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
comprises a hollow head 20 in which a pivot is engaged, the ends of the pivot being fixed in holes drilled in the walls 24 of the housing A.
As shown in Fig. 1, the cross member 16 is arranged so as to be at the upper edge of the housing A when the hinge is open and, in this position, the spring 10 is extended to the maximum.
The branches of the forked angled lever 18 end; by eyelets 26 which receive pivots 28, the ends of which are fixed in holes drilled in ears 30 'of the element B.
One of the ends of the element B is also forked and is articulated to the forked elbow lever 18.
The housing A carries at its upper part a pivot 32, the axis of which is parallel to the axes of the pivots 22 and 28 and which is located just below the level of the lug 14 on which the telescopic cartridge 12, containing the spring 10, pivots.
The socket head 34 of a link 36 is mounted on the pivot 32.et the other end 38 of the link is connected by. a pivot 40 to a longitudinal fixing blade 42 forming part of the element B of the hinge.
The elbow lever 18 and the link 36, when the hinge is open (Fig. 1), are substantially perpendicular to each other while when the hinge is closed (Fig. 3) they are in position. parallel substance.
The described hinge operates as follows: when in its open position shown in FIG. 1, the branches of the forked lever 18 are in contact with the edge of the wall 24 of the element A and are pressed in this position by the spring 10 which, as described above, is extended to the maximum In this position, the two Elements A and B of the hinge are slightly biased by the spring 10 for the reasons described as well as because the contact of the arms of the angled lever 18 with the edge of the wall 2 of the element A resists the action of the spring.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In this position, in which the spring 10 exerts no force on the hinge, the latter can be slightly moved away from this position according to the appropriate ease existing between the pviots which connect the different parts of the device to the elements of the hinge. .
But, when the hinge is in the closed position shown in FIG. 3, the spring 10 is compressed because the cross member 16 has rotated about 90 around the axis of the pivot 22.
The spring 10 acts counterclockwise on the element B (Fig. 3), through the link 18. This being so .. the door held by the hinge is pressed against the edge of the door. opening of the cabinet, which it thus closes completely and effectively. The hinge thus constructed makes it possible to simultaneously open two adjacent doors mounted on the same support because one of the elements of the hinge can be fixed to the support of the door at a location offset towards the rear without hampering the operation of the door.
The hinge being in the open position, if it is desired that 1, element B has remarkable ease with respect to element A, it suffices to provide, at least at one of the joints of the rod 36 or also at the joint comprising the pivot 28 of the angled lever 18, apertures of suitable length to establish, between these parts, a suitable play which is used freely to move somewhat, within determined limits, the elements A and B with respect to the other when the hinge is open.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 5 to 7, the spring member C comprises a helical spring 10a slidably mounted on a pin 46 provided at its left end with a bracket 48 whose arms are drilled at their ends to see a pivot 16a fixed to the elbow of the lever elbow 18a, to thus form the characteristic toggle of the hinge of the invention.
One end of the spring 10a is held by the yoke 48 and the other by the wall 24a of the element A. This wall is per-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cée an opening 50 in which the pin 40 slides during the movements of the hinge.
As shown in Figs. 5 to 7, the element A is forked and is made of sheet metal; its ends 52 are shaped so as to allow the bent lever 18a and the rod 36a to articulate on the pivots 22a and '32a.
The other element B of the hinge comprises a blade 54 whose longitudinal edges 30a are folded down so as to form a saddle to which the ends of the bent lever 18a and of the rod 36a are articulated by "pivots 28a and 40a, the blade 44 ending in a plate with holes 42a serving to fix the hinge.
The caliper 48 is dimensioned so that the saddle 54 as well as the elbow lever 18a and the link 36a can pass freely between its arms, as shown in FIG. 2. In the two limit positions of the hinge (which are represented in 'Figs. 5 and 6) the spring 10a always exerts on the two elements.
A and B actions that keep these elements in their limit positions.
In the variant shown in Figs. 8 to 11 of the drawings. The element A of the hinge is in the form of a body which comprises two cylindrical housings 60 and 62 superimposed with their bottoms in mutual contact in a manner which will be described below.
The bottoms of the cases 60 and 62 have diametrical openings 64 which are in line and coincide with one another; open it. ture of the upper casing 62 has longitudinal flanges 63 folded at right angles which fit into the opening of the underlying casing 60. In addition, the casing 62 comprises, at its free edge .. perforated ears 66 in which. pass clamping devices such as screws that secure the hinge to the door or frame.
Element A contains a stirrup-shaped support 68 whose arms 70 (see Fig. 11) are inserted into the opening formed by the flanges 65 mentioned above. The length of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the caliper is less than that of the openings 64 so as to allow it to slide, in the openings. In addition, the caliper
68 comprises, at the ends of its arms 70, two folded ears 72: at right angles and pierced with buttonholes 74 in which screws 76 screwed into tapped holes in the bottom of the casing
60. can slide.
However, the screws 76 tighten the two housings 60 and 62 and the bracket 68 so as to assemble them in one piece; the stirrup 68, thanks to its buttonholes 74, can be displaced axially with respect to the element A to modify its position with respect to the element B of the hinge.
Holes are provided between the ends of the caliper
68 to receive pivots 22b and 32b on which are mounted the rods 18b and 36b, the other ends of which are articulated by other pivots 28b and 40b at the sides 42b of the hollow boss 78 provided in the longitudinal middle of the element B of the hinge, this boss containing the spring device C of the hinge as well as part of the articulation members 28b and 36b arranged so as to form an elastic toggle which holds the hinge firmly in one or the other of the hinge. its two limit positions.
In this variant, the spring device C comprises one or more helical springs 10b mounted on a spindle 46b sliding in an opening 50b formed in the end wall of the boss 78. This wall also retains one of the ends of the spring, of which l the other end is retained by a head 80 which is integral with the other end of pin 46b. The head 80 is provided with a notch 82 in which is engaged a tapered knife-shaped finger 84, integrally with the end eyelet 38b of the rod or articulation member 36b.
The finger 84 can occupy with respect to the axis of the pivot 40b two stable positions .represented in FIGS. 8 and 10 where, the axis of the spindle 46b is shown in two positions located respectively on either side of the pivot 40b. With this arrangement, one obtains a toggle in which the spring 10b can have substantial dimensions, in particular in length, then
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
que.dans known hinges, the spring of the toggle has, for reasons of size, very small dimensions ides compared to the force it must exert.
When the hinge is in the position shown in FIG. 8, the spring 10b acts on the rod 36b so as to make it oscillate in the direction des.ailles of a watch, thus exerting on the element B of the hinge an action aimed at keeping the door open. On the other hand, when the element B is angularly displaced with respect to the element A in the direction of the arrow X to the position shown in FIG. 10, the door is closed and is pressed against the corresponding frame by the inaction of the spring 10b.
The hinge described and shown can be installed simply and quickly because it suffices to drill in the door (or in the frame), a blind hole forming a housing of diameter equal to the diameter of the two juxtaposed boxes 60 and 62 and of a depth substantially equal to the height of the shoemakers. The correct location of this housing is of little importance since it is possible to adjust the mass grave. Introduce the two boxes 60 and 62 in the housing and they are fixed to the door by means of screws engaged in the holes of the ears 66.
The element B of the hinge is then fixed to the frame (or to the door) in a known manner, then the bracket 68 is introduced with its arms 70 into the opening delimited by them. flanges 65 and it is fixed to the boxes 60 and 62 by screws 76 which also connect the two boxes to one another. Before screwing the screws 76 fully, the position of the door relative to the frame is adjusted, and any misalignment is eliminated by moving the door relative to the frame, which has the effect of moving the bracket 68; in the openings 64. The screws 76 are then tightened fully and the hinge is ready to operate.
The construction of the hinge according to this embodiment is simple and advantageous in particular as regards the construction of its various elements which can be made of sheared and stamped sheet metal. In addition, the hinge, owing to its limited dimensions, can be applied to any

what type of metal-furniture '
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described, to which changes and modifications can be made without departing from its scope. For example, the spring 10 can act on 1 link 36. And not on the crank lever 18.
